Grateful Dead Bring Philly 1989 Show To Big Screen
GRATEFUL DEAD BRING PHILADELPHIA SHOW FROM 1989 TO THE BIG SCREEN
Screenings Of Upcoming Crimson, White & Indigo Set Scheduled To Begin April 13
3-CD/1-DVD Set Of The Dead’s Previously Unreleased July 7, 1989 Philadelphia Concert
At JFK Stadium Available April 20 From Grateful Dead/Rhino
Jerry Garcia by Blakesberg |
The Grateful Dead were enjoying a late-career renaissance in 1989 when the band steamed into Philadelphia on one of the hottest days of the summer to play the last concert ever at John F. Kennedy Stadium. The July 7 show in the City of Brotherly Love highlights the band’s exuberant resurgence, a peak that rivals any that came before it.
Prior to the upcoming release of this show as a 3-CD/1-DVD set, several screenings of the live performance are set to take place at theaters across the country, beginning with a screening at the Ambler Theater in Philadelphia on April 13. See below for full screening schedule.
Rhino salutes life, liberty, and the pursuit of “hippieness” with a collection that includes every note from this epic show on three CDs and one DVD. The DVD captures the entire concert, shot from an amazing multi-camera perspective by the same crew that shot the legendary Truckin’ Up To Buffalo DVD. CRIMSON, WHITE & INDIGO: PHILADELPHIA, JULY 7, 1989, will be available April 20 from Grateful Dead/Rhino at all retail outlets, including Dead.net, for a suggested list price of $39.98. A digital version featuring all of the audio content will also be available.
The 19 tracks on 3 CDs – all but one previously unreleased-were mixed from the 24-track analog master tapes, enhanced using the latest audio engineering technology and presented here in HDCD. The set comes packaged with a booklet of rare photos and an essay by Steve Silberman, who co-produced the Grateful Dead’s boxed set of previously unreleased recordings, So Many Roads (1965-1995).
The Philadelphia concert offers a snapshot of the Dead’s 1989 tour, where the band played to some of its biggest audiences ever, a result of the group’s only Top 40 hit, “Touch Of Grey” from 1987′s In The Dark. During this tour, the band was recording the follow-up to that album, Built To Last, which is an important reason why the jamming heard here is particularly fluid and concise. In fact, the band played a pair of songs from the upcoming album, the aching ballad “Standing On The Moon” and the poignant
“Blow Away,” a song co-written by keyboardist Brent Mydland, who sadly died a year later.
The band helped raze the aging stadium, thundering through “Hell In A Bucket,” “Little Red Rooster,” and Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again.” Many sitting at the north end of the open-air stadium recall the concrete bleachers trembling during Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann‘s drum duet in the second set. The show closed with another Dylan cover, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” the last song ever performed at JFK.
When this show was recorded, the band included guitarist Jerry Garcia, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Brent Mydland, and guitarist Bob Weir.

ECB to hold rates, Greece dominates agenda
The European Central Bank is set to announce that it is leaving interest rates on hold as Greece’s financial crisis tops the agenda for the ECB meeting. Analysts expect the bank to say that it has left interest rates unchanged at one per cent amid signs that renewed concerns about Athens’ battle to slash its deficit and debt levels are undercutting the euro as well as hitting Greek bonds.
Greece hints at “Northern Macedonia”
Greece could accept the name “Northern Macedonia” for its northern neighbor, and thus solve a dispute ongoing for the past 19 years. “The name, ‘Northern Macedonia’, lies within the framework suggested by Athens,” Alternate Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas was quoted as saying by local media.
Broken Bells: First Tour Ever
BROKEN BELLS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER TOUR
James Mercer and Danger Mouse Hit The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego
Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart
Broken Bells |
In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes), James Mercer and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells‘ first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities.
In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band, Broken Bells has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception: Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff” and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”
The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin.
Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.
Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.
Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

She & Him at Rachel Ray’s Party :: 03.20.10 by Dudelson |
We celebrated the first day of spring with some of the coldest weather Austin has experienced this year. With a bitter wind and temps dipping down into the 30s, the cold definitely affected the music experience on the final day of South by Southwest. Prior to the really chilly evening, I spent my day at the 40 Watt/JamBase Party located at the Side Bar. With one indoor stage and two outdoor ones, it allowed for a nice flow in-and-out of the elements that kept patrons warm(er). Each stage took the name of a departed Athens artist with the Vic Chesnutt Stage serving the headliners, the Jerry Fuchs Stage being the secondary outdoor venue and the Jon Guthrie Stage set up inside the bar.
Kayceman’s Top 3
#3 – Camper Van Beethoven
Psychedelic folk rock, alternative ska pop, alt-country and whatever else people call Camper Van Beethoven, the band was able to warm the huddled masses at the 40 Watt/JamBase Party with “Take The Skinheads Bowling.” Mixing a polka shuffle with a neat little violin line (that could have been louder in the mix), they twisted deeply into weird Americana/country rock landscapes and it wasn’t hard to pick up on the Leftover Salmon cross-breeding found through bandleader David Lowery‘s work with Salmon in Cracker. What’s even cooler, the band funded their trip to Austin by letting fans donate $100 in exchange for selecting a song to be performed at the fest.
#2 – The Tenant
Street Sweeper Social ClubRachel Ray’s Party :: 03.20.10 by Dudelson |
Named after Roman Polanski’s movie The Tenant, the quartet played inside the 40 Watt/JamBase Party to a filled bar. Working a moody, dark, dream-pop motif with warm textures, they won me over quickly, even though I’d never heard of them before. One can hear the influence of Manchester bands like New Order, Joy Division and Stone Roses, but it still came off as original. Heavy on electronics but juiced with real guitars and drums, it was easy to dance with. Another band that fans of Phoenix or M-83 should really check out.
#1 – Dead Confederate
There were a lot of big, distorted guitar squalls at the 40 Watt/JamBase Party, but none knocked the crust from our tired, cold bones more than Dead Confederate. Built upon slow, patient grooves that erupted into slamming cymbals and walls of noise, it was remarkable that they could paint such a picture in the light of day. This is dark music, both in content and delivery, and it’s best experienced in a loud room with weird lights, where you can hide in the shadows. But none of that mattered during “The Rat.” Looking around the converted parking lot, heads were slamming back and forth and fists were pumping. A serious achievement considering how freaking cold it was.
Bonus Coverage by JamBase CEO David Rosenheim – Big Star Tribute
The remaining members of Big Star joined special guests to perform an emotionally charged tribute to frontman Alex Chilton, who died suddenly on March 17. Big Star was scheduled to play a fest-closing set at Antone’s, and instead of canceling the gig they brought in friends to help celebrate Chilton and his music. The capacity crowd was treated to 100 minutes of Big Star classics from the band’s influential 70s albums #1 Record, Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers. Performing with original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens were current Big Star members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of The Posies. Special guests ranged from original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel, Chris Stamey (dB’s), M. Ward, Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Sondre Lerche, Chuck Prophet, Evan Dando (The Lemonheads), John Doe (who sang a lovely version of “I’m In Love With a Girl”), Amy Speace, The Watson Twins and Curt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets.

The Packway Handle Band at 40 Watt/JamBase Party03.20.10 by Hagerman |
Saturday came down upon us, bitterly cold and gray. It was definitely a shock to the system after three days of gorgeous sun and mild nights. The weather seemed to cause many folks to stay indoors on the last day, which meant noticeably sparser attendance at a lot of shows, plus a fair number of cancellations and outdoor stages running late. But as the sign I spied at Green Mesquite BBQ later that day said, “It’s called Texas weather.” Texas weather means extremes that smack you in the face. So, I bundled up and rolled with the punches.
