The company’s strategy includes a team of 5,000 consultants and a network of analytics solution centers, and it is backed by an overall investment of more than $11 billion in acquisitions in the last five years. This slide show shows 20 ways IBM is pushing the analytics envelope, including several industry-specific and customer examples. – …

Watch The Superbowl Game Online – Do This So You Don’t Miss The Big Game Posted By : Paddy Chang

Big ambitions

This from a programme in the UK called Dragons Den, which although I’ve hardly seen, colleagues assure me is a runaway success.

Two chaps – Gary and Faizal – presented their tiny car wheeze to the Dragons – who appear to have come down particularly harshly on the duo maintaining there’s no specific business plan.

Looking at the cars, I can’t imagine anyone driving them without frankly, attracting incredulous looks from passers-by or hoots of derision.

They remind me of Sir Clive Sinclair’s C5 idea in the 1980s that attracted some of the worst press in years.

Apparently Gary and Faizal bought Peel Engineering, which makes the world’s smallest working car.

Good luck with the idea lads, but do you genuinely think there will be a massive uptake for the midget motor?

JamBase Questionnaire: Big Light

Welcome back to JamBase’s friendly inquisition of the bright lights of the music world.
Last time we heard from Big Head Todd.

To look at Big
Light
‘s Fred Torphy on the street you might not see what a natural born rocker
he is. But, stick him beneath hot stage lights with an electric guitar and he looks just
too right. Surround him with three equally primed-for-launch guys overflowing with talent
- Bradley Bifulco (drums), Jeremy Korpas (guitar) and Steve Adams
(bass) – and you’ve got a classic four-piece that off-handedly reminds one what a joyful,
enriching thing rock ‘n’ roll can be.

And while their off-the-books tangents work great – they are jam band scholars – it’s the
bare bones and killer smile inside their songwriting that snags you. It also doesn’t hurt
that they stoke memories of Wilco, Big Star and Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians.
Perhaps more than anything else, one picks up on a hunger in this group often missing from
today’s too-cool-for-school bands. Big Light positively salivates at the chance to wreck
and ride rock for all it’s worth. And they ain’t half bad at pretty stuff, too. 2010 has
been a banner year for this young San Francisco-based band, with regular touring on both
coasts, a flurry of new composing and the release of their bang-up debut album, Animals
In Bloom
(JamBase review). Yet, this all feels
like the tip of the iceberg with Big Light, whose potential may well surpass even their
wide, eager eyes ability to envision just yet. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Fred had to say to our inquiries.

Fred Torphy – Big Light by Dave Vann

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…

home-cooked Italian food I’ve ever had. Thank you, Dianne & Tom Korpas.

Burlington, VT.

before winging it back east later in the month for a string of shows in Boston, NYC,

MoogFest Adds Big Boi, Jonsi, Caribou

NEW ASHEVILLE FEST ADDS THREE MORE ACTS

Big Boi

The full lineup announcement for MoogFest 2010, a three-day festival celebrating the innovative vision of sonic pioneer Robert Moog to be held in Asheville, NC during Halloween weekend, October 29-31, has been postponed to August 10th, with tickets now going on sale three days later, Friday, August 13. But festival producers AC Entertainment have announced that Big Boi, Jonsi and Caribou are among the many acts joining Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, and MGMT on the bill for the weekend festival.

“MoogFest 2010 is going to be an extraordinary experience,” says Ashley Capps, AC Entertainment’s founder. “We’ve had a tremendous response already – and from that, some unique opportunities have emerged. We still need a little more time to put it all together, so we thought it best to wait so that we can share with everyone the full scope of the event before actually putting tickets on sale. It’s worth the wait. It really is going to be a special weekend.”

K. Albanians hail ICJ decision as big victory

The Kosovo Albanian authorities in Priština today welcomed the ICJ ruling with champagne, and said it was their big victory.
The top UN court said in its advisory opinion that the ethnic Albanian unilateral declaration made in early 2008, considered to be an illegal attempt of secession by Belgrade, was not breaching international law, as international law “has no active provision that limits independence declarations”.

