When referendums work: Vox pops

A referendum can seal a peace deal. Or shatter it

WOULD a referendum help or hinder a peace deal between Palestinians and Israelis? On October 10th a ministerial committee, responding to pressure from hawkish Israelis, approved a bill mandating such a vote. By approving it, Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, was sending a signal to hardliners that land would not be ceded without consent. But doveish types moaned that he was erecting new obstacles to a settlement, perhaps deliberately. Real diehards grumbled that a ballot might be a trick to bypass them.

That has sparked interest in the role of referendums in disputed territories. A web page on the subject maintained by Queen’s University Belfast, reported a surge of Middle Eastern visitors. They will not have found a clear answer: such polls may be a landmark on the road to peace or a roadblock. The keys are the timing, the question and the electorate. …

James Bond ‘based on real life MI6 special agent’

The moment when the fictional spy emerges from the water in a wetsuit and plants explosives before unzipping the suit to reveal a spotless dinner suit really [...]

Arrested over Belfast riot shootings

Two men have been arrested by police investigating a shooting in which three police officers were injured in north Belfast on 12 July.
The men, aged 25 and 35, were taken to Antrim police station for questioning about the gun attack in North Queen Street, during a riot on Monday.

More flight misery as ash cloud returns

Flights in and out of the UK and Ireland face severe disruption due to the return of Icelandic volcanic ash. Already authorities have announced that flights to and from Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland have been stopped until at least 12pm GMT.

British polls produce hung parliament

LONDON – No British political party has been able to secure an outright majority in the House of Commons and there will now be a frantic period of negotiations between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to decide the shape of the next government.
The general election has led to the first hung parliament since 1974, with the Conservatives bagging 306 seats to become the biggest party in the 650-member House, but could not win an overall majority – 326 seats – and face power-sharing talks after falling short of an overall majority, final vote results showed Friday.
Although the Conservatives have won the most seats, the largest party does not automatically have the right to try to form an administration.
The Labour party won 258 seats and the Liberal Democrats 57, after the last result from all constituencies contested in elections on Thursday was announced.
By winning 57 seats, the Liberal Democrats have made it impossible for the Conservatives to win the 326 seats they need to govern alone.
Northern IrelandÂ’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) won eight; the Scottish National Party (SNP) six; Sinn Fein five; the Welsh Plaid Cymru three; Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) three in Northern Ireland, with one each for Greens and the Alliance Party, the latter in Belfast. One seat has been won by another candidate.
One seat has yet to be decided: an election will be held for the constituency of Thirsk and Malton in northeast England on May 27, after one of the candidates fighting it died during the election campaign.
Under Britain’s election rules, Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown has the right to attempt to form a coalition first, but he accepted Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg’s decision to talk with Cameron first. Cameron and Clegg would be “entitled to take as much time as they feel necessary,” Brown said, while offering to talk to the Lib Dems if they failed.
“Clearly should the discussions between Cameron and Clegg come to nothing then I would of course be prepared to discuss with Clegg the areas where there may be some measure of agreement between our two parties,” he said.
Until Brown and Cameron’s statements, the centre-left prime minister’s key allies said Labour, which has ruled since 1997, would try to cling to power through a deal with the centrist Lib Dems. But Clegg said the Conservatives, as the largest party in the new parliament, had the “first right to seek to govern”.
In a statement in Westminster, Conservative’s leader David Cameron held out a “big, open and comprehensive offer” to the Liberal Democrats to work together in government.
He acknowledged that there would have to be reform of the electoral system and he proposed the creation of an all-party committee of inquiry to look at the issue. It was not immediately clear whether CameronÂ’s offer would involve a formal coalition with Liberal Democrats ministers in a cabinet.
As a major carrot to attract Lib Dems support, Cameron offered an all-party committee of inquiry on political and electoral reform to look at the possibility of changing WestminsterÂ’s first-past-the-post voting system. But he stopped short of promising the immediate legislation on a referendum on voting reform offered by Prime Minister Gordon Brown less than an hour earlier.
Cameron stressed that it was essential that the parties were able to offer leadership to the country: “Britain voted for change yesterday, but it also voted for a new politics, it did not vote for party political bickering, grandstanding and point-scoring.
“Our country’s problems are too serious, they are too urgent for that. So we must all rise to this occasion, we must show leadership.”
Cameron outlined the areas of policy agreement between the Conservatives and Lib Dems, which he said offered “a strong basis for a strong government”.
At the same time he stressed that – unlike the Lib Dems – the Tories remained “completely convinced” that the new government would have to start cutting BritainÂ’s record 163 billion pounds deficit this year. “This has been more than confirmed by recent events in other European countries, recent instability in the markets and recent conversations that we have had both with the Treasury and the Bank of England,” he said.
AFP adds: Britain could yet face fresh election within months, despite the start of talks between Conservatives and Liberal Democrats on a possible power-sharing deal in a hung parliament, experts warned.
David CameronÂ’s centre-right Tories and Nick CleggÂ’s centrist Liberal Democrats could struggle to find common ground since they strongly disagree on issues including Europe, defence and immigration, analysts said.
If the two parties fail to reach agreement, the Liberal Democrats could still make a pact with Prime Minister Gordon BrownÂ’s Labour party, which lost its overall majority in ThursdayÂ’s general election.
“Either way there’s going to be an election again soon, probably before the end of the year,” Victoria Honeyman, a politics lecturer at Leeds University, told AFP.
Monitoring Desk adds: Following a chaotic general election result, political horse-trading aimed at cobbling together BritainÂ’s first coalition government for decades has begun, reported Christian Science Monitor.
The political landscape is a mess after no one party emerged with enough seats to form a majority in Parliament. The ball, however, appears to be in the court of David Cameron, the British Conservative leader whose party won the most votes but fell short of the majority that only a few months ago was considered to be within his grasp.
Nick Clegg, whose centrist Liberal Democrats failed to shatter the Labour and Tory duopoly on power, said that the Conservatives had the first right to seek to govern after winning the biggest mandate in terms of votes and seats.
Before potentially approaching Mr CleggÂ’s party for support, however, the Tories may seek woo Northern IrelandÂ’s Democratic Unionist Party.
Meanwhile, donÂ’t write off Gordon Brown, who has returned to Downing Street from his home constituency in Scotland. His party defied predictions that were made as late as last week that it was headed for an electoral wipeout.

