Norah Jones: Collaborations Collected On New Album

FOO FIGHTERS, TALIB KWELI, RYAN ADAMS & MORE TAP SINGER

On November 16th, Norah Jones will release …Featuring, an album of collaborations from the past decade. The 18 songs include duets with OutKast, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli and more.

“A lot of the people on this record are people I’ve worshiped since I was a kid, and some of them are younger and more my contemporaries,” says Jones. “Even though the musicians are so varied, the vibe of the songs makes sense when we put them all together.”

The tracks on …Featuring span her entire career, from one of her earliest recording sessions with guitarist Charlie Hunter in 2001 to her most recent performance, a song called “Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John” that she cut with Belle and Sebastian.

Jisan Valley Rock Festival | 07.29-08.01 | South Korea

Words & Images by: Tamara
Grayson

Jisan Valley Rock Festival:: 07.29.10-08.01.10 :: Jisan Valley Ski
Resort :: Icheon, South
Korea

Crash :: JVRF 2010

Having lived in New Orleans for the past seven years, I didn’t realize how spoiled I was
with live music until I moved
to South Korea this past March. Due to the location of the town that I’m teaching in,
I’ve only seen three live bands
in the past five months! So, I was desperately looking forward to this year’s Jisan
Valley Rock Festival
,
which takes place on the Jisan Valley Ski Resort grounds, just 40 minutes south of Seoul
in Icheon. Getting there, for
me, involved a three-and-a-half hour train ride, an hour subway ride, and a final hour-
long bus ride. Getting the
right information, in English, about where, when and how to get to the fest was slightly
frustrating. A far cry from
waking up in my own bed and walking a few blocks to Voodoo Music Experience or Jazz Fest
in New Orleans.

Jisan Valley Rock Fest lasts for three days, where you can camp or stay at one of the
local jimjibangs (saunas with
with sleeping quarters). This year’s line up boasted such international acts such as
Belle & Sebastian, Massive Attack, Corinne Bailey Rae,
Muse
and New
Orleans’ own
Mute Math.
Some local
acts I was looking forward to seeing were Toe (Japanese progressive rock),
Matzka (Taiwanese
roots reggae), and The Moonshiners (Korean rockabilly), along with Seoul
Electric Sound, Mate, Art of
Parties, Galaxy Express
and Taru.

A band that really blew my mind was a Korean thrash metal band called Crash. Little
did I know how
legendary they were. Getting their start in the early 90s, they were the first band here
to inspire moshing and stage
diving, which there was plenty of at this performance. Korean metal is alive and well.
The rock stages ended their
night at 9:30 pm but the entertainment didn’t stop there. It spilled over to the
Electronic Stage, where there were
DJs spinning until 4 am every morning. Another late night option was the fire poi
demonstration area accompanied
by a drum circle, or if you wanted to get down and dirty, another DJ tent had foam spewing
down on you until the
break of dawn.

Food, Drink & Vendors

The food and drink venders were open during all hours the festival operated. Options
included New York hot dogs,
a taco/burrito stand, hamburgers, toasted sandwiches, slow smoked meats, and fresh grilled
chicken boti and
samosas, along with traditional Korean foods like cold kimchee noodle soup, tteokbokki
(rice cakes, meat and
veggies in a red pepper sauce), dried squid, spicy ramon, and beondegi (boiled silk
worms). Yes, I have tried
beondegi, and though it may be high in protein I will never venture that way again.
There was only one beer
option, which was Miller Genuine Draft, though there were plenty of cocktail stands. The
most popular was Vinyl,
which is known for making their drinks in plastic bags. My personal favorite was the
fresh lime margaritas and mint
mojitos from Lazy Heaven. Limes are impossible to find here so to have such a delicacy
was worth every cent of the
5,000 won.

The Indian Village was surrounded by vendors and food stalls. There was an Orange amp
tent, a vintage dress store,
a CD tent, Calvin Klein underwear (really), and a Cosmopolitan Tent, where you could get
makeovers or do your own
touchups. There was even tent full of exercise bikes where they provided you with an iPod
to use.

A Few Things That Might Need Explaining

Korean couples dressing the same: If you’re in love, you match your clothing to
the T. Same T-shirt,
jeans, flip-flops and yes, even knickers. Most underwear stores have male/female models
wearing undies made
from the same material.

The Top 4 Questions Koreans Ask Foreigners: How old are you? Are you married?
What’s your blood
type? and What is your job? This still baffles me as much as it is entertaining.

Jisan Rock Fest is only in its second year, capturing an attendance of roughly 30,000.
For my first festival far, far
away from home it was delightful. Who wouldn’t want to be tucked away in the mountains
of Asia listening to some
of the best bands in the world for a weekend?