JamBase Questionnaire: Big Head Todd

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Nathan Moore.

“Open me up and turn my life around/ Let the sun shine in and shook me off the ground/ Fallen apart, somehow you kept it together/ Kept me from drifting into stormy weather.”

Thus begins the new album from Big Head Todd and the Monsters entitled Rocksteady (released July 20). It’s another pretty seamless mix of adult pop, blues riffs and smooth grooves from the long-lived Colorado band, which has survived and even thrived as a unit well past their string of 90s hits. With a lineup that’s remained steady while their peers played musical compatriots, Todd Park Mohr (vocals, guitar), Rob Squires (bass, vocals), Brian Nevin (drums, vocals) and Jeremy Lawton (keyboards, steel guitars, vocals) exhibit an overlapping, communicative energy on Rocksteady, which frequently explores the things that build up and shake our faith, offering hope and harmony at a time when both are in short supply. It’s the work of pros that sound like they’re enjoying making music now as much as ever. And they spank Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning,” too, so one’s blues get a workout as well, not to mention a sauntering, wistful cover of the Stones’ “Beast of Burden.” (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Todd Park Mohr had to say to our inquiries.

Todd Park Mohr by David Boothroy

Nicknames: “Big Head” or simply “Big”

Instrument of choice: Telecaster guitar

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Musicians listening to each other, and an appreciative audience listening to musicians

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
The Grease soundtrack, followed by Aretha Franklin’s Live at the Fillmore West

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Radiohead OK Computer

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
A doctor or any kind of athlete

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
A mid-sized theater with good sound, and an audience that doesn’t have much knowledge of the band so they need to be won over.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
That I really prefer to be left alone and to not be known at all…but oh well, I am an entertainer after all.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Wind and water running through a canyon

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Well, as fantastic as Elton John’s Captain Fantastic of course!

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Grits and shrimp in Oxford, Mississippi

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Colorado at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Sleeping at all times of the day and night

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
Rolling Stones for me because of the roughshod blues influence of Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf! The Beatles are more well, Chubby Checker.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
A large herd of elk, maybe 50 head, running right through the middle of the road I was driving on.

Big Star’s Andy Hummel R.I.P.

BIG STAR BASSIST PASSES AWAY

Andy Hummel, a co-founder of ultra influential Big Star, has died of cancer at age 59. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Hummel’s family and friends, and JamBase offers up our heartfelt thanks for Andy’s contribution to rock ‘n’ roll. Hummel’s death falls just four months after Alex Chilton‘s sudden passing, leaving drummer Jody Stephens as the last living member of the original Big Star lineup.

We offer up this clip of Big Star in their youthful prime in remembrance and celebration of Andy Hummel and the music he helped create.

Big High: Live Clips, Debut with Screaming Tree’s Barrett Martin

SEATTLE’S GOT ANOTHER GREAT ROCK BAND

After being blown away by Big High at last year’s Summer Meltdown (see rave here), our expectations were high for the band’s debut record and their newly minted self-titled album more than lives up to anything we were thinking!

Grounded in all the stuff that makes classic rock classic, yet tempered with an immediacy and intelligence that feels very modern, Big High is the kind of album one plays on repeat and keeps finding new things to like over & over. Singer Mesa belts it out like a controlled blast furnace, melding the grit of Clutch’s Neil Fallon with the lover man glide of vintage Robert Plant – seriously, he’s that good. The band is a lean yet expansive combination of guitarist Ari Joshua, bassist Sandy and drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, Tuatara and Mad Season fame. The album also features longtime Seattle-ite Peter Buck (R.E.M.) as guest guitarist on four stellar tracks.

Big High embarks on their first West Coast tour in August (dates below) and here’s a couple recent clips of them in action.

Big High West Coast Dates

August 21st – Hempfest Mainstage, Seattle, WA
August 26th – Dante’s, Portland, OR
