Bob Weir to Perform with Marin Symphony Orchestra

BOB WEIR TEAMS UP WITH MARIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR;
SPECIAL ONE-NIGHT-ONLY
PERFORMANCE OF GRATEFUL DEAD MUSIC

Bob Weir & The
Marin Symphony Orchestra

Bob Weir has announced
plans for a special once-in-a-lifetime performance of Grateful Dead music with the Marin Symphony Orchestra to be held Saturday, May 7 at the
Marin Center in San Rafael, CA. Pre-sale tickets will be available January 31 via www.gdtstoo.com and the public on-sale is February 4 and will be available
through the Marin Center Box Office (11am-4pm PT, 415-499-6800) and through www.ticketmaster.com.

The “First Fusion” performance, orchestrated by Weir and Stanford University’s Dr. Giancarlo Aquilanti, is a
benefit for the Marin Symphony Orchestra and will feature over 50 musicians interpreting Grateful Dead music, the
band Weir co-founded in 1965.

Weir says, “This is completely different. For one thing, part of what makes this interesting is that’s not just going to
be an orchestra playing Grateful Dead songs. I’m going to be playing too, along with Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane,
Robin Sylvester, Rob Wasserman
and some other guys, and there’s going to be real interaction between the
symphony and us.” Excited about the sonic explorations the music may take, Dr. Aquilanti described it as “a new
medium” and Weir adds that “this is definitely going to go to some new realms.”

Willie Nelson, Warren Haynes Surprise Fans With Election Calls

?UESTLOVE, WAYNE COYNE, GRACE POTTER, YIM YAMES, AND OTHERS ALSO CALL
FANS

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson, ?uestlove of The Roots, and Wayne Coyne of
the Flaming Lips are among the
dozen musicians involved with the “Pledge to Vote” campaign staged by HeadCount, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes electoral
participation. Each artist recorded reminders that will be sent to fans before Election Day via automated phone calls.
In addition, most artist participants will be making live calls – surprising fans who expect to only hear a pre-
recorded message.

“Let’s get some folks cranked up about this,” said The Grateful Dead‘s Bob Weir, a HeadCount board member who will also be personally calling dozens of
voters. “It’s so important that people, particularly young people, are paying attention and voting so a bunch of
cranky old folks don’t steal their future. Hopefully getting a call from a familiar voice will be motivation.”

Close to 25,000 music enthusiasts have already made a “Pledge to Vote” at concerts or on HeadCount’s website, www.headcount.org, requesting a reminder phone call from
one of their favorite artists and affirming that they will vote in November. The full list of artist choices include:

?uestlove
Adam Gardner (Guster)
Matt Berninger (The National)
Warren Haynes (The Allman Bros., Gov’t Mule)
Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits)
Willie Nelson
Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips)
Grace Potter
Brett Dennen
Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, Furthur)

Jon Fishman (Phish)
Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket)

Fans can still sign up for the calls by visiting www.HeadCount.org/pledge.

Sat Eye Candy: Bob Weir

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOB!

Bust out your khaki shorts and Birkenstocks and do a happy shuffle for Bob Weir, who turns 63 today. As a member of the Grateful Dead, leader of RatDog and all the other variations like Furthur, Weir has helped navigate one of the great songbooks in American music as well as pioneering a live music style that will continue to inspire forever. Here’s a few tidbits from Bobby’s vast repertoire in celebration of his natal day.

We begin with a sing-along crowd pleaser.

Here’s Bob talking about the dynamics of RatDog before playing a great version of one of the band’s best numbers.

Weir has been an on-again, off-again participant in the band Kingfish since the early 1970s. Here’s the band in Half Moon Bay, CA in the late 80s.

Taken from the “Stealth Rehearsals” at the Mill Valley Masonic, here’s Furthur with one of Bob’s signature tunes.

Despite a reputation outside the flock as a bunch of hippies, the Grateful Dead was one of THE most musically robust acts ever. Here’s the evidence.

After Jerry Garcia’s sudden passing the future of Dead music seemed in question. Without much pause, The Other Ones came roaring out to keep things rolling. This clip comes from the first show played at Alpine Valley after Garcia’s death.

Bob has always had a way with covers, and this is one of his early best.

