DBS Q4 beats forecast with net profit of $493m; eyes Asia expansion

DBS Group (DBSM.SI), Southeast Asia’s biggest bank, said it was well positioned to grow its Asian business after posting a forecast-beating 67% rise in quarterly profit, dodging significant losses from Dubai.

This was DBS’s first results under new chief executive Piyush Gupta, who investors are hoping will herald the Singapore lender’s expansion outside the city-state and Hong Kong and guide the bank to build a formidable Asian business.

VMware Beats Street Forecasts in Q4 Earnings Report

VMware reports its revenue increased 18 percent to $608 million in the fourth quarter, substantially above the average analyst forecast of $554 million. The virtualization company also reports profit of 31 cents a share, which beat the average analyst forecast of 26 cents.

Google Beats the Street in Q4 with Rising Profit, Sales

Google reports fourth-quarter earnings and sales that trumped analysts’ expectations, with profit of $1.97 billion, or $6.13 a share. Excluding stock-based compensation, Google garnered an EPS of $6.79 on sales of $4.95 billion. Wall Street analysts had expected Google to report sales of $4.9 billion on EPS of $6.50. Google CEO Eric Schmidt talked about Google’s future investments, noting that people were the primary investment, particularly top-notch computer engineers, programmers and researchers. Google won the battle with Microsoft for the right to move Los Angeles’ 30,000 municipal employees to its e-mail system, knocking out Novell’s GroupWise platform for the $7.25 million contract. The city plans to complete implementation of the Google system by June and will begin with a pilot period during which a limited number of employees will test the system. However, the contract comes with a caveat. Google must compensate the city if its e-mail service is breached and data is stolen. The Los Angeles Council voted to add the penalty provision 9-3. Consumer advocates applauded this motion.

EMC Profits Down 24% but Revenue Beats Street Predictions

Storage company EMC reports overall third-quarter revenue is down 5 percent from a year ago. Nonetheless, EMC, which predicted overall 2009 earnings of 87 cents per common stock share, posted a performance that surpassed most Wall Street expectations in the slow-moving world economy.
