House of Blues Sunset Strip May Shut Down

HOB TO MAKE ROOM FOR NEW HOUSING COMPLEX

The West Hollywood City Council has voted 4-1 in favor of a project that may replace The House of Blues on the
Sunset Strip. The Gauntlet reports that developers
would like to use that chunk of land for a 149 room hotel and a new housing complex.

It has yet to be determined whether or not the House of Blues would be demolished entirely, or incorporated into
the
new complex. Liz Morentin, a spokesperson for Live Nation, the operator of the House of Blues, said: “We have a
lease,
which with renewal rights, goes through 2025, and we plan on continuing our operations at the venue.”

In a statement on ABC News, West Hollywood Deputy City Manager Anne McIntosh discussed the Live Nation lease
agreement: “The city recognizes
that the developer and club operator have a private contractual agreement and this was considered in the approvals
given last night,” said West Hollywood Deputy City Manager Anne McIntosh in a statement.

The House of Blues has been in operation on the Sunset Strip since 1994.

Rory Gallagher: New DVD & CD Releases

OUT SEPTEMBER 14 ON EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT

Irish guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher ignited a legacy that many rock and blues musicians worship and
emulate to this day. On September 14, Eagle Rock Entertainment will issue two releases paying tribune to this rock
icon – Ghost Blues 2DVD set and The Beat Club Sessions CD.

The 2 DVD set, running 179 minutes in total, is the complete Rory Gallagher experience, both revealing his
background as a musical artist and tapping into his dominating stage presence. Ghost Blues, the first disc in
the set, is the first complete and fully authorized documentary of Rory Gallagher’s life and career. The documentary
threads together live footage, archive interviews with Rory, and contributions from his many friends and admirers,
including his brother Donal, Bob Geldof, The Edge (U2), Cameron Crowe, Slash, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Bill
Wyman (The Rolling Stones)
, and his former band members Ted McKenna and Gerry
McAvoy
, as well as many others.

After traversing Rory’s roots, The Beat Club Sessions portion digs into his prowess as a trailblazing electric blues-rock performer. These live recordings are drawn from three different appearances on German TV’s Beat Club program in the early seventies. The video footage is captured on disc 2 of the DVD package and via select audio on the CD release. With over 90 minutes of previously unreleased material, these performances capture Gallagher in his element, playing classic songs from his first two solo albums that would remain staples throughout his career.

Grant Park on Chicago’s lakefront was home to the 27th Annual Chicago Blues Festival from June 11 – 13 of this year, celebrating 100 years of the late Chester Burnett, aka Howlin’ Wolf. The Wolf would have turned 100 on June 10 and the theme of this years festival was to celebrate the life and music of the blues legend. Friday’s theme was Smokestack Lightning and featured five stages of blues with artists like Jimmy Dawkins, Grady Champion and others, along with harmonica workshops and discussions with former Wolf bandmates and friends.

The main stage got underway at 5 pm and featured old Howlin Wolf alumni Eddie Shaw, Jody Williams, Sam Lay, Henry Gray, Abb Locke, Corky Siegel, and Hubert Sumlin. The set featured instrumental jams and boogies along with Wolf classics like “300 Pounds Of Joy,” “Built For Comfort,” “Shake For Me,” and a set closing “Howlin’ For My Darlin’.” Eddie Shaw did most of the singing while also playing sax.

Next on the main stage was The Otis
Taylor Band
, which features a violin, electric mandolin, and banjo at times along with traditional electric blues instrumentation. Highlights included “Mannish Boy” and “Hey Joe” with great violin playing by Anne Harris. The Otis Taylor Band will appeal to more than just a blues audience.

Next up was The James Cotton Band with Matt “Guitar” Murphy. The two blues legends sat most of the set while playing songs like “Rocket 88,” “That’s All Right,” “Got My Mojo Working,” and “Don’t Get Me Talking”. I was really impressed with Cotton’s harp blowing, as were most of the audience, who were cheering and dancing.

Closing out Friday night was Zora Young, a distant relative of Howlin’ Wolf. She performed a tribute to Sunnyland Slim and Howlin’ Wolf with some of Sunnyland’s bandmates and was joined by Hubert Sumlin. “Forty Four,” “Sitting On Top Of The World”and “I’m Leavin’ You” were some Wolf favorites performed during the closing set. It was a great day for Chicago Blues and things were just getting started.