Furthur | Santa Barbara | Pics | Review

Furthur :: 09.20.10 :: Santa Barbara Bowl :: Santa Barbara, CA

Bob Weir by L. Paul
Mann

Alive and well, despite being quite Dead, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir brought Furthur to the Santa Barbara Bowl
last week. Playing a marathon show lasting three and a half hours (with a 30 minute intermission), the fathers of
jam band music and their new entourage proved they are still masters of their genre. The show began right at the
official 6 pm start time and had aging fans dancing and prancing from the moment they arrived onstage. It seemed
everywhere you looked someone was doing some sort of hippy dance. Although most of the crowd was middle-
aged and up, there were a surprising number of new wave hippies in their teens and twenties. Throw in a few
hundred young children and the crowd truly represented every demographic, resembling a sort of giant, undulating
commune.

Furthur is really just an extension of the original Grateful Dead, featuring original members Lesh and Weir with
longtime RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, Former Dark Star Orchestra guitarist John Kadlecik,
Joe Russo on drums, and backup singers, Sunshine Garcia Becker and Jeff Pehrson.
Like the original Dead, Furthur changes the setlist for every performance. It is one of the reasons that avid fans
follow the band from city to city and will attend multiple concerts hoping to hear seldom-played rare gems in the
Dead catalog.

The Santa Barbara show featured most of side one of their 1975 record Blues for Allah, including “Franklin’s
Tower,” which had the crowd chanting the chorus (“roll awayÂ…the dew”) in happy unison. In addition to many Dead
classics, the band also played “Money for Gasoline” from Weir’s RatDog project and a new song called “Seven Hills of
Gold.” Two classic covers – Traffic’s “Feelin Alright” and The Beatles’ “Come Together” – also had fans singing like a
church choir. At the end of the second set, nearly four hours after the show began, Lesh made a brief plea for
people to donate their organs and discussed the liver transplant that had saved his life. The band then played a final
song, “Attics of My Life,” and took a long bow. It has been a long strange trip indeed, and for these veteran
musicians it hasn’t ended yet.

Setlist
Set I:Hell In a Bucket, Cream Puff War, Feelin’ Alright, Me and My Uncle, Althea, Money for Gasoline, Comes
a Time, Turn On Your Lovelight
Set II: Viola Lee Blues (first and second verses), Seven Hills of Gold, Viola Lee Blues (third verse), The
Eleven, King Solomon’s Marbles, Days Between, Help on the Way > Slipknot!> Franklin’s Tower
E:Donor Rap (liver transplant recipient Lesh’s plea for people to become organ donors), Come Together,
Attics of My Life

Jerry Garcia Honored At Giants Game In San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants hosted a tribute to the late great Jerry Garcia during last night’s game vs. the
Chicago Cubs at AT&T Park in honor of
the 15 year anniversary of the Grateful Dead guitarist’s death.

The evening included many Dead-oriented activities, including the giveaway of Garcia Bobblehead dolls; the cover
band Cryptical performing
“Shakedown Street” and “Touch of Grey” before the game; Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Jeff Pehrson
singing the National Anthem; and Billy Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and Bill Walton leading the
crowd in a Guinness Book of World Records kazoo-infused rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the
seventh inning stretch. Jerry’s family was on hand for the event with his daughter Annabel Garcia throwing
out the first pitch and saying a few words about her father.

The evening benefited The Rex
Foundation
, which was founded by the Grateful Dead to support worthy non-profit organizations.

The Giants beat the Cubs 4-3 in the 11th inning.

Gathering of the Vibes 2010 | Photos

Gathering of the Vibes :: 07.29.10-08.01.10 :: Seaside Park ::
Bridgeport, CT

Amidst a sea of tie-dye and Dead-y emanations, another Gathering of the Vibes went
down this past weekend. An unusually sunny, cloudless sky loomed over Bridgeport,
Connecticut’s Seaside Park for four straight days this past weekend, making the 2010 GOTV
a great success. Oh, and the music was fantastic too. From festival regulars like Dark Star Orchestra,
Donna Jean
Godchaux
and Max Creek to Jimmy Cliff, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Damian “Jr. Gong”
Marley
& Nas
and a newly reunited Primus (with
original drummer Jay Lane, who has also played with RatDog and Furthur), the
diverse lineup was nothing short of stellar.