Alberta Cross: Tour Dates

Alberta Cross Sells Out Shows Across The U.S., Tour Confirmed With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Alberta Cross

Alberta Cross just wrapped up their first ever nationwide headlining tour where they performed to sold out crowds in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco and more. This spring, Alberta Cross will tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Their latest album, Broken Side of Time arrives on the heels of their EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker, which earned the band U.K. touring slots with Oasis, The Shins and Bat For Lashes.

Founded by guitarist/vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee and bassist Terry Wolfers, Alberta Cross took shape when the two began jamming together in London’s east end. Stakee, from London by way of Sweden, and Wolfers, a Brit himself, moved to New York City in 2008 in pursuit of renewed creative energy and new challenges. Broken Side of Time is born of the struggles and setbacks the band faced along the way. The album serves as Alberta Cross’ official introduction to the U.S.

As Stakee explains, “It’s kind of a desperation album, a darker album; it’s definitely angrier. We’ve been in a crazy place during the whole album and you can hear that.”

Led by Stakee and Wolfers, Alberta Cross is rounded out by guitarist Sam Kearney, drummer Austin Beede and keyboardist Alec Higgins. Broken Side of Time was recorded in Austin, TX and produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Dead Confederate, Heartless Bastards). John O’Mahony (Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Kasabian) mixed the album at Electric Lady in New York City.

Efterklang: Magic Chairs

EFTERKLANG TO MAKE 4AD LABEL DEBUT WITH MAGIC CHAIRS, OUT 2/23

Efterklang

Newly signed to 4AD, the Copenhagen-based quartet Efterklang make their label debut with Magic Chairs, their third full-length studio album, out February 23.

Efterklang are Mads Brauer (electronics and various instruments), Casper Clausen (vocals and various instruments), Thomas Husmer (drums and trumpet) and Rasmus Stolberg (bass and guitar).

Removing themselves from their home city and heading to Aarhus’ Feedback Recording Studio, the band recorded basic tracks as a band (drums, bass, guitars and piano), replicating the live set-up from where the songs had initially taken form. Later, back in Copenhagen, orchestral flourishes were added and guest musicians were called upon (including their touring band members – Peter Broderick, Heather W. Broderick, Frederik Teige and Daniel James).

For even greater clarity of sound, British engineer and producer Gareth Jones (Nick cave and The Bad Seeds, Depeche Mode, Interpol, Mogwai, Grizzly Bear, Wire and more) was drafted in for mixing duties to work alongside their in-house electronics wizard in Brauer.

John Hiatt: The Open Road

JOHN HIATT TO RELEASE THE OPEN ROAD MARCH 2

John Hiatt

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt‘s brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter’s 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O’Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. “All the other years, my songs are about coming home,” Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he’s played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded “Thing Called Love.” On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and “Haulin’.” Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.

Yeasayer: 2010 Tour Dates

YEASAYER TO TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ODD BLOOD

Yeasayer

Yeasayer is pleased to announce a full U.S. tour beginning in April to support their fantastic upcoming full-length, Odd Blood. This follows three U.S. dates in February – a performance at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and two already sold old shows in New York City, at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Odd Blood will be available February 9 via Secretly Canadian (Mute elsewhere). First brewed in the frosty hills of Woodstock, NY at the Marotta lair, then transferred to the steely sweeps of NYC, Odd Blood took many layers to finalize, but with all things Yeasayer the outcome is spectacular. Filled with the band’s own take on pop pleasures and experimentation, the band has once again carved its own path through that ice cold glacier that is modern pop/rock.
