Swiss “WikiLeaks banker” fined

Former Swiss private banker Rudolf Elmer was found guilty on Wednesday of charges including violating bank secrecy and attempted coercion. He was ordered to pay fines and was re-arrested shortly afterward on new charges.

Banker admits giving information to WikiLeaks

Former Swiss Banker Rudolf Elmer (55) admitted sending confidential client information to the tax authorities.

Elmer, who claims he gave WikiLeaks information about 2,000 offshore accounts, has denied threatening his former employer Julius Baer bank.

JPMorgan hires RBS banker as Asia Corp Bank CEO: Update

JPMorgan’s <JPM.N> corporate bank has hired a senior banker from Royal Bank of Scotland <RBS.L> as its new Asia chief executive, as it seeks more business growth from emerging economies.

Muhammad Aurangzeb, who was last head of global banking and markets for RBS in Southeast Asia as well as country executive for Singapore, will join the US bank in February, a JPMorgan spokeswoman confirmed in an email to Reuters.

JPMorgan hires RBS banker as Asia Corp Bank CEO

JPMorgan’s <JPM.SI> corporate bank has hired a senior banker from Royal Bank of Scotland <RBS.L> as its new Asia chief executive.

Muhammad Aurangzeb, who was previously head of global banking and markets for RBS in southeast Asia as well as country executive for Singapore, will join the US bank in February, a bank spokeswoman confirmed in an email to Reuters.

VTB Capital names ex-UBS banker Judy Lim CEO of Singapore unit

VTB Capital, Russia’s largest largest equity and debt underwriter this year, named Judy Lim chief executive officer of its Singapore unit.

Lim, a former banker at UBS AG and Morgan Stanley, joined VTB last year as head of global markets distribution in Asia, the Moscow-based bank said in a statement today.

She will report directly to VTB President Yuri Soloviev.

Barclays hires Deutsche banker for SE Asia role

Barclays Capital (BARC.L) has hired Sandeep Pahwa from Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) as its new head of investment banking for Southeast Asia, sources said on Tuesday, as the British bank builds a deal-making team in the region.

Pahwa, who was last overseeing Southeast Asian investment banking at Deutsche Bank, will join Barclays in November, two sources familiar with the move told Reuters.

Deutsche names ex-DBS banker Raju CEO for DWS Asia

Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) said on Wednesday its DWS Investments unit has appointed Rajan Raju as CEO for Asia as well as global head, DWS Solutions.

Raju, the former head of consumer banking at Singapore’s DBS (DBSM.SI), will be report to Ingo Gefeke, global head of distribution and product management at DWS Investments.

 
DWS is the brand name for all mutual funds offered by Deutsche Asset Management. Raju is leaving DBS after 11 years with the bank.

The German government has condemned an official with the country’s central bank on the publication of his book on immigration issues. Bundesbank board member Thilo Sarrazin’s book, Germany Abolishes Itself, states that Muslim immigrants refuse to integrate.

Credit Suisse to switch NY-based banker to Singapore

Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX) is moving a senior banker, who led its global structuring group in fixed income in New York, to a new role in asset management in Singapore.

Sudip Thakor, who will be initially based in New York as head of global emerging markets products in the asset management division, will move to Singapore in his new role next year, according to an internal note seen by Reuters

Standard Chartered ordered to pay banker it fired on first day

Standard Chartered Plc was ordered by Singapore’s High Court to pay Fermin Aldabe for wrongful dismissal after the lender’s global senior risk manager said he would resign on his first day on the job.
 
The London-based bank must pay Aldabe at least $40,333 including one month’s salary of S$27,500 and his wage from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30, 2008, Justice Steven Chong said in his judgment today. Aldabe was fired after saying he’d resign when told he wouldn’t be paid for a two-week period before the start date stipulated in his offer letter.

Senior Goldman Asia banker Sinha to retire

Goldman Sachs (GS.N) co-head of investment banking for Asia, Ravi Sinha, is retiring from the bank in June and will be replaced by David Ryan, currently the investment bank’s chairman for Southeast Asia, a source familiar with the move said on Tuesday.

DBS may gain on news Peter Seah to be new Chairman

DBS (D05.SG) may gain on appointment of veteran Singapore banker Peter Seah as lender’s new chairman from May 1, replacing Koh Boon Hwee. Seah, a banker for 33 years, retired in 2001 as CEO, vice-chairman of Overseas Union Bank after UOB (U11.SG) acquired it that year.

UBS’s senior Asian investment banker resigns

UBS’s (UBSN.VX) joint head of equity capital markets and a 10-year veteran at the bank, Sutha Kandiah, has resigned, a source with knowledge of the move told Reuters on Wednesday.

Kandiah, who was based in Singapore, oversaw multi-billion dollar equity deals in the region such as Malaysia’s Maxis’s (MXSC.KL) US$3.3 billion ($4.6 billion) IPO and share sale of Southeast Asia’s  biggest bank DBS (DBSM.SI). In the past, he also headed Japan’s  equity capital market team.