Day One was off to a good start, with DSO, the Quincy Mumford Band, Donna Jean, and the
New Riders of the
Purple Sage
on the festival’s main stage – all celebrating the life and legacy of
Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. The party continued on the Green Vibes Stage until
the wee hours of the morning with Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Day Two saw more gorgeous weather, more
dancing, and more bands like Jackie Greene, Steve Kimock Crazy Engine, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Robert Randolph,
and the highly anticipated Furthur performance. Aside from a few lyrical flubs on Bob
Weir
‘s part, the two sets were packed with tight jams and beautiful musicianship. They
closed the evening with an exceptional encore of “Lady with a Fan > Terrapin > At a Siding
> Terrapin Flyer.”

Days Three and Four were alive with energy, as Max Creek, The Rhythm Devils
with Keller
Williams
, Assembly
of Dust
, Primus, Galactic, Umphrey’s McGee, Little Feat, Jimmy Cliff, and a festival closer of Damian Marley &
Nas. While the burnt, worn-out crowd normally thins out on the last day of the Vibes, the
concert field remained packed with fans in high spirits, willing and able to continue the
party. It looks like Gathering of the Vibes 2011 might be well underway already.

Grateful Dead Warner Bros. Vinyl Box

AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 21 FROM GRATEFUL DEAD/RHINO; DELUXE BOX SET FEATURES FIVE WARNER
BROS. RECORDS STUDIO ALBUMS

Grateful Dead

Between 1967 and 1970, the Grateful
Dead
recorded five studio albums for Warner Bros. Records that formed the psychedelic canon on which
the band’s live legend was built. The albums spotlighted the early core lineup of Jerry Garcia, Ron “Pigpen”
McKernan, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann,
and Mickey Hart.

Grateful Dead and Rhino will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Workingman’s Dead and American
Beauty
with The Warner Bros. Studio Albums, a five-LP boxed set available on September 21.
The collection contains The Grateful Dead (1967), Workingman’s Dead, and American Beauty (1970), plus
the original mixes for Anthem Of The Sun (1968) and Aoxomoxoa (1969), available on vinyl for the
first time in nearly 40 years.

Available for a list price of $134.98, the set offers detailed replicas of the original albums housed in a hard-shell
case that protects and stores the music with the accompanying 12″ x 12″ book including unpublished photos and
new liner notes by Blair Jackson. To ensure the highest degree of quality, the albums were pressed on 180-gram
vinyl at RTI using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

Those who pre-order from Dead.net will receive an exclusive reproduction of a rare 1968 7″ single (in a picture
sleeve) that features the studio version of “Dark Star” (b/w “Born Cross-Eyed”) that clocks in at a concise 2:38.
Dead.net pre-orders also receive a reproduction of a rare 1967 promotional poster for the first album from the
Warner Bros. Records archive.

The original mixes for Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa—featured here for the first time since they were released
—went out of circulation in 1972 and 1971 respectively. Garcia and Lesh revisited Aoxomoxoa two years after its
release in an effort to cut through the dense mix, which was a result of the band’s extensive experimenting in the
studio with one of the first 16-track recorders. The overhaul changed the album’s sound significantly, including the
end of “Doin’ That Rag,” which originally closed with an a cappella vocal coda that was later removed.

15th anniversary of his passing. Fans who purchase a special event ticket will receive a seat in the Jerry Garcia

Nateva Music Festival: 07.02-07.04 | Maine

(Oxford, ME)
View Photos

The first-ever Nateva Music & Camping
Festival
was an impressive launch for an event that CEO Frank Chandler hopes will become an annual
institution. Factors ranging from attendance to lack of on-site camping may have caused the promoters headaches,
but for ticket-holding music lovers, Nateva demonstrated that there was no better place to spend 4th of July
weekend. Every new event hits a few roadblocks, so below are a list of weekend highlights, as well as a few thoughts
on how to improve the festival for next year.

