GM’s concept the envy of Shanghai

GM’s invitation to attend its Shanghai Expo event at the Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s City Hall fiefdom was certainly enlivened by a Chinese theme – including a rather tasty buffet.

The automaker was presenting its vision of the future – in the guise of the Jiao, Miao and Xiao – not a firm of Chinese accountants – but a trio of Electric Networked Vehicles or EN-Vs as GM likes to call them.

And GM’s vision of that future is really something as director of advanced technology vehicle concepts Christopher Borroni-Bird outlined.

Borroni-Bird posed a fascinating series of ‘what-ifs’ including remote parking – you simply tell your mobile phone to park the car and away it goes. Or you could sit in your car and do something else entirely – such as have a video conversation while the car steers itself.

The presentation concluded with an animation of a Chinese city – where tiny cars zoomed around harmlessly avoiding each other at what looked like very close proximity.

Borroni-Bird’s CV is rather impressive too. A long roll-call of qualifications includes – among others – a first class degree and MA in natural sciences from Cambridge, a Ph. D in surface science and a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Solid State Physics.

Opel/Vauxhall’s Advanced Design department also had Sergio Loureiro da Silva present his thoughts, which could see the cars wrapped in whatever fabric or customisation you felt like.

And what better place to talk about design than on the top floor of City Hall’s fantastic armadillo-like building and right opposite London’s iconic Tower Bridge?

Newport Folk Fest: Helm, Yim, Bird, Avetts

George Wein’s NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL RETURNS TO ITS SEASIDE HOME JULY 30 – AUGUST 1

Newport Folk Fest 2009 by Brueckner

The spirit of an open-hearted, old-fashioned family reunion is being summoned to life for this year’s 51st edition of George Wein’s Newport Folk Festival®, which begins July 30 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport Casino and continues July 31 and August 1 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.

Tickets go on sale worldwide on Friday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at www.newportfolkfest.net.

George Wein’s New Festival Productions continues to build on the festival’s historic past by featuring emerging young artists alongside some of folk music’s most venerable names. This year’s festival features Levon Helm‘s Ramble on the Road, John Prine, Steve Martin & Steep Canyon Rangers, Yim Yames (of My Morning Jacket), The Swell Season, Andrew Bird, The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile, Doc Watson & David Holt, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Calexico, Blitzen Trapper, Richie Havens, Sam Bush, The Low Anthem, Tim O’Brien, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Tao Seeger Band, AA Bondy, Chris Thile’s Punch Brothers, Dawes, Nneka, Horse Feathers, Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three , Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Sarah Jarosz, Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons, O’Death and Liz Longley. More artists will be announced at a later date.

Many of these musicians have performed and recorded together or crossed paths along the musical highway and they see this storied festival as being so steeped in cultural and historic importance that they liken it to “coming home” to the very roots of the folk-music tradition.

Wein has, since 1959, found Newport a scenic and hospitable venue for presenting the very best of this country’s blues, roots, gospel, country, bluegrass, Cajun and traditional folk music. Last year’s 50th anniversary edition paid tribute to the great performers who wrote the proud history of this festival, notably co-founder Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Arlo Guthrie and Mavis Staples.

“Newport is like a second home to me and I always look forward to the next visit,” said Wein. “After celebrating the 50th anniversary with Pete and 17,000 fans, I can’t wait to see the magic unfold over the three days.”

“There is something so perfect about being in Newport near the water and that old stone fort – all gathered in to sing with family and friends – that keeps me wanting to come back year after year,” said Yim Yames. “It’s like the walls of the fort are arms, and I feel secure when I am near them, protected by the spirits there – past, present, and future. And, I like to hear our voices bouncing off those old stone walls as my eye drifts to the sailboats on the seashore and the people just smiling and taking it all in.”

All tickets for George Wein’s Newport Folk Festival go on sale Friday, March 26, at 10:00 a.m. online, by phone and by mail. General admission tickets (single-day passes only) also can be purchased in person at the Newport Visitor Information Center, located at 23 America’s Cup Avenue.

Rejecting the Early Bird Special: Older Workers Dis Retirement

The economy, health care and Social Security are all factors at play in older workers’ decisions to keep working. However, it’s not all about money and health. Older workers are also concerned about malaise and usefulness while some simply love their workplace environment.
– Workers 60 and over have
overwhelmingly put retirement on the back burner, says a new study from CareerBuilder.
Concerns and fear from a year ago are still on the minds of those near typical
retirement age.
Wall Street investment and
the stock market grew in the last year, but that does not mea…

This week the Economist offered a spirited defense of the profession for which it is named.

Monday Melody

WE TAKE THE SONG FROM EVERY BIRD AND MAKE ‘EM SING IT JUST FOR YOU

Gil Scott-Heron

While often painted as a dour dude, Gil Scott-Heron conjured some of the most genuinely hopeful music to emerge from the 1970s. “I Think I’ll Call It Morning” from 1971′s Pieces of a Man, his landmark masterpiece with composing partner/creative foil Brian Jackson which contains “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” stands shoulder-to-shoulder with anything Stevie or Marvin dished up in the era. When hope emerges in the work of Jackson and Scott-Heron it’s had to fight its way through a lot of crap and emerges a bit worse for wear but ready for the hard road that still lies ahead. We offer this Monday wakeup in the hopes that it helps fuel a smile today and provide a melody for your subconscious this week.

And check out JamBase’s exclusive interview with Brian Jackson from 2005!
