Bassist Johnny Grubb Joins Emmitt-Nershi Band

FORMER RAILROAD EARTH BASSIST FILLS VACANT SLOT

Emmitt-Nershi Band

With Tyler Grant recently announcing his departure from the Emmitt-Nershi Band, fans have
been anxiously awaiting
the announcement of the new bass player for the band. Today, it has been announced that Johnny Grubb
of Railroad Earth will be filling the
spot. Read Johnny’s official message below.

“Hello, World! Rather than make someone else come up with an announcement for who the new bassist will be, I
thought I’d try to follow in Tyler’s gracious footsteps and do it myself.

My name is Johnny Grubb. I went to school at Appalachian State University and saw Leftover Salmon
many, many times my first couple of years there. After ASU, I spent a good year rolling burritos, washing dishes and
playing bluegrass in my hometown of Atlanta before serendipitously running into John Skehan of Railroad Earth one
night at a gig of ours. They just happened to be on the lookout for a new bassist and long story short, I spent 7
years in that band, playing several metric tons of great music and meeting lots of great folks all over the
country.

One of the folks I met and had the good fortune of playing with on many occasions was Mr. Billy Nershi. RRE was
signed to SCI Fidelity Records for a number of years and we got to be friends with a bunch of the SCI/Mad House
folks in time. RRE always was and still is a full-time commitment. I just couldn’t keep it up with the birth of my
second boy last January, so I bowed out a year ago and spent this past year getting a web development consultancy
off the ground, getting to know the virtues and vices of the various open source software scenes out there and being
home with my wife and boys for the first time ever. The itch to play some bass didn’t come back until just a few
months ago after getting into the most recent Larry Keel and Stringduster’s CDs.

In any event, I cruised by this website last month to see what they were working with from a technical standpoint.
The meaning of Tyler’s announcement that he was leaving didn’t really hit me until the next day, at least not the part
where I should give Billy a call and see who they have lined up. I wasn’t looking for another full-time gig, nor to be
in another rock band per se, so after speaking with Billy and Drew it seemed like the parameters were pretty well
lined up for everybody and here I am!

Just to put a bow on top of everything, I met Andy years ago when he was with Larry Keel and didn’t find out until
the last few weeks that he was a member of the Broke Mountain Bluegrass band with Travis from the Infamous
Stringdusters and my good friend Anders from Greensky Bluegrass. It’s nice to be a part of this small world and I
want to thank my new bandmates for having me aboard. I will see you all soon.”

Them Crooked Vultures Benefit For Ailing EODM Bassist

CONTEMPORARY ROCK GREAT DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER
FRIENDS SADDLE UP TO HELP WITH MEDICAL COSTS, SHOWS

Brian O’Connor

Eagles of Death Metal bassist Brian O’Connor has been diagnosed with cancer, and is undergoing treatment in Los Angeles. He will undergo surgery today and will begin chemotherapy in three weeks.

When Brian alerted members of his vast family of bands of his diagnosis, a human chain of support formed immediately. Members of Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures and Rage Against The Machine, all touring in various locations around the globe, mobilized to take the load off Brian, so he could focus on preparing his mind and body for what lay ahead.

Brian has no health insurance, so the first order of business was to organize a London show and an LA show to raise money for his medical expenses.

Them Crooked Vultures announced the London show today; they have added a July 5 Brixton Academy date to their European festival run. Details for the Los Angeles show are being finalized now and will be announced soon.

Eagles of Death Metal have decided to honor all tour dates in their schedule. Dean Fertita from The Dead Weather and QOTSA will fill in for Brian on EODM’s dates this week in Toronto, Santa Cruz and San Francisco. A friend will stand in for Brian on EODM tour dates until he returns.

Below is a statement from Brian:

In regards to my current health situation, with the remarkable support and love from my amazing friends and family, I am receiving the best medical and moral attention one could ask for. I cannot thank everyone enough for their continued support and involvement. I am excited for my full recovery and look forward to getting back to what I love most, melting face with my bass. I’m feeling great, after all, I am half unicorn. Keep ya posted.

Love and gratitude,
BOC

It’s been a rough couple of months for Interpol. First, bassist and founding member Carlos D left the

Pajo has a vast body of work. He was the guitarist for Slint. He has recorded as Papa M

Railroad Earth: NYE, Hitting Studio Bassist Grubb’s Last Shows

RAILROAD EARTH ANNOUNCE NEW YEAR’S PLANS, NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS

Railroad Earth

After a largely successful fall tour, Railroad Earth is wrapping up a momentous 2009 with performances on both coasts before heading to the studio for their forthcoming album. The six-piece Americana outfit is scheduled for a short east coast run before heading to San Francisco’s Fillmore on December 27 and 28, and Portland, OR’s Crystal Ballroom December 30 and 31 for a New Year’s Eve blow out.

The New Year’s performance will mark the final show with long-time bass player and friend, Johnny Grubb, who recently resigned from the project. With numerous sell-out performances around the country, the final performances with Grubb are not to be missed. The band will be taking the first part of 2010 to focus on the creation and release of their sixth album before hitting the road again in the summer.

Railroad Earth’s most successful year to date, 2009 saw the band grace stages at some of the country’s most prestigious festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury, and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. In their relatively short tenure, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums and amassed an impressive national following with sold-out shows from coast-to-coast.

Mixing an unlikely blend of instruments to make up their well-traveled sound, the project features Todd Sheaffer (lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (violin, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Grubb (upright bass).

Joe Craven & Sam Bevan Album

Joe Craven & Sam Bevan collaborate on new CD

Foakee – OUT NOW

Joe Craven

When you take a blues, rock, folk, whirled music multi-instrumentalist and a classically trained pianist/jazz trained bassist and put them together to have their way with traditional American folk songs, you can get something like the Joe Craven/Sam Bevan collaboration called Foakee.

Gospel, blues, Appalachian, Cuban, West African, hip-hop, Brazilian and jazz influences are all combined with sound samples, and looping technology to create beats from mouth, found objects and conventional acoustic on this album. The fun, innovative tribute to the old and the new, on Foakee, creates a fresh cocktail of sound stretching the boundaries of musical style while paying tribute to and forwarding evolving musical traditions.

Joe Craven is a madman with anything that has strings attached or not: violin, mandolin, tin can, bedpan, cookie tin, tenor guitar, mouth bow, banjo, berimbau, balalaika, boot ‘n lace, animal bones, squeeze toys, cake pans, waste cans, umbrella stands, martini shakers, and so on. Mandolin Magazine lauded Joe as, “One of the most daringly inventive musicians working today.” As an educator, former museum curator, visual artist, actor/storyteller and festival emcee, Joe plays all kinds of music and he has made it with all kinds of artists ranging from jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli to Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia to banjo player Alison Brown to The Persuasions.

When it comes to Sam Bevan, Guitar World’s Bass Guitar Magazine says, “Bay Area jazzman Bevan is a bassist for all occasions…” Sam’s own recordings showcase not only his chops but his composing and arrangement abilities as well. Sam is a first call bassist, having played and/or recorded with a variety of artists including Roswell Rudd, David Grisman, Geoff Muldaur and more.