Top Highlights

1. The McLovins
These teens from Connecticut have developed a cult following thanks to their self-made YouTube videos going viral.
Although they were far from top-bill, anyone who attended their Saturday afternoon performance will tell you they
dished out the best set of the weekend. If further acknowledgement was needed, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips had the acne-clad teens
grace the stage in costume during the Lips’ headline set. No other performers had the crowd wound so tightly
around their finger at any point in the weekend, Wayne Coyne included.

2. The Electronica Acts
Nateva booked psychedelic, reggae, hip-hop, and jam bands galore, but no genre represented quite like the
electronica acts. Ghostland
Observatory
‘s laser lights show was Friday’s highlight, and the night before Lotus served up a solid set of dance-
grooves that let the early birds get the party started. Concluding at 4:20am, EOTO‘s performance was by far the
best late-night set of the weekend, and Sound Tribe Sector 9‘s sundown set was the largest dance-party of the weekend,
featuring the single best sound quality heard during any of the 50-plus performances on the roster.

3. Joe Russo of Furthur
There’s not a whole lot left for Phil
Lesh
and Bob
Weir
to do with the Grateful
Dead
catalog that they haven’t already done. That’s why it was the latest addition to the Grateful Dead family
that really made the show interesting. Joe Russo has backed Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio to fill the shoes of Jon Fishman on tour with G.R.A.B., and as half of the Benevento/Russo Duo he’s made a name
for himself as one of the finest drummers of our generation. More than “Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s
Tower,” a cover of “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” Bobby’s short-shorts or the 4th of July fireworks, the highlight of Furthur’s set
was hearing how Sir Joe Russo brought new life to decades-old Dead tunes.

4. The Logistics
Nateva offered up the lineup of a national-scale festival with the creature comforts of a backyard BBQ. For a first-
time event, Nateva aced all of the “details” that can make or break a festival. All on-site camping was a short
distance to the stage, and Wayne Coyne was spot-on when he commented that the Port-O-Potties were “clean
enough to eat off of.” The sound system was golden, but most the important logistical factor was the effectiveness
of security. For any festivalgoer whose been up at night in their tent, annoyed or unsettled by the hissing of a
nitrous tank or overly rowdy neighbors, you would have been well-rested at Nateva. The events security team
walked the fine line of keeping hands-off while effectively asserting control over the premises. “Personal use” was
openly engaged in throughout the weekend but the sketchier, more-aggressive elements that come along with the
drug trade were checked at the door. This played a large part in what made Nateva the most family friendly festival
around.

3 Tips For Next Year

1. More Sensible Scheduling
On paper, scheduling Umphrey’s
McGee
and Keller
Williams
to go on before moe. is a smart move, but not when you have Jakob Dylan and Passion Pit in between. These are
all solid acts that deserve a place at Nateva, but when moe. is the biggest act of the day, you should orchestrate the
bill around the jam band crowd. Umphrey’s played an uninspired afternoon set prior to Keller Williams’ performance,
but after those shows, the overwhelming majority of the attendees went back to camp until moe. came on. As a
result, Dylan, Passion Pit and Jackie
Greene
played to a near-empty field and the rhythm of the day’s schedule was thrown off. The non-
jammy acts should have gone on prior to groups like Umphrey’s and Keller. Everyone loves eclecticism, but if you’re
catering to a jam band crowd, be sure to give the actual jam bands priority over the crooners and indie darlings.

2. Lower Ticket Price
The festival-going masses have proved time and time again that they are willing to pay $250 for a weekend of music,
if it’s worth it. But events charging that much tend to be more like Bonnaroo Music Festival than Newport Folk Festival. Nateva caught a
break when the Rothbury Music
Festival
announced they were not holding an event this year, but if they come back next summer, Nateva will be
in direct competition. If Nateva wants to survive, they’ll need to make their product more competitive by charging
considerably less for admission.

3. Increase On-Site Camping
Increasing on-site camping is the single most important change needed to ensure this events survival. Nateva had a
15,000-person capacity but only a third of those ticket holders were offered on-site camping. The rest were
expected to camp 2.5 miles from the event and be shuttled back and forth. Needless to say, this was not popular
with potential attendees and the empty off-site parking lots testified to that. On-site camping sold out in advance
and was a major hit, but if Nateva wants to turn a profit and draw in a max-capacity crowd, they’ll need to find a way
to offer everyone in attendance on-site accommodations.