Tickets/Pricing: An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $199.00. After the $199.00 tickets sell
out, the
price increases to $225. A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8. Starting Friday, you’ll

nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The

get for the
$399 are forthcoming. You’ll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren’t

Sufjan Stevens | 10.05 | New York

Words by: Alex Nief | Images by: JC McIlwaine

Sufjan Stevens :: 10.05.09 :: Bowery Ballroom :: New York, NY

Sufjan Stevens | 10.05 | Bowery Ballroom

To set the scene: It was a lovely fall evening in New York. I was delirious with fever and the Bowery Ballroom basement was flooded with water emanating from the women’s bathroom.

When faced with the ominous tickles and aches of an oncoming illness there is only one thing to do: drink heavily. The simple fact of the matter is that you’re going to be bedridden for the remainder of the week so you might as well load up while you’re able (and if, in so doing, you manage to poison the oncoming virus, well, you win twice).

I grabbed a few drinks at the basement bar and took up residence on a comfortable, well-decorated bench. I was almost instantly unnerved at the sight of a pocket-sized notepad that had been placed on the table in front of me by a gentleman a few feet to my right. The top page read: “Sufjan Stevens 10/05 Bowery.” Wholly unwilling to be moved by this puerile gesture – clearly a fellow journalist attempting to intimidate me – I scrawled the same title atop my legal pad and slammed it down on the table, dwarfing his diminutive flip-pad. I gave him a sharp stare and tilted my head slightly as if to say, “If you like that, you should see my pen.” The amateur evacuated. I began to study the room, searching for non-white Sufjan Stevens fans (I gave up after twenty minutes).

Thirty minutes of observing the crowd revealed a strikingly homogeneous group. The Sufjan Stevens fan can be described as white, 25-35 years of age, well dressed, and in good shape from excessive bicycling. Most who adore Stevens do so with a cult-like passion. For the women in the audience, they would gladly leave their significant others for a night of passionate cuddling and crying with Stevens. The men would likely do the same.

Sufjan Stevens | 10.05 | Bowery Ballroom

When Sufjan Stevens took the stage the packed Bowery audience erupted for about twenty-five seconds before falling silently transfixed as he grabbed his banjo and, with horn accompaniment, eased us in with “The Mistress Witch from McClure (or The Mind That Knows Itself),” a depressing ditty which is part evocative memoir and part auto-philosophical. Almost every Sufjan Stevens song has a strange way of sounding like the recounting of a slow and painful death. The crowd, which had not so much as sneezed during the three-minute opener, again came to life with startling applause at its conclusion.

Stevens’ onstage persona calls up memories of a young Bob Dylan fielding questions from eager reporters upon his arrival in San Francisco in 1965. At one point early in his set, Stevens moved a piece of paper, leaned into the microphone and said, “Sweet.” The entire audience roared with laughter, and you could almost sense that there were people rushing to the bathrooms with their iPhones to call every bar in Williamsburg with the fantastic news.

Despite the too-clever post-hipster art worship crowd that seems to gather at his feet, Sufjan Stevens is a gifted songwriter with an uncommon skill: taking fairly simple musical compositions, applying dynamic arrangements for multiple instruments and ultimately creating cute little symphonies that are quite impressive. This, coupled with hauntingly evocative lyrics, makes Stevens the admired artist that he is and no amount of derisive commentary from a non-believer like myself can change that. But allow me to continue to try.

Sufjan Stevens | 10.05 | Bowery Ballroom

I would sooner climb a barbed wire fence naked than pay to see this circus displayed at a general admission, standing-room-only venue such as the Bowery. Make no mistake – the Bowery has one of the best layouts of any venue in NYC – but one must consider the performer (it was as counterintuitive as a seated thrash show). But it is a testament to his cult following that Sufjan Stevens holds the record for the most sellouts at the Bowery. He could probably sell out the quarantine unit at New York Presbyterian during an Ebola outbreak.

The highlight of the show was the introduction of a couple of new songs, which showed a clear departure from his previous work. The new numbers were robust and energetic, more “Flaming Lips” than his earlier “Belle & Sebastian on downers” sound. It was still Sufjan Stevens though: well-orchestrated cacophony, post-folk art rock.

About halfway through his set, I tried to make my way from the balcony to the stage. Since nobody dances during a Sufjan Stevens show – the audience huddles close together, forming a giant, mesmerized mass – this ended up taking about twenty minutes, and I arrived at stage right covered in corduroy burns.

As one fan moved toward the exit after the last encore he stopped by my barstool in the basement where I had been hiding for a short while with a bottle of Maker’s Mark, now beyond delirium. “How’d you like the show?” I asked. He shrugged and gave it an “Alright.” “Lots of people though,” I said.