Those in attendance at the 40 Watt Day Party (co-sponsored by JamBase) seemed to have the right idea – grab a Bloody Mary at Side Bar and huddle in the warmth of conversation. As the crowd swapped stories about the previous nights’ revelries, Athens, Georgia five-piece string outfit Packway Handle Band stepped up to their dual head mic stand, set up on the Jon Guthrie Stage inside the bar. Without so much as an introduction, they launched into a set that made a believer out of everyone by the end. Packway have a fierce stage presence, with more than a touch of dramatic brimstone. Fiddle player Andrew Heaton was especially infused with hellfire, frequently leaping from the mic huddle to run around at the front of the crowd while thrusting his bow into the air like a baton. They were just a joy to watch. I adore the single mic stand set-up for bluegrass bands – it adds an element of theater, and Packway had it down to a snappy science. The four – Heaton, Michael Paynter (mandolin), Josh Erwin (guitar), and Tom Baker (banjo) would smoothly weave in and out (bassist Zach McCoy stood coolly to the side, until the end that is), leaning in close and singing, stepping out for the solo passes and even acting out the lyrics. When they sang, “Times a-comin’ when the sinner must die,” Paynter fell to his knees and Heaton mimed shooting him in the head. With his eyes menacingly wide, Heaton drew his finger across his throat, grimacing on the word “die.” From an amped-up version of “Tell It To Me,” which kicks the shit out of OCMS’s version about five times over, and a cover of The Tiger Lillies’ “Terrible,” which featured trumpets and a couple gals on backup vocals, this is a band that knows how to own any song they set their minds to. At the end of the show, they ran into the crowd, furiously picking their instruments. McCoy raised his doghouse bass over his head, sending the bar lights swinging and wildly cheering folks ducking out of their way. They pushed the crowd back and forth, as they ran into the walls of the bar. This is how I like my bluegrass served up – dark and passionate, with a side of blood.
Lumped in with the post-punk disco bands, but drawing equally on robotic electro and banging club pop, WhoMadeWho were ferociously fun at Encore. They laid down rubbery beats and squishy synth, as bassist Tomas Hoffding leapt from the speakers to the crowd and back again and guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg pointed directly at members of the audience, singing, “You! Your thoughts are dirty!” One of the most amusing things to me was that Hoffding and Kjellberg never cracked the glass cool looks on their faces – Kjellberg kept a slightly-sweet, slightly-pervy smile glued on the whole time, and Hoffding was absolutely unflappable, even when Kjellberg bent down and pretended to tickle his balls or reached over and grabbed his nipples. When Hoffding made a trip into the crowd, an audience member tried to get in on the titty twisting action. Unfazed, Hoffding simply ripped open the top of his shirt and let him have it. These are some seriously freaky Danes, and when they closed the set with a crushing cover of “Satisfaction” from Benny Benassi’s 2003 album Hypnotica (you know, “Push me/ And then just touch me/ Until I get my/ Satisfaction”), you felt like they really wanted you to push them in some very unseemly ways.
Pretty Lights at La Zona Rosa :: 03.20.10 by Aaron Bach |
I’m a total Shakespeare nerd, so I had to see a band named after one of The Bard’s more obscure tragedies. I shivered in the cold and darkness of the Red 7 patio, through the end of the utterly unmemorable Crystal Antlers. Titus Andronicus was worth every minute of that wait. You can just tell when a band fervently believes in what they are doing, and lord, does this group write some new gospel. Anthemic punk with definite touches of The Hold Steady, Springsteen and The Pogues, you just want to pump fists to this. Note to self: Get their recorded stuff, so I can scream the lyrics next time. They had bucket loads of energy and are unapologetically brainy. Their latest album, The Monitor, is a loose concept album about the Civil War. They also have an album called The Airing of Grievances, which is a reference to “The Strike” episode of Seinfeld and the holiday Festivus. I’m glad there’s a band of fellow pop culture, literature and history geeks out there to freak out with, who also have the balls to write 15-minute punk songs. I think I’m in love.
Utterly beaten to a pulp, I ended my SXSW 2010 with Pretty Lights at La Zona Rosa. Although not normally my thing, I got to hand it to him – Pretty Lights is definitely on top of his game. There’s a reason he’s blown up as of late. He has a seamless sensibility as he layers and melts bits and pieces together. It’s real craftsmanship, and I was well impressed. He also had a mind-blowing light show, and drummer Cory Eberhard added a real thrust behind the sonic palette. Glitchy, dubby and heavy, with moments of exuberant flight, it was the perfect way to sweat and dance down the last hours of SXSW 2010 before 2 a.m. fell upon us. SXSW can be a harsh mistress, but, as I looked around at the beaming faces and hands raised in the air, I knew she’d already called me back for 2011.