JamBase | Memorial Day

Memorial Day Weekend Fest Preview

By: Dennis Cook, JamBase Associate
Editor

Summer festival season kicks into high gear this coming weekend with dozens of festivals
around the United States. JamBase takes a look at five of the finest gatherings coming up
and makes a few helpful suggestions beyond the big names at the top of the bills for those
about to rock beneath the stars around this great country.

Summer Camp Festival | Chillicothe, IL

We begin with one of the jewels of the jam world, the
10th Annual Summer
Camp
, taking place Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30, with a pre-festival
party on Thursday, May 27 in Chillicothe, IL, at the Three Sisters Park.
Anchored by three days of moe. and Umphrey’s McGee performances, the tenth edition of this festival
also includes headlining sets from The Avett Brothers, Gov’t Mule and
Yonder Mountain
String Band
. Here’s a few acts well worth working into your schedule if you’re
heading to Summer Camp.

1. Backyard Tire
Fire
:: Thursday :: 6:30-7:30 pm :: Starshine Stage

Ed Anderson is one of the few singer-songwriters out there to give Tom Petty and
Springsteen an honest run for their money in the meat ‘n’ taters rock game. With his
stalwart bandmates, Anderson makes music for the day-to-day slog and those sweet moments
away from the grind of it all. Foot stompin’ greatness is all but guaranteed at this set,
which could set your whole weekend at Summer Camp off on just the right foot. BTF also
plays on Saturday from 1:00-2:15 pm on the Sunshine Stage.

2. Split Lip
Rayfield
:: Friday night :: 12:30 am-2:30 am :: Campfire Stage

A great number of top-flight musicians have been seen sporting Split Lip Rayfield t-shirts
over the years. That’s a positive sign right there, and if you dig into their rootsy,
irreverent music you’ll probably want to wear one, too. There’s something intrinsically
right and unpasteurized about Split Lip, a spirit punk rockers and bluegrass lovers can
both vibe on equally. Their Late Night Campfire Jam is likely to have a gravitational
pull to many of the musician fans at Summer Camp, so don’t be too surprised at the
surprises likely to ensue.

3. The New
Mastersounds
:: Sunday :: 4:00-5:00 pm :: Sunshine Stage

Simply put, if you love soulful, funky music you’re missing out if you don’t check out
England’s New Mastersounds, who possess one of the sharpest, coolest approaches to the
genre going today. There’s just the right mix of rawness and polish to them, and the
quartet’s interplay borders on telepathic.

DelFest | Cumberland, MD

DelFest is a string band mecca
sporting three sets from hosts the Del McCoury Band. This year’s DelFest happens May 27-30 in
Cumberland, MD, and includes performances from Yonder and The Avett Brothers (they do
get around
), Railroad Earth and many more. There’s tremendous overlap and bounteous
collaboration at this festival, which somehow takes the spirit of back porch jamming and
gives it flair and style without losing the essential hominess. Here’s some acts worth
putting on your dance card at DelFest this year.

1. Uncle Earl
:: Friday :: 6:15-7:30 pm :: Grandstand Stage

These crazy talented ladies haven’t been out live much lately, so one should enjoy them
whenever they can. What’s wonderful about Uncle Earl is how they stitch together so many
different threads from string music past and present. There’s a timeless vibe to their
originals and their interplay is pretty spectacular in general. Uncle Earl also performs
on Saturday at DelFest on the Potomac Stage from 12:45-1:45 pm. For more on Uncle Earl,
peep the JamBase feature centered around their last studio release.

2. Dave Rawlings
Machine
:: Sunday :: 10:15-11:55 pm :: Grandstand Stage

Though he’s often the only one standing next to Gillian Welch,
Rawlings is often overshadowed by his longtime partner in crime. She is pretty compelling
but so is this hyper-gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. The longer the
Rawlings Machine trundles along in recent years, the more fascinating it becomes, both in
his own compositions and inspired cover choices.

