A showdown for Major League Baseball: Game on

Creditors go to bat against the rules of a hallowed American sport

WHEN a company defaults on its debts, it typically enters bankruptcy; its assets are sold and the proceeds are divvied up among creditors under court supervision. Not so when one of those assets is a Major League Baseball (MLB) team. Under rules established by the league’s commissioner, who is chosen by the clubs’ owners, any sale of a team must be approved by at least 23 of the game’s 30 franchises. The league says this rule is protected by its 80-year-old exemption from American antitrust law. The Texas Rangers’ declaration of bankruptcy on May 24th will put that claim to the test.

In 1998 Tom Hicks, a leveraged-buy-out specialist, bought the Rangers for $250m from a group of owners that included George W. Bush. He soon authorised a bevy of disastrously expensive contracts for players, including a ten-year, $252m deal for Alex Rodriguez, a star hitter, which was twice as costly as the previous record. To pay its bloated salaries, the club had to ask MLB for a $25m loan in 2009. It also missed a mandatory $40m payment into a fund for deferred player compensation. …

Google Feels Noose Tighten in Italy, Brussels, China, U.S.

From its executives being charged for privacy violations in Italy, to formal complaints from Microsoft-supported entities in Brussels and Google’s joust with China over a hack, Google is facing adversity from many fronts in the first two months of 2010. Moreover, many adversaries want to paint Google as the next Microsoft. This is probably not the start to the year the company envisioned, but Google has to deal with each issue with care lest it suffer additional blows to its image, let alone its business.

News Analysis: When you’re the hottest team in town,
everyone is gunning for you. No, we’re not talking about Major League

Baseball in China: Striking out

America’s baseball moguls hope to follow basketball’s lead in China

IN A few days America’s pitchers and catchers are due to report for spring training. So you would expect the managers of the New York Yankees, the “world” champions (meaning winners of America’s main tournament), to be in America frantically trying to plug holes in the team’s line-up or, at the very least, subverting similar efforts by their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. Instead, the team’s president, Randy Levine, and general manager, Brian Cashman, are busy with a much trickier task: hauling the championship trophy around China in the hope of drumming up interest in a country that views a baseball as something to be manufactured and sold (which it does by the million), rather than thrown and hit (which it barely does at all).

Somewhere in China, reasons Mr Cashman, there is a kid who can throw a baseball at 98mph (158kph). Find him, turn him into a star and he will awaken a nation of fans. He points to the spectacular commercial success of America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) in China after the recruitment of the seven-and-a-half-foot Yao Ming, from Shanghai, to the Houston Rockets, whose jerseys are a ubiquitous presence on the backs of Chinese children. …

Mobile Websites for Google, Yahoo and Major League Baseball are the first ever to earn passing grades on Yankee Groups Mobile Web Report Card. The all-time high went to Google for, in part, its ability to detect location and the users device.
