Nigeria’s most prominent rebel group says it has carried out an "unprecedented attack" on an oil tanker facility in Lagos state.

"The depot and loading tankers moored at the facility are currently on fire," said the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend).

It was not immediately clear whether the attack had taken place but police were investigating, reported Reuters.

Previous attacks by Mend have mostly hit the Niger Delta in the south.

In a statement, Mend said that "heavily armed" had "carried out an unprecedented attack on the Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos.

Attacks in the Niger Delta have severely cut Nigeria’s oil output. </p

Security Researchers Exploit Vulnerability in Handling of EV SSL Certificates

Two researchers will demonstrate a man-in-the-middle attack at the Black Hat security conference this month that allows them to silently sniff traffic on EV SSL protected Websites. The vulnerability in the way browsers treat EV SSL certificates makes them no more valuable than the cheapest SSL certificate, the researchers say.

Second death near Indonesia mine

Map

A security guard has been shot dead outside an Indonesian mine operated by the US company Freeport.

The attack, in Papua province, comes a day after an Australian man working for the company was shot dead in an ambush.

Police said suspected separatist militants had opened fire on officers investigating the earlier attack.

The huge Grasberg mine is a source of friction with local people, who have complained about its environmental impact and their share of its revenue.

Supporters of Papuan independence see the mine as a symbol of unfair rule from Jakarta. Two Americans and an Indonesian were shot dead in an ambush there in 2002.

A police spokesman was quoted by local media as saying that police engaged armed men in a gunbattle after the killing of the guard, named as Markus Rattealo, an employee of Freeport’s Indonesian subsidiary.

One report said five people were injured in the attack.

The resource-rich Papua province has been embroiled in separatist insurgency since the end of Dutch colonial rule in 1962.

The mine has some of the world’s largest recoverable copper and gold reserves. </p

Pakistan to try Mumbai suspects

Muslims protest in Mumbai

Pakistan says the trial of five men suspected of involvement in the attack on the Taj Hotel in Mumbai last November is likely to start next week.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said investigations were complete for these suspects and named another 12 men still wanted in connection with the case.

The charges show Pakistan is serious in pursuing suspects in the case despite Indian claims to the contrary, he said.

More than 170 people died in the attacks, including nine gunmen.

India has accused Pakistan-based fighters from the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba of carrying out the attacks.

Pakistan has admitted they were partly planned on its soil and the two countries have suffered seriously strained relations.

Timing

Mr Malik blamed India for any delay in bringing the charges.

He said Pakistan had sent India a list of questions on 12 February but only received answers on 9 June. This had enabled them to put a case together against five suspects already in custody.

There was no immediate response to the claims from Delhi.

Mr Malik said that after seeing how this investigation had been pursued, no-one should be in any doubt that Pakistan was serious in pursuing those responsible for the attacks.

"We are pretty sure that based on the evidence which our investigators have collected, the culprits will be punished," he said.

He said that he wished India had given as much co-operation in finding those responsible for killing Pakistanis when a cross-border train was blown up in February 2007.

The dossier detailing the charges against the five suspects for the Mumbai (Bombay) attack has been handed to the acting Indian high commissioner in Islamabad.

The BBC’s David Loyn in Islamabad says politically this development could not have come at a more opportune time for Pakistan.

The foreign ministers and prime ministers of Pakistan and India will meet next week during the summit of non-aligned nations in Egypt.

In order to begin dialogue again on its terms, Pakistan is eager to counter Indian accusations that it has not done all it can to pursue those responsible for the Mumbai attacks.

Mr Malik said that 15,000 Pakistani citizens had died in terrorist attacks since 2001.

"The terrorist threat in the region knew no boundaries and no-one has been more affected than Pakistan."</p

Contador blitzes clear of Armstrong

• Contador attack takes him above team-mate Lance Armstrong
• Fabian Cancellara loses yellow jersey to Rinaldo Nocentini

Alberto Contador’s stunning charge took him to within six seconds of the overall lead, as France’s Brice Feillu won the seventh stage of the Tour de France in a solo breakaway.

Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara, who trailed far behind the main pack, lost the yellow jersey he had held since the opening time trial to Italy’s Rinaldo Nocentini, who was fourth, but it was Contador who laid down a marker, finishing 21 seconds ahead of his Astana team-mate Lance Armstrong.

Armstrong lies third overall, eight seconds behind Nocentini – the first Italian to wear the yellow jersey since 2000 – after the 224km trek from Barcelona to the Andorran ski resort of Arcalis, the longest stage of the Tour.

Competitors scaled the “hors catégorie” Serra-Seca pass, before the climb into Arcalis that is one of the toughest ascents in professional cycling. Riders embark on two more days in the Pyrenees before a rest day Monday.

“It’s a nice victory,” said Feillu, a 23-year-old riding in his first Tour.
