The Luyas: Too Beautiful To Work

CANADIAN INDIE ROCKERS UNVEIL NEW ALBUM DETAILS

The Luyas are set to release
their album Too Beautiful To Work, out February 22. The new record is the long-awaited follow-
up to 2007′s Faker Death.

Mining the vast musical resources of their hometown of Montreal, The Luyas weave beguiling dream pop using an
artistic edge and a unique blend of instrumentation. Over a locked down rhythm section of organ and drums,
Piet Amato (formerly of Arcade
Fire) gets mad scientist on the French Horn, running it through a bevy of effects, adding both atmospherics,
and lead sounds from his mighty horn. Meanwhile, lead singer Jessie Stein sings in her unique and sincere
vocal style while playing both electric guitar and a Moodswinger. The Moodswinger is a 12-string experimental
zither with a third bridge. There are only about a dozen Moodswingers that exist in the world, you can read more

It’s A Wonderful Life

Freebass is an English super group formed by bass guitar legends Peter Hook (Joy Division, New
Order), Mani Mounfield (Stone Roses, Primal Scream), and Andy Rourke (The Smiths). Â“All of the
songs have three basses. Mani does the low part, Andy Rourke’s in the middle and I do the high bitÂ… it works out
quite well!Â” stated Hook in a late 2005 NME interview. Gary Briggs (Haven, The Strays) serves as the band’s
full time singer.

Prior to the release of Freebass’ full-length It’s a Beautiful Life, Rourke amicably parted ways with
the group and
relocated to New York City and in September 2010, the band officially announced they were no longer a functioning
group. Â“Recent events have made Freebass entirely unviable as a band, and with this in mind, it has been decided
that the project should be shelved, rather than placed on hiatus while members pursue their other interests. We
hope that people will enjoy the album, which concludes five years of work and treat it on its own merits. No third
parties were involved or harmed in the break up.Â”

Atlantic recording artist Jason Mraz has announced details of his upcoming new CD/DVD, Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess – Live On Earth. The much anticipated 2-disc set – which follows 2008′s RIAA platinum-certified We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things – arrives everywhere November 10.

Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess – Live on Earth captures the Grammy-nominated tunesmith at his onstage best; performing a wide array of his greatest hits, including the history-making #1 single, “I’m Yours.” Filmed and recorded this past August as Jason’s blockbuster Gratitude Cafe Tour hit Chicago’s Charter One Pavilion, the collection also includes a stellar live take on the Top 10 smash, “Lucky” – complete with a special guest appearance from Colbie Caillat – as well as a few new favorites.

The DVD – directed by Darren Doane (“I’m Yours,” “Lucky,” as well as videos from such diverse artists as Van Morrison, Shinedown, and Underoath) features the full-length concert, never-before-seen backstage footage, and the exclusive new mockumentary, Un Beau Desordre.
Mraz will herald the release of Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess – Live on Earth with a live TV performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, slated for Thursday, November 12 (check local listings).

In other news, Jason has received a 2009 American Music Awards nomination as Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist – fans can vote now here. The 2009 American Music Awards will be broadcast live on ABC Sunday, November 22 at 8 p.m. ET. The San Diego-based singer/songwriter was also among the honorees at last week’s 20th Anniversary Environmental Media Awards, celebrating his work towards increasing public awareness of, and inspiring personal action on, various environmental issues. Other honorees included Sir Richard Branson and the National Geographic Society.

A gifted and charismatic live performer, Mraz will soon embark on his first-ever tour of South America, with multiple dates scheduled in Argentina and Brazil. Upon his return, Jason will hit New York City’s Feinstein’s at the Regency for two very special charity shows, being billed as The True Colors Cabaret. Presented in partnership with the True Colors Fund, Broadway Impact, and Feinstein’s at the Regency, the event – set for December 21, with both performances already sold out – will see Mraz pairing up with the Broadway Inspirational Voices for an evening of music in support of GLBT equality. BIG motor shows are good barometers of the car industry’s mood. Twelve months ago in Paris, in the wake of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the mood was dread—the knowledge that something terrible was about to happen. At the beginning of this year, at the show in devastated Detroit, and a few months later in Geneva as Chrysler and General Motors prepared for bankruptcy, it was all about the struggle to survive. This week in Frankfurt the industry gave a sigh of relief, confident that the worst was over but painfully aware there would be no return to business as usual any time soon, if ever.

The sense of relief is understandable. After the collapse in sales and savage production cutbacks that took place in nearly every big market nine months ago—with the huge exception of China—volumes have started to rise as inventories are cautiously rebuilt. Balance-sheets appear to have been stabilised if not repaired. There is even a good chance that in the final quarter of this year some of the big carmakers will return to (very modest) profit, while others will do so next year. Credit, the lifeblood of the industry, is flowing again, albeit somewhat anaemically. Particularly in Europe, government-sponsored scrappage schemes have brought buyers back into the market. And manufacturers are now enjoying reduced costs, partly from lower raw-material prices and partly because they have laid off workers. …