Germans oppose Greek aid
Fierce German resistance to helping crisis-hit Greece has emerged in a Financial Times opinion poll. Reports says that this “strengthens the hand of Angela Merkel, the chancellor, before a possible European showdown this week over financial aid for Athens”.
Greece may look to IMF for bailout
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said Thursday that his country may ask the IMF for a bailout, a move which Germany would support. Analysts, however, think Athens is simply trying to provoke a concrete EU aid plan.
Motion Potion: Electric Nostalgia Tour and Silent Soundclash Series
Motion Potion challenges America’s DJs to a “Silent Soundclash”
Wireless headphones from Silent Events propel a 2-channel Silent Disco battle in U.S. clubs
Motion Potion |
For more than a decade, Motion Potion has been pushing “Electric Nostalgia,” a style that unites the past 40 years of dance music with its present and future. This spring he’ll be recruiting a battalion of DJs to help push the concept at “Silent Soundclashes” across America. With the help of hundreds of Silent Events wireless headphones, MoPo will be joined by DJs in 20 different markets for dance-floor excursions that put the choice in the hands of the listener. The Soundclash concept goes back to the earliest days of DJing in Jamaica and New York, where DJs would face off at free outdoor events in “winner takes the soundsystem” battles. “The “Silent Soundclash Series” updates this concept and allows the listener to choose with the flip of a channel switch.
“The Silent Soundclash Series” is a step towards the potential fulfillment of the long-term promise of the “Silent Disco” concept. What started as a way for festivals like Bonnaroo and Glastonberry to run late-night parties is headed towards a day when an urban house party could rock on without waking the neighbors. Using Silent Events’ patented headphones not only allows the best in wireless sound (on their own unique FCC-approved band) but also the ability to switch channels, allowing two DJs to rock a party head-to-head. The partygoer will no longer have to “choose with his feet” by leaving the dance floor but rather just change the station.
“Rocking the “Silent Disco” at Bonnaroo the past four years has been an incredible musical and social experience.” said MoPo “With this tour we’re bringing that amazing vibe right into people’s hometowns and allowing their favorite local DJs to participate in the experiment and join the fun.”
The “Silent Soundclash Series” will take place in the middle of Motion Potion’s Spring 2010 “Electric Nostalgia” Tour, coinciding with the release of a series of three “Electric Nostalgia EP’s” and the launch of the new online community at www.motionpotion.com. The first “Silent Soundclashes” will take place at WMC Miami and will continue on for more than a month across the Eastern United States. MoPo will then head back towards San Francisco to play a series of shows with electronic legends like Tipper, NAPT and Fort Knox 5.

40 Watts of Freedom: An Athens Legend
By: Jeff Tobias
|
Yes, it’s true. History compresses (if not crushes) every passing moment by virtue of its eternal extrapolation. But that doesn’t mean those moments didn’t exist… or that they weren’t special or that they can’t continue to be. A few blocks away from the bucolic field where the Music Tapes marched the Athens Popfest ’07 audience (kazoos in hand) across the street from the lawn of the massive frat house where legendary krautrock band Faust set off firecrackers (much to the pink-collars’ bemusement), and around the block from the ghost of its former self (more on that later) stands the 40 Watt Club, a living, sustained testament to the punk rock ethos that built Athens, Georgia. The town, which lives and dies by the University of Georgia and the whims of its mechanisms, has spent the last two decades building up its bar scene and worshiping at the altar of its college football heroes. And while that larger landscape has changed, the 40 Watt is the heart that keeps Athens pure.
The club was able to accomplish this goal despite many, many, many changes in location. Its initial foundation was based on necessity – the local weirdos didn’t have a place to dance. It all started in the middle of downtown: College Square.