Saturday was cooler and Spoonful was the theme for the day. Smaller stage artists included Toronzo and the
Cannonball Express
, Sugar Blue, and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. Early evening rain cooled things off but everyone stayed and got weather and blues treats! Nellie “Tiger” Travis opened the main stage with a rainy but great set that paid tribute to the late Queen of the blues, Koko Taylor. Travis sung with her usual heart and soul on “Let
The Good Times Roll,” “I’m A Woman,” “Wang Dang Doodle,” and “Queen Of The Blues,” a song about Koko Taylor.

The rain stopped, the sun came out, and it was time for a set by Bobby Parker and the Blues Night Band. His set was solid with the classic “Hey, Hey, The Blues Are All Right” and the Wolf hit “I Aint Superstitious.”

Then came the big boys. The closing two-hour set featured a number of great bluesman billed as “Chicago Blues: A
Living History”
, named after the 2009 2-CD release. The set featured the bluesmen from the album that included Billy Boy
Arnold
, Billy Branch,
John Primer, Lurrie Bell, and special guest
Carlos Johnson. The band also included Johnny Iguana on piano, Kenny Smith on drums, Fulton Crews on bass, and Billy Flynn on guitar. The set featured many songs from the album like “My Little Machine,” “I Wish You Would” and “She’s Love Crazy,” all sung by Billy Boy Arnold. John Primer came out next with Matt Skoller on harp with “Your Imagination.” After “Highway 49,” harp master Billy Branch came out and did “Sugar Sweet,” “Hoodoo Man,” and “Hate To See You Go.” Carlos Johnson and Lurrie Bell then joined in to finish an absolutely smoking set on a beautiful Chicago night.

Most of these great musicians are playing in Chicago on a regular basis and I would urge everyone to GO SEE LIVE BLUES!

Saturday Eye Candy: Bobby Sheehan of Blues Traveler

WE LIGHT A BIRTHDAY CANDLE FOR ONE OF JAM’S LOST SOLDIERS

Original Blues Traveler bassist Bobby Sheehan would have turned 42 today. Sadly, he passed away at just 31 years of age in 1999. JamBase and the community that’s built up around it owe a debt to Sheehan and his bandmates for their efforts in the 1990s to promote and celebrate all things “jam.” We raise a toast to you, Bobby, and the rest of Blues Traveler this weekend.

Blue Traveler performs tomorrow, Sunday, June 13, at Bonnaroo at The Other Tent from 3:00-4:00 pm.

Let’s kick it off with “But Anyway” live on The Soundboy Show.

Traveler was a staple at beloved jam mecca the Wetlands Preserve in NYC. Here they are kicking Charlie Daniels’ ditty around.

It’s easy to forget in these days of Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and myriad other fests, that jam-minded bands didn’t always have it so easy. One major push for the notion of jam rock came from the H.O.R.D.E. tours instigated by Blues Traveler.

Here’s the band in 1994 with guest Warren Haynes.

Since we’re time traveling back to the ’90s, let’s check out this clip from Dennis Miller’s late night show before the conservative demons crawled into his head. Nice vest, dude!

We wrap this small remembrance with a pretty, orchestra fueled version of one of Traveler’s more wistful numbers.

Green-energy blues

Investors wonder if the renewable-energy boom is over

IF ANY industry ought to be seeing silver iridescence in the dark slick of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, it is renewable energy. However, since what is perhaps the biggest environmental disaster America has yet seen erupted at BP’s Macondo prospect on April 20th the RENIXX index, which measures the world’s 30 largest publicly traded renewable-energy companies, has fallen by 15%. This is even worse than the 12% fall in the MSCI world stockmarkets index in that period. Moreover, it continues a longer-term decline of more than two-thirds from the index’s all-time high in December 2007.

The oil spill might have been expected to revive a sense of urgency that the world, and America in particular, should reduce its dependence on oil, not least by switching to cleaner, greener sources of energy. Instead it is increasingly common to hear investors asking gloomily, “Is green dead?” …
