Serbia has 75 registered political parties
Serbia now has 75 registered political parties, 42 of those set up by the country’s ethnic minorities, statistics show. 21 have headquarters in Belgrade, nine in Novi Sad, eight in Novi Pazaar, and six in the town of Subotica.
Shenzhen delegation visits Belgrade
A delegation of the Chinese city of Shenzhen, which will be the host of the 2011 Universiade, paid a visit to the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce (PKB) on Tuesday. The Chinese city officials wished to learn about Belgrade’s experience in organizing the sporting event in 2009.
“Quint must have known”, says ex-UN official
The so-called Quint countries “must have known about the allegations made in the recent report by Council of Europe (CoE) Rapporteur Dick Marty”. The five countries – U.S., Britain, Germany, France and Italy – had access to information, resources and a long history of work with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), former U.S. diplomat and UN Regional Representative in northern Kosovo Gerard Gallucci told Belgrade’s Politika newspaper in an interview.
No incidents expected in Kosovo, says DM
Defense Minister Dragan Å utanovac Belgrade’s Blic daily that no incidents are expected in Kosovo when the dialogue between Belgrade and PriÅ¡tina starts. The dialogue should start as soon as possible, he said.
Serbians to get “another free share”
Eligible Serbian citizens will this month receive one free share each, this time from the Belgrade International Airport Nikola Tesla.
The value of the share will be some RSD 600 (EUR 5.7). Along with five shares per citizen from the NIS privatization, this would bring the value of the package to just over EUR 30.
“Passports for 80,000 ethnic Hungarians”
Hungary expects to issue 80,000 passports this year to Serbian citizens of Hungarian ethnicity. Hungarian Ambassador in Belgrade Oszkar Nikowitz says that a new law enables ethnic Hungarians living in other countries to apply for citizenship.
PM: Serbia will settle satellite debt in time
Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković says Serbia will pay before the deadline the satellite lease money it owes to an Israeli company.
There is money in the budget set aside for this purpose, Cvetković said in Belgrade on Tuesday.
Elderly couple found dead
An elderly couple was found dead in their family home in a Novi Sad neighborhood on Saturday, police in that town north of Belgrade have confirmed. They were identified as 80-year-old Rozalija P. and 77 year-old Jozef D.
Serbians welcome in New Year
Serbians have welcomed in the New Year with parties organized in city squares, but also in restaurants and clubs. In Belgrade, several thousand citizens braved the frosty weather to attend an open-doors concert given by a number of veteran local pop and rock stars.
Thaci: Report putting dialogue at risk
Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci told B92 that Council of Europe Rapporteur Dick Marty’s report linking him to human organ trade was not true.
He stressed that the report represented an attack on the upcoming dialogue between Belgrade and Priština.
IM: No concrete plan for government reshuffle
Interior Minister Ivica DaÄić has stated that there will be no government reshuffling without the concurrence of all coalition members.
He told Belgrade-based daily VeÄernje novosti that his Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) did not oppose the government reshuffle, noting, however, that the issue should be handled systematically.
“U.S. supports Serbia’s EU integrationâ€
Serbia’s Ambassador to U.S. Vladimir Petrović has stated that the U.S. supports Serbia’s EU integration process.
He added that this had already been stated by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Belgrade.
Dinkić “didn’t say what he said”
MlaÄ‘an Dinkić has denied that he promised Serbians they would each get EUR 1,000 in free shares so that Boris Tadić could be reelected the country’s president. The deputy PM and economy minister, and leader of G17 Plus party and the United Regions of Serbia coalition, recently spoke for Belgrade’s Danas newspaper, which then ran the headline, “I promised EUR 1,000 for the sake of Tadić”.
Parliament adopts state budget for 2011
Deputies of the Serbian parliament today in Belgrade adopted the draft state budget for 2011, prepared by the government. 128 MPs voted in favor of the proposal which envisages a budget deficit of RSD 120.5bn (EUR 1.14bn).
Bulgarian “ex-spy envoy” leaves Belgrade
Outgoing Bulgarian Ambassador to Belgrade Georgi Dimitrov stated that he has worked for the intelligence service, but that he was not a spy.
Dimitrov made the statement in an interview with the German Radio Deutsche Welle.
Minister blamed for problems in Sandžak
The Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP) has asked for Human and Minority Rights Minister Svetozar Čiplić to be sacked over the situation in the Raška District.
The southwestern region of Serbia, known also as Sandžak, is home to a large Bosniak (Muslim) minority, and LDP party official Ivan Adrić said in parliament in Belgrade on Tuesday that Čiplić is the generator of all the problems and conflicts there.
Minor delays at Belgrade airport
The traffic at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla International is for now being realized without major delays.
Two flights from Tunisia will be late for about ten minutes, Belgrade Airport PR Katarina Bjelanović told Tanjug on Tuesday.
