Barnes and Noble Nook Now Has Android-Based Games

Barnes Noble announced that its Nook e-reader would receive a software update, complete with three new features, in coming days. Those features include Read In Store, which allows Nook users to access entire books while at a Barnes Noble store, a basic Web browser and games. Barnes Noble finds itself embroiled in competition not only against Amazon.com and its popular Kindle device, but also Apples iPad, whose e-books application leverages the tablet PCs full-color screen. Both Amazon and Barnes Noble have been exploring partnerships with Target, Best Buy and other retailers as a way to expand their market presence.

Barnes Noble plans to release an e-reader application for Apple’s upcoming iPad tablet PC, suggesting that the bookseller has truly embraced a strategy of porting its e-reader brand onto as many screens as possible even as its own device, the Nook, prepares to compete directly against the iPad. Dulins Books introduced the Boox 60, a $349 e-reader it will begin shipping in January. The Portland companys Wi-Fi-connecting e-reader faces steep competition from giants Amazon.com, Barnes Noble and Sony.

Barnes Noble says it will offer a $100 gift certificate to users whose Nook e-readers were due to arrive by Dec. 24 but will be delayed due to high demand and shipping issues. Amazon Says Kindle for BlackBerry Coming Soon

Amazon.com plans to expand its Kindle e-reader franchise onto BlackBerry smartphones, according to a note on the online retail Website. Kindle applications can already be downloaded for the iPhone and Windows PCs. Barnes and Noble’s Nook E-Reader Delayed

Barnes Noble will push back the ship date of its Nook e-reader into December for many pre-orders, apparently in response to higher-than-expected demand for the device. Even as Barnes Noble gears up to battle Amazon.com’s Kindle line of devices, it faces a lawsuit from IT startup Spring Design, which alleges that the bookseller copied its dual-screen format.