“The first one was a dusty old attic that Curtis Crowe set up for parties,” says Barrie Buck, the club’s owner since 1989. Crowe, the drummer for amazingly-influential/still-criminally-underexposed band Pylon, threw a few shows there in the late 70s. Like most do-it-yourself, autonomous zones, it had “charm” to spare. “There’s where it got the name – the single light bulb swinging from the ceiling,” says Barrie. “There was a Halloween party in ’79 and then they decided to make it, as Curtis put it, ‘quasi-legal’ and moved across the street.” The 40 Watt, mark II, is now part of a Starbucks.

Two more moves took the 40 Watt to a narrow storage space on Clayton Street. “We got in there for next to nothing,” says Barrie. “The Guthrie Brothers [of local '60s traditionalists the Michael Guthrie Band] lent us a PA, [and we] just built it on virtually no money at all. Back then things were a little more lenient as far as requirements, building inspection and that kinda stuff. It was super-punk rock. It was great.”
Soon enough, the venue began to outgrow its physical limits. “It was 1989 and back then, it was crazy,” says Barrie. “People didn’t go to bars, people went to shows. Now it’s kinda the opposite. We would have bands come through and play two nights and still that wouldn’t be enough. At that point I realized it wasn’t a hobby, it was something I wanted to do for real. We would have The Melvins two nights, The Jesus Lizard two nights, Fugazi two nights, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ two nights.”
Bands loved the club for its low-key friendliness, but necessity once again proved to be a motivator – the 40 Watt needed to expand. So, they simply made their final move, a jump around the block to a 500-person capacity room at the end of Washington Street. The prior space would later become the Caledonia Lounge, a scrappy space for up-and-coming local acts to wet their beaks in the scene.
Throughout the various geographical changes, the 40 Watt – along with Pylon and their more well known acolytes, R.E.M. and The B-52′s – helped turn the small southern town into an established freak magnet drawing quality talent from throughout the United States. Athens came to represent the fun art party capital of the nation, with a downtown you can bike across in five minutes and a constant influx of young creative kids. The 40 Watt remains at the heart of Athens and its lure. When you have a show there, your band has reached a benchmark. And the bigger acts have maintained their loyalty, too. Rather than play larger rooms in town, the Drive-By Truckers prefer their well-established three-night runs at the Watt. Staying true to a for-musicians, by-musicians starting point has been instrumental in making the 40 Watt what it is, helping them steer clear of the Live Nation monster to remain an American original.

Athens is now bringing its punk-means-fun ethos to the world, albeit in the compressed form of the South by Southwest Conference and Festival (which can, at times, feel like an entire planet packed into one city). The Side Bar in Austin (sometimes called “Athens on steroids”) will play host to the 40 Watt/JamBase SXSW Show, which will feature 23 bands, almost all of them hailing from Athens. The diversity is kind of ridiculous, ranging from established juggernauts Dead Confederate and The Whigs to up-and-coming collegiate noisemakers Reptar and Gift Horse. Rounding out the bill are 40 Watt favorites from beyond Athens’ borders like J. Roddy Walston and The Business and Warpaint. Most impressively, legendary giants of the indie rock world Camper Van Beethoven will be performing.
“Last year, around four o’clock in the afternoon when we got to capacity, we were like, ‘Wow,’” says Rick Poss, the showcase’s organizer and longtime 40 Watt bartender. “Now, in our third year, the Side Bar recently acquired the building next door, so as the party’s been growing, so have we.”
It was Rick’s idea to name each of the three stages after great Athens musicians who passed away in the last year: the venerable Vic Chesnutt, Maserati drummer Jerry Fuchs, and Jon Guthrie, who lent his talents to the Michael Guthrie Band, among other stalwart punk crews. The club’s staff will be decamping out to the Texas sun to help run the show, bringing the 40 Watt’s vibe and its old-fashioned ideas about music being fun and pure with them. History may keep rolling but the 40 Watt lives on.
If you are at SXSW come on by the 40 Watt/JamBase Party on Saturday from noon-8 at The Side Bar.
