Tcl is known as a powerful yet succinct programming language. It originally derives from "Tool Command Language," but was then rendered as "Tcl" rather than "TCL." When spoken of, the language is pronounced as "tickle" or "tee-see-ell." Tcl is a scripting language created by John Ousterhout, founder and chairman of Electric Cloud, and a professor at Stanford University. Ousterhout created Tcl while he was a professor at University of California, Berkeley. Originally "born out of frustration" with programmers devising their own "poor quality" languages intended to be embedded into applications, according to the author, Tcl gained acceptance on its own. It is commonly used for rapid prototyping, scripted applications, GUIs and testing. Tcl is used on embedded systems platforms, both in its full form and in several other small-foot printed versions. Tcl is also used for CGI scripting and as the scripting language for the Eggdrop bot. Tcl is popularly used today in many automated test harnesses, both for software and hardware, and has a following in the Network Testing and SQA communities. The combination of Tcl and the Tk GUI toolkit is referred to as Tcl/Tk which is often pronounced "tickle tock." – …

David Berkeley: New Album Out in January
SOME KIND OF CURE OUT JANUARY 25 ON STRAW MAN;
TOUR STARTS JANUARY 25
IN NEW YORK
![]() David Berkeley |
David Berkeley will release
his new album Some Kind of Cure on Jan 25, 2011 via Straw Man and is hitting the road for a set
of CD release performances to share not only his new compositions, but also the stories behind them.
While living in a 35-person village in the mountains of Corsica, Berkeley wrote the collection of songs that would
make up Some Kind of Cure.
In concert, Berkeley wins crowds over with his low-key charisma and hilarious between song banter. His on stage
narratives rarely repeat themselves and are full of the same astutely observed details that
propel his songs. Berkeley has finally documented several of these tales and written an accompanying book of short
stories (one for
each song on the album) entitled 140 Goats and a Guitar, the Stories behind Some Kind of Cure. More info
on the
book can be found and pre-orders can be made here.

Natural Gas Innovation Wins Intel Entrepreneurial Award
Intel Foundation Awards $25,000 to Winning Team
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS:
- OsComp Systems of the Dominican Republic won the 2010 Intel+UC Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge, receiving a $25,000 award from the Intel Foundation.
- OsComp Systems invented a breakthrough technology with the potential to significantly reduce costs in the natural gas supply chain.
- Other top-placing teams were Magoosh, which created a personalized academic test preparation technology, and ADTELLIGENCE for its advertising targeting platform for the social web.
BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 18, 2010 – OsComp Systems of Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic has won the 6th Annual Intel+UC Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge, which seeks to support and promote entrepreneurship globally. The team of entrepreneurs won for inventing a breakthrough, patent-pending technology that could reduce operating and capital costs for natural gas compression by more than 30 percent. The Intel Foundation awarded the winning team the top prize of $25,000.
Second place was awarded to Magoosh of the University of California, Berkeley, for its personalized academic test preparation technology that allows students to learn through short-form videos that deliver content according to each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Third place went to ADTELLIGENCE of the University of Mannheim in Germany for its advertising targeting platform for the social web, which enables advertisers to precisely target their campaigns and increase online shop revenues using real data from social network users or single sign-on services such as Facebook, Connect and Open Social.
“For more than four decades Intel has been a leader in innovation,” said Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “From this, we’ve found that some of the best ideas are still out there, in the minds of today’s students. By helping these ideas grow, we are fostering students, such as those present at this competition, to have a positive impact on society, which will in turn help strengthen the future global economy.”
The competition, held at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, drew 27 teams from 19 countries. Founded in 2005, the Intel+UC Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge is a joint project of the Intel Foundation and the UC Berkeley Lester Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation that is designed to motivate young entrepreneurs to develop innovative technologies that solve real world challenges, build viable business models, and move that technology out of university labs and into the market.
This year, the finalist teams presented business plans that reflect groundbreaking work in such fields as technology, environment, healthcare and education. These plans include solutions for alternative energy, waste management, early detection of breast cancer, food-borne diseases, online education and human computer interaction technology. Representatives of more than 20 leading venture capital firms from the San Francisco Bay Area served as judges of the competition and provided valuable feedback to the teams.
In addition to today’s awards ceremony, Intel launched a People’s Choice Awards Contest for the public to vote for their favorite team of young entrepreneurs who participated in this week’s competition. Visit www.inspiredbyeducation.com/vote to learn more and vote.

Hot Rize: Free Download of First New Music in 20 Years
U.S. TOUR BEGINS OCTOBER 28
![]() Hot Rize |
Hot Rize has reunited for
their first US tour in over a decade, including recent high-profile performances at Bonnaroo and Telluride. The band
has recorded new music for the first time in 20 years, including “Diamond Joe” and a rearrangement of “Wichita
Lineman,” both available for free through HotRize.com. Click
here to download
“Diamond Joe”.
“The world is ready for a revisit from Hot Rize,” says banjo player Pete Wernick, who launched the band in
1978 with Tim O’Brien (mandolin, fiddle, lead vocals) and Nick Forster (electric bass, vocals) and
guitarist Charles Sawtelle. “In the rare times we’ve reunited for one-off performances, we’ve seen a level
of enthusiasm that’s been hard to ignore.” Following the untimely passing of Sawtelle in 1999, the quartet
reorganized in 2002 with Grammy winner and five-time IBMA Guitarist of the Year, Bryan Sutton. “I’m so
happy to be playing with Hot Rize. I’ve been a fan since seeing them as a kid when they came through North
Carolina,” adds Sutton. “It’s a joy to share the music.”
“A first, the four of us set out to play a summer’s worth of gigs – that was all we had committed to,” says Forster.
“But we kept going, playing everywhere we could. We grew up together and created music we’re really proud of –
over 100 recorded songs, mostly original or new arrangements of traditional music. Now – 32 years later – we’ve all
evolved as musicians, but we still have the Hot Rize sound; something only the four of us can make, something
Bryan is now a part of.”

Intel Labs: Building Better Robot Butlers, Digital Homes, Cloud Systems
PITTSBURGH Over the past nine years, scientists from Intel Labs have been collaborating with the faculty and students of Carnegie Mellon University here to work on research projects at the cutting edge of the tech industry. Like similar Intel Labs at Berkeley, Calif., and Seattle, the Intel Labs Pittsburgh is operated under the Open Collaborative Research model designed by Intel as a way to enable its researchers to work closely with CMU on joint projects and avoid disputes over IP rights. Intel Labs recently hosted an open house at its Pittsburgh location to give the public a look at the various research projects that are underway at the facility at the Collaborative Innovation Center. Those projects run the gamut, from robots and compute clusters to the digital homes of the future, computational technology for agriculture, algorithms for improved digital photography to a data analytic platform called "dicer," and all fall under the umbrella categories of cloud computing and embedded intelligent systems. – …

Age a Big Factor in Technology Earnings
Research from the University of California at Berkeley shows age is a factor in earnings: As you get older in your technology job, your rate of earning becomes more stagnant. So what’s a technologist to do? Climb the ladder or shift career paths as you go along. Programmers take heed. – The
older you get in technology, the harder it is to maintain a salary that grows,
discovered economists Clair Brown and Dr. Greg Linden of the University of
California, Berkeley, who have been studying the subject in research about
offshoring and the semiconductor industry since 2006. These aca…
