Final Bloody Sunday march?

It was supposed to be the final march to mark Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland, but not everyone agrees, euronews reports.
Thousands took part on Sunday, to remember the 14 people killed by British troops in 1972.

At last night’s MTV Europe Awards, Jay-Z joined U2 for a new look at the classic “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” Performed at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was an historic event on several levels. Watch the vid here:

The latest bombings in Iraq suggest that Sunni extremists are trying, afresh, to whip up war

“WHEN the enemy advances, withdraw; when he stops, harass; when he tires, strike; when he retreats, pursue,” suggested Chairman Mao during the Chinese civil war that eventually won him power. Iraqi insurgents are following his advice. During the American “surge” two years ago they retreated. After the passing of its peak they renewed their attacks. And barely a month after Iraqi troops took control of the main towns from the slowly departing Americans, blood is again gushing down boulevards.

Over 100 civilians were killed and hundreds wounded in a four-day period this week. Two lorries packed with explosives levelled most of a settlement on the edge of Mosul in northern Iraq. Residents were sleeping on rooftops to escape the summer heat when their houses collapsed beneath them. In Baghdad bombers aimed for day labourers and pilgrims, making this the worst spasm of violence in recent memory. The attacks have been centred on the north and the capital and are proving to be increasingly sophisticated. The lorry bombings are reminiscent of spectacular attacks staged during the early part of the American occupation. …

Hotels are bombed in Jakarta as terrorism returns to haunt Indonesia

JUST as Indonesia was congratulating itself on a largely peaceful presidential election, murderous attacks in the capital have come as a jolt. At least nine people were killed and dozens were injured in early-morning explosions on Friday July 17th at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in the heart of Jakarta’s business district. Another bomb at the Marriott failed to explode. Elsewhere a car-bomb exploded on a toll-road in the north of the city killing two more people.

The newly re-elected president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has blamed unknown terrorist groups. None has claimed responsibility. But in a country with more Muslims than any other—some 90% of its 240m population—and a history of terrorist violence, suspicion will inevitably fall on Islamist fanatics. In particular, the focus will be on Jemaah Islamiah (JI), an extremist Islamist group affiliated to al-Qaeda, that has carried out similar outrages in the past, most notably in Bali in 2002, when 202 people from 21 countries were killed. …
