Citroen goes local with Aircross in Brazil

For all the talk of convergence towards the ‘global consumer’ it is interesting to note the differences that persist. And you can see that in the auto industry where differing vehicle operating environments (things like taxes, costs of fuel, prevailing road conditions, distances travelled) and cultural nuances across the world mean that car companies still tweak ‘standard’ global products for local needs or indeed offer completely different vehicles in some markets.

An example of ‘glocalisation’ – a global product strategy tweaked for local market needs – emerged in Brazil last week. Citroen has developed a local version of its C3 Picasso that gives the car an off-road flavour. Our local correspondent down there says that this sort of compact SUV treatment has become popular in Brazil. If Citroen can make a bigger margin on such a car by making some largely cosmetic changes, then it’s clearly a smart move.

It’s not a serious mud-plugger, but so what? How many Land Rovers actually get their complicated off-road engineering and undoubted capability seriously tested? Some do, but many don’t. Same goes for that gleaming Ferrari I passed yesterday in the roadworks tootling along at 50mph, just like everyone else. The driver is getting something more than simply the vehicle’s high performance capabilities.

The key thing is this: is the customer happy? Whether the customer is in Beijing, Birmingham or Brazil, that’s what the car company has to set out to achieve on the back of a business model that turns a profit. And to do that local knowledge is as important as ever.

We may well live in a global village that seems to be getting smaller, with ease and efficiency of communication improving all the time, but big differences in market wants persist. Getting the right mix of standard component sets and modules that leverage global volume while at the same time offering distinct products for particular market needs is still the big challenge.

American Aquarium & Sons of Bill Spring Tour

AMERICAN AQUARIUM AND SONS OF BILL “LIFE IN SHAMBLES” SPRING TOUR
2010

American Aquarium

As complicated as life in 2010 may have become, it’s some comfort to know there are still simple guys out there
playing simple music. Simple guys that can go out any night of the week and put together a rock and roll show we
can all believe in. It was as simple as James Wilson (Sons of Bill) making contact with
BJ Barham (American
Aquarium
) at the end of 2009 to propose a tour for their bands that would help further bond a growing
community of music fans around their roots/Americana/alt-country songwriting and performances. The hope is
that this will not just be another lineup at the bar, but rather a chance to celebrate a new school of bands that are
tending the vibrant traditions of rock and country music and the sense of community they can foster, especially in
hard times. As a tongue-in-cheek testament to the times, the boys in the bands thought it appropriate to call this
tour “Life in Shambles.”

The tour kicks off in Raleigh, NC on May 1 to celebrate the release of American Aquarium’s new record,
Small Town Hymns (Last Chance Records). The entourage will then continue along a three week run that covers the East Coast with each band taking the closing slot on different nights. There will certainly
be cold beers consumed, collaborations and conspiracies, and some kick ass rock and roll played at high volumes.

American Aquarium & Sons of Bill “Life in Shambles” Spring Tour 2010:

05/01/10 Sat The Pour House Music Hall Raleigh, NC

05/02/10 Sun New Brookland Tavern West Columbia, SC

Widespread Panic Archive: July 2001 Wilmington Release

Widespread Panic Archive: July 2001 Kahuna Summer Stage Wilmington, Delaware

Panic

Widespread Panic has just released “The Big Kahuna.” For the third volume of the band’s live Porch Songs archive they stick with summer 2001. Sandwiched between three night runs at the Beacon Theater in New York City and Oak Mountain in Birmingham, the July 22 show at Kahuna Summer Stage in Wilmington, Delaware wasn’t necessarily set to be anything spectacular. But once again, that seemed to be the right recipe as this night was going to be anything but normal.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Tour/Album

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Premiere Video and Announce U.S. Tour
in Support of New Album, Kollaps Tradixionales

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) returns with its sixth full-length recording and first since the band’s lineup change in summer 2008. Having shed three members and recruiting a new drummer, the group officially dropped the “Tra-La-La Band” from its name, played a debut performance as a newly minted quintet at All
Tomorrow’s Parties in upstate NY, and embarked on an extensive European tour through the Fall of 2008. As Kollaps Tradixionales ably demonstrates, the band has lost none of its raw and frazzled anthemic power and continues to forge bold new ground in its search for a unique hybrid of punk, blues, psych, folk and modern orchestral idioms.

Kollaps Tradixionales is available on standard CD (in a custom gatefold paperboard jacket) and limited-edition deluxe CD (which is packaged together with a 6″x9″ 16-page perfect-bound art book and poster). The album also comes in a deluxe first pressing on double 10″ vinyl, with the art book, a CD copy, and two different posters
inside. The album is also available digitally. You can purchase the album here.

Kollaps Tradixionales Track List:
1. There Is A Light
2. I Built Myself A Metal Bird
3. I Fed My Metal Bird The Wings Of Other Metal Birds

The Ravenna Colt: Debut Album Ex-MMJ Guitarists New Band

The Ravenna Colt Releases Slight Spell

The Ravenna Colt

After conceiving the project over a decade ago, former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid is finally releasing the dreamlike, southern-flavored debut effort by The Ravenna Colt. The album, titled, Slight Spell, is now available through Removador Recordings and Solutions, the label Quaid recently co-founded with MMJ frontman Jim James.

After six years as a part of MMJ, Louisville, KY native Quaid parted amicably with the band in 2004 and headed off to California. Eventually Quaid headed back east and reacquainting himself with his roots. Fittingly, the music he has written as The Ravenna Colt reflects his style in Americana with a hint of cosmic breeze that emanates from California.

The Ravenna Colt currently includes Phil Carlson, J. Brent Stuart and Daniel T. Mohler as members, but the group has always been a shape-shifting entity with the only constant force being Quaid at the helm. This collective-like quality translates to the music as well, which has beautifully amorphous feel. The songs on Slight Spell have definitive cores, but ones that seem capable of adapting to various musicians and arrangements. Quaid has the soul of a troubadour. One can picture him with nothing but an acoustic guitar strapped to his back, traveling from town to town to share his music and his adventures.

The Dead Weather: Spring Dates

THE DEAD WEATHER ANNOUNCE SPRING U.S. TOUR DATES

The Dead Weather has announced a 13-city Spring jaunt that includes appearances at Coachella and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Tickets are available now for subscribers to The Vault, Third Man Records’ groundbreaking online subscription service, and available to the general public starting Friday, February 5.

The dirge rock four-piece, consisting of celebrated musicians Dean Fertita (Queens of The Stone Age), “Little” Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Alison Mosshart (The Kills) and Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), have traveled the world over since their debut Horehound was released in the summer of 2009 – leaving in their wake storms of fans enthralled by the bluesy rock quartet’s gritty rhythm and incessant energy.
