iPad Battery Replacement Policy Likely Points to Potential Issues

Apples strategy for replacing faulty iPad batteries amounts to sending back a whole new, date-free device, at a cost of $105.95 to the user. The policy, says one analyst, is likely a plan to head-off expected battery issues.
– Apples Battery Replacement Service for the iPad is a bit of misnomer, Apple Insider reported over the weekend, reading into some Apple fine print.

Instead of replacing a battery with a “diminished ability to hold an
electrical charge,” Apple will simply replace the iPad for a fee, after

Microsoft’s Week Involved Battery Complaints, Falling Mobile Share, Security

Microsoft dealt with a number of issues this week, including complaints from a small number of Windows 7 users about degraded battery life for their laptops running the operating system, and reports that some users who installed one of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday security updates are receiving the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. Microsoft is gearing up for next weeks Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the company is scheduled to make a high-profile announcement regarding its plans in the mobile space. This announcement will most likely be the unveiling of Windows Mobile 7, its much-rumored smartphone operating system, although recent rumors suggest that Microsoft is interested in potentially acquiring BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

users about poor battery life for some laptops running the operating system.
Some of those users reported experiencing battery life as short as 15 minutes

Microsoft Says Windows 7 Battery Issues Are Batteries’ Fault

Microsoft claims its engineers have been exploring complaints of poor battery life for some laptops running Windows 7, and that in every case the operating system is not at fault. Instead, Windows 7 had correctly evaluated via a new feature that those users batteries were failing, Microsoft said in a Feb. 8 blog posting. However, posts on Microsoft Watch, TechNet and other discussion forums seem to suggest that at least a percentage of users experiencing these issues also had batteries that were either new or nearly-new, which in turn is raising further questions.
– Microsoft’s engineers have been exploring the alleged battery-life issues
associated with Windows 7 running on laptops, and report that the operating
system is not causing those batteries to prematurely fail. In every case, claimed an official Microsoft blog posting on Feb. 8, Windows 7 correctly …

Microsoft Windows 7 Battery Life Claims Spark Investigation

Microsoft is investigating claims from irate users over allegedly poor battery life for laptops running Windows 7, an issue that primarily seems to be affecting users who upgraded from either Windows Vista or Windows XP. While the number of users affected is unknown, complaints about battery life as low as 15 minutes have been reported on Microsoft forums as far back as June 2009. Microsoft has seen the adoption rate for Windows 7 steadily climb since its Oct. 22 release, with one research firm suggesting that 7.5 percent of PCs now run the operating system.

Battery thoughts

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the battery will be a big issue with electric cars. It is not going away. There’s the technical performance issue (range, charge-cycles, charge time), charging infrastructure itself and the whole question of how it’s all paid for. That issue of how it’s paid for also comes with the knowledge that batteries are getting technically better all the time. You don’t want to be stuck with paying for an inferior battery that has been superseded by much better ones. Imagine what that does to the residual value of your car.

Batteries that the customer leases rather than buys might be one way to tackle it. However, I do like the idea of batteries that you simply swap. If battery swap stations were created that worked on clear industry standards and were quick to use, I can imagine that appealing to consumers who for one reason or another don’t want to or cannot easily charge the battery themselves (eg high-rise dwellers without reliable access to a parking space with charge point).

Every now and then, you just go and swap it. It might also meet the concern over degrading battery efficiency over time. When you pick up a battery there is perhaps a sliding scale of prices based on the number of charge-cycles the battery has already had. And a refuelling experience that sounds as easy as filling up with gasoline would have its attractions.

There would need to be a lot of swap stations though; a long special journey to get to one would be self-defeating in a vehicle where range is everything.

It could however, potentially, solve the ‘second-order CO2′ problem that arises from the generation of electricity at the power station. The newly produced swap batteries could be guaranteed zero-emission on power generation if they were, say, charged in a ring-fenced way – eg at a dedicated facility that charges them up via wave or wind power. Maybe the customer would pay a premium for a ‘zero emission battery’ if it was costly to do, but I’d guess some people would be more than happy to.

Nissan rolls out new electric car

Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn stands next to Nissan's new electronic vehicle, the Leaf.

Japanese carmaker Nissan has unveiled its first electric car, taking it closer to its aim to become the first car firm to mass produce the vehicles.

The zero-emission hatchback vehicle, called Leaf, is set to go on sale in Japan, the US and Europe next year.

Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn did not announce the prices but said it would be "very competitive".

"The monthly cost of the battery, plus the electric charge, will be less than the cost of gasoline," Mr Ghosn said.

Nissan, Japan’s third largest carmaker, has been slower than rivals Toyota and Honda to embrace hybrids, which run on petrol and electric engines, and is instead pinning its hopes on solely battery-powered cars.

"We need to invest a lot of money to build the car plants"

Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn

The future of electric motoring

Electric cars have struggled to become mainstream because of limited battery life and high costs.

But Mr Ghosn insisted that the Leaf would not be a niche-market vehicle.

"We need to invest a lot of money to build the car plants and the battery plants at a moment where all the auto companies are saving investments," he said.

"But there is such a high potential that we (will) go ahead with it."

Nissan has chosen the UK as one of its bases to produce batteries for electric cars.

It is investing £200m at its Sunderland factory, which is expected to create 350 jobs.

Nissan has said that it plans to make 100,000 electric cars a year by 2012. </p
