Pollution in the Himalayas: Time to call the sweep?

Soot gets everywhere. Even into the world’s highest mountains

THE Himalayas and the adjacent Tibetan plateau are sometimes referred to as the Earth’s third pole, because of the amount of ice they host. They are also known as Asia’s water tower. Their glaciers feed the continent’s largest rivers—and those, in turn, sustain some 1.5 billion people. Many studies suggest, though, that the Himalayan glaciers have been shrinking over the past few decades. This has usually been attributed to rising air temperatures, but climate researchers have now come to realise that tiny airborne particles of soot and dust are also to blame. Being dark, they absorb sunlight. And that warms their surroundings.

Near cities, and in regions like South-East Asia, where people are clearing vegetation by burning it, soot is expected. But as Angela Marinoni of the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate in Bologna explained to an audience at the 2nd Third Pole Environment Workshop in Kathmandu on October 27th, the high Himalayas are also under an onslaught from this sort of pollution. Even at altitudes above 5,000 metres (16,400 feet), soot is widespread. And when it lands on glaciers it accelerates their melting. …

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Tour/Album

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Premiere Video and Announce U.S. Tour
in Support of New Album, Kollaps Tradixionales

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) returns with its sixth full-length recording and first since the band’s lineup change in summer 2008. Having shed three members and recruiting a new drummer, the group officially dropped the “Tra-La-La Band” from its name, played a debut performance as a newly minted quintet at All
Tomorrow’s Parties in upstate NY, and embarked on an extensive European tour through the Fall of 2008. As Kollaps Tradixionales ably demonstrates, the band has lost none of its raw and frazzled anthemic power and continues to forge bold new ground in its search for a unique hybrid of punk, blues, psych, folk and modern orchestral idioms.

Kollaps Tradixionales is available on standard CD (in a custom gatefold paperboard jacket) and limited-edition deluxe CD (which is packaged together with a 6″x9″ 16-page perfect-bound art book and poster). The album also comes in a deluxe first pressing on double 10″ vinyl, with the art book, a CD copy, and two different posters
inside. The album is also available digitally. You can purchase the album here.

Kollaps Tradixionales Track List:
1. There Is A Light
2. I Built Myself A Metal Bird
3. I Fed My Metal Bird The Wings Of Other Metal Birds
4. Kollapz Tradixional (Thee Olde Dirty Flag)
5. Collapse Traditional (For Darling)
6. Kollaps Tradicional (Bury 3 Dynamos)
7. ‘Piphany Rambler

The New Mastersounds Tour

The New Mastersounds U.S. Tour This Fall 2009

The New Mastersounds

After the band’s most successful year to date, The New Mastersounds will be wrapping up 2009 with one final U.S tour. The East Coast tour will kick off at The Southern in Charlottesville, VA on November 4, continuing on to other noteworthy venues including the 8 x 10 in Baltimore, MD and The Bowery Ballroom in NYC, before wrapping up the tour at Bear Creek Music Festival in Live Oak, FL.

This year marked the release of the album Plug & Play on Universal Records independent arm Fontana & One Note Records, tours through Japan, Italy, Canada and the U.K., festival stops including Bumbershoot, Ottawa Bluesfest and Wakarusa and saw the band sharing bills with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Sly & Robbie, Matisyahu and The Black Crowes. The band’s music has been in such high demand that they will be releasing a new LP Ten Years On available exclusively as a digital download and at live shows. The CD version features a very special bonus track with a vocal contribution from Grace Potter, the 24-year-old ascendant rock star and friend of the Mastersounds from the U.S. festival scene.

Led by guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts, The New Mastersounds feature Joe Tatton on Hammond, Pete Shand on bass and Simon Allen on drums.