3. Trampled By
Turtles
:: Saturday :: 5:15-6:15 pm :: Potomac Stage

Singer-guitarist Dave Simonett writes some of the most enduring, resonant songs
coming out of any contemporary string band, and he and the rest of the Turtles breath fire
live, stirring up a ruckus that seems nigh impossible for guys seated onstage. They’ve
also got a tender side that’s genuinely stirring. Young and possessed with a real drive
to show the world what they’ve got, TBT has all the makings of a future headliner at fests
like Del’s and Northwest String Summit. See ‘em now so you can tell your kids about it
when they’re famous. TBT also plays a special Friday Late Night set at 12:15 am – 1:15 am in Delfest Music Hall.

Sasquatch Festival | George, WA

Sasquatch!
returns to The Gorge in
George, WA, May 29-31. If one wants a barometer of the next wave of artists to crest into
cult or even alternative mainstream success, this is the spot to take your readings. With
a finely tuned mixture of emerging and well established acts, Sasquatch! is a vibrant,
fascinating rock microcosm in a fab setting. Headliners My Morning Jacket, Pavement, Massive Attack
and Ween
will undoubtedly deliver the goods, but here’s three acts we’d also like to put on your
radar.

1. Dawes ::
Saturday :: 12:00-12:35 pm :: Bigfoot Stage

After releasing one of the finest rock debuts in ages in 2009, the stunningly resonant
North Hills (JamBase review), this Los Angeles band has pretty much stayed on the road
honing their craft and further fleshing out what were already wonderful songs. Anyone
with a love for The Band, vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash (or especially their respective
early ’70s solo work) or simply beautifully crafted, powerful, well-rooted rock will find
almost too much to adore in Dawes. They are the first band to hit the stage at Sasquatch!
this year but they will likely be one of the best anyone sees.

2. Vetiver ::
Sunday :: 6:25-7:10 pm :: Yeti Stage

Talk about a band that has ALL the fundamentals locked down – strong songcraft,
empathetic, intelligent playing, potent heart and soul – Vetiver pretty much nails the
core things that make a band interesting and worth allowing into one’s life. Bandleader
Andy Cabic pens tunes that hum and skip on the order of folk’s like Nick Drake, Kris
Kristofferson and other prime root sources, and then he and the band take them to places
both rocky and patiently lovely.

3. The Mountain
Goats
:: Monday :: 5:40-6:25 pm :: Bigfoot Stage

If you mixed up Jonathan Richman, Woody Guthrie, Syd Barrett and a traveling holy roller
preacher into one person you might get head Goat John Darnielle.
There’s something strangely moving and off-kilter funny about the Goats’ music, and yet
one has no problem imagining any of the named touchstones pulling up a chair and drinking
in what Darnielle is dishing out.

Furthur Festival | Angels Camp,
CA

There’s likely only one prime destination for lovers of Grateful Dead music over Memorial
Day Weekend, and that’s the Furthur
Festival
in the Sierra Foothills at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, May 28-30.
Centered around a series of full album presentations (see full details here) by Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, there’s
more than just Dead to enjoy at this new fest.

1. Mark Karan &
Jemimah Puddleduck
:: Saturday :: Furthur Stage

One of the joys of Puddleduck is it lets Karan’s MANY gifts shine. Largely known for his
ever-tasty guitar work with RatDog, Karan is also a dead good singer-songwriter with a
real knack for picking really satisfying cover material with his own band, including Randy
Newman, Little Feat and other kindred spirits. Puddleduck is a good time starter to the
main stage well worth getting out of your tent in time to catch.

2. The Mother
Hips
:: Sunday :: Further Stage

It’s kind of dangerous to call any band “perfect” but there’s a lot of mounting evidence
over the decades that Northern California’s roots-rock-pop stalwarts The Mother Hips are
just that – freakin’ perfect. For charged, wonderfully executed, guitar heavy rock ‘n’
roll WITH a truly breathtaking catalog and one of the tighest, coolest rhythm sections
ever, well, one would be very hard pressed to find better. Seeing the Hips for the first
time is a conversion experience for most. Don’t be surprised if you go scrambling to hear
every note you can after you experience this set.

3. Dark Hollow Stage :: All Weekend

The small acoustic showcase stage will be curated by Larry Campbell and Teresa
Williams
and will likely be ground zero for some stunning troubadour action. Folks
will be treated to an array of “friends” dropping by, and even if it’s just Campbell and
his missus wooing you with song you won’t go wrong!

