Noble Group’s Leiman seeks to grow oilseeds business

Noble Group, the commodity supplier backed by China Investment Corp., is seeking to expand its grain and oilseeds business to take advantage of rising global food demand, Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Leiman said.

“We want to grow in the Black Sea in terms of the grains and oilseeds business,” Leiman said in an interview yesterday in Singapore. “That’s an area that we’re looking at. We want to continue to grow in China. We already have a big pipeline of projects.”

PABSEC assembly session in Belgrade

Incompetent visionaries

Twenty years after declaring independence, Lithuania is discovering the value of pragmatism

LITHUANIA thinks big. In the days of the late lamented Grand Duchy, it stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea. That was in the 12th century. But its ability to grasp the big picture remains. This is why, on March 11th 1990, the newly elected Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic voted unilaterally to restore the country’s pre-war independence, with immediate effect.

The end of history, revisited

The ex-communist states of eastern Europe are leaving their pasts behind

WHERE would they be without their past, the ex-captive nations? (Or “ex-communist countries”, “former Soviet satellite states”, “the old Eastern block”: so much history even in the category). The region between the Baltic and the Black Sea is so shaped by history that at first sight the question seems absurd. Trianon, Yalta, Molotov-Ribbentrop, Munich—the gloomy echoes of past betrayals and atrocities are inescapable.

Earl Greyhound: New Album

EARL GREYHOUND TO RELEASE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE APRIL 13

Earl Greyhound

Brooklyn trio Earl Greyhound will release their second full length album, Suspicious Package, a blistering rock inferno, on April 13. Suspicious Package was recorded at Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica, CA under the nimble and keen production auspices of Dave Schiffman (Mars Volta, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down).

The band formed in 2002 with the collaboration of songwriters Matt Whyte and Kamara Thomas, who began performing regularly as a duo in New York City. All the while, they were crafting the unique sound and songs that would form the foundation for a colossal rock band. Their influences swept from the strident English three-and four-pieces of the 70′s, to the dark pop and heavy grunge grooves of the 90′s, to the transcendental, noisy acid sounds of modern rock.

In 2005, Earl Greyhound recorded their first album, Soft Targets, but also hit their first snag when drummer Chris Bear left to pursue his fortunes with the band Grizzly Bear. Reluctant to release the album without a permanent drummer, Matt and Kamara vowed to play relentlessly until their dream drummer found them.

Later, guitar player Kirk Douglass (The Roots) witnessed a show and brought his friend and Gold Crowns band mate Ricc Sheridan to the next few gigs. Says Ricc, “I awoke from a dream one night, and I knew this was my band.” A few weeks later, a rockneck-inducing jam confirmed that the band had found its soul mate, and they hit the ground running. Soft Targets and Earl Greyhound’s wrecking ball of a live show earned them oodles of fans and critical acclaim from The New Yorker, SPIN, Rolling Stone, JamBase, Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork, among others.

The next three years were spent touring the U.S., Canada and Japan as well as opening for Gov’t Mule, Chris Cornell and Saul Williams.

Suspicious Package marks a turning point in the band’s maturation since the benefit of Sheridan’s full creative collaboration. Listeners will notice a marked expansion into the higher reaches of the sonic territories.

Georgia expects Russia to understand NATO transit

Georgia confirmed on Monday its offer of military cargo transit for NATO troops in Afghanistan and expressed hope that Russia would not object to this move. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili told Associated Press last Friday that Georgia had offered its Black Sea ports to NATO military supply ships and its airports as refueling points for NATO cargo planes en route to Afghanistan.

Big freeze hits eastern Europe

It is eastern Europe’s turn to feel the icy blast of winter. Drifting snow and high winds have made driving in Romania treacherous. Five people have died since Friday, with temperatures plunging as low as minus 25, and even sea traffic is affected, with Romania’s Black Sea ports closed.

Russian navy joins hunt for ship

Arctic Sea

Russia’s navy has been deployed to find a ship reportedly hijacked three weeks ago in the Baltic Sea.

Up to five vessels – reported to include nuclear submarines – will be involved in the search for the Maltese-flagged Arctic Sea, the navy confirmed.

It has a 15-strong Russian crew and was reportedly taking timber worth $1.5m (£900,000) from Finland to Algeria when it was boarded by gunmen on 24 July.

The Arctic Sea was last sighted off the north coast of France on 30 July.

British authorities say the 4,000-tonne vessel may have been spotted subsequently by a Portuguese coastal patrol aircraft, but its current location remains unknown.

Massive search

"All Russian navy ships in the Atlantic have been sent to join the search for the Arctic Sea," Russia’s naval commander, Adm Vladimir Vysotsky, was quoted as saying by Moscow’s Itar-Tass news agency.

"There didn’t seem anything suspicious when contact was made. It could well be that a crew member had a gun put to his head"

Mark Clark
Maritime and Coastguard Agency

"All the information-intelligence systems of our armed forces, including the space-borne systems, the system of identification of sea vessels and others, have been calibrated to look for the missing ship," he said.

Operations will be centred on the patrol ship Ladny, a guided missile frigate which is part of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

UK authorities, which made contact with the Arctic Sea before it entered the busy shipping waters of the English channel, described the situation as "bizarre".

"Who would think that a hijacked ship could pass through one of the most policed and concentrated waters in the world" said Mark Clark of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

"There didn’t seem anything suspicious when contact was made," he added. "It could well be that a crew member had a gun put to his head by a hijacker when contact was made, but who knows"

The Finnish shipping line operating the ship reportedly said it was boarded by up to 10 armed men claiming to be anti-drugs police as it sailed through the Baltic Sea on 24 July.

But the intruders are reported to have left the vessel 12 hours later on an inflatable boat, and it is unclear who is in current command of the ship.

Commercial dispute

The Arctic Sea had been scheduled to dock in the Algerian port of Bejaia on 4 August.

While world leaders have become increasingly concerned about pirates operating off the coast of Somalia, maritime experts suggest the case of the Arctic Sea reflects a different kind of piracy.

Nick Davis, who runs the private security firm Anti-Piracy Maritime Security Solutions, told the BBC’s Today programme the relatively low value of the cargo suggested the ship’s seizure may be the result of a "commercial dispute" in which one party had decided to "take matters into their own hands".

But he added: "Piracy is piracy – if someone’s wanting to take that vessel, and they’re not authorised, and they use a speedboat to go and get it, then it’s no different to what the Somalis do."

Relatives of the Arctic Sea’s 15 crew members – all of whom are said to come from the northern Russian port city of Arkhangelsk – have so far been unwilling to speak to the media.