Those wanting an additional day in festival bliss can check out Furthurmore on Monday, May 31, at River Ranch
Campground in Tuolumne, CA. This fine epilogue to the first Furthur Fest features 7 Walkers
featuring Bill Kreutzmann and Papa Mali, Everyone Orchestra
featuring Steve Kimock, Melvin Seals, George Porter Jr, Dan Lebowitz, Aaron Redner, Dave
Brogan, Nat Keefe, Jans Ingber and more, plus the triumphant return of Holy Kimoto with
Steve Kimock, Kyle Hollingsworth, Michael Travis, and Jason Hann.

Desert Rocks | Moab, UT

With crowd pleasers like Melvin Seals & JGB, Groundation and The Mother Hips topping the bill and a
unique, stunning setting in the Moab Desert in Utah, this smaller fest is shaping up to be
one of the best annual gatherings of truly talented working bands in the U.S. Without
relying on safe, name brand festival anchor bands, Desert Rocks – taking place this year May 27-30
- has grown each year by the merits of its spirit and good taste in lineups. Here’s three
worthies attendees should check out this year.

1. Lubriphonic
:: Thursday :: 8:00-9:15 pm :: Uncanny Stage

This Chicago-based self-describe “rock & soul stew” has the sophistication and sharp edges
of vintage Steely Dan but a blues soul that’s dusty and rugged as one could want.
Lubriphonic has killer tunes and is a reliable powerhouse live. If you’re headed to
Desert Rocks looking to come home with a new favorite, this band is likely to be a strong
contender for that position.

2. Wisebird ::
Friday :: 7:30-8:45 pm :: Desert Rocks Stage

If you love crankin’ good ol’ rock & roll with the windows down and the white lines flying
past at an alarming pace, then Wisebird is gonna hit your sweet spot like an Everlasting
Gobstopper. There’s a ton of abundant boogie soul to these boys and a little of the
battered denim je ne sais quoi one finds in The Black Crowes and Drive-By Truckers. Pour
some whiskey down your gullet and just dance like your body wants to as Wisebird plays and
things are gonna loosen up for you in a real nice way. Added bonus: the Bow &
Sparrow Aerial Ballet
will join them for this set. Wisebird also performs on Saturday
night, 12:20-1:50 am.

3. David Gans ::
Saturday :: 5:00-6:00 pm :: Desert Rocks Stage

While known for his work around the Grateful Dead both in print and on the radio for
decades, Gans is a damn fine songwriter and performer in his own right. Yes, his
interpretations of Dead numbers are great, but it’s his nose for primo work from other
contemporaries like Railroad Earth and his own songs that increasingly knock one out. And
you gotta have respect for anyone who can hold an audience rapt or make them skip standing
alone with just a guitar on stage, something Gans accomplishes and makes look so natural
it doesn’t seem like work.

UNPRECEDENTED LIVE PRESENTATION OF CLASSIC ALBUMS IN THEIR ENTIRETY

Phil & Bob in Furthur by Susan J. Weiand

Furthur will perform six classic Grateful Dead albums at Furthur Fest, taking place May 28-30 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, CA. The schedule is:

Saturday – Set I – American Beauty
Saturday – Set II – Workingman’s Dead
Saturday – Set III – Anthem of the Sun
Sunday – Set I – Blues For Allah
Sunday – Set II – Aoxomoxoa
Sunday – Set III – Terrapin Station

In an ongoing series of videos discussing these Grateful Dead albums, the latest installment features Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, along with kindred spirit-turned-intrepid-interviewer Jackie Greene and longtime Grateful Dead road manager Rock Scully, talking about the creation of Workingman’s Dead. The quality of the songs Jerry was bringing to the table, along with the influence of Crosby, Stills and Nash, are revealed as two of the biggest inspirations behind the 1970 classic. Check out the video and the earlier discussion of American Beauty here.

Furthur will do an “Open Aire Soundcheck” on Friday, May 28. The full Furthur Stage schedule for the weekend can be found here, and the schedule for the daytime Sunshine Stage is here. The schedule for the acoustic Dark Hollow Stage, curated by Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams has not been set, but the late night set for Friday will be an All-Star Jam Session and on Saturday night it’s Galactic at what the fest has dubbed the “Frogtown Fillmore.”
