Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band | NYE | Review

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi :: 12.31.10 :: Florida Theatre :: Jacksonville, Florida

Derek & Susan by Ray Proetto

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo acts on hold in 2010 to write and make music together with a fresh new band. In April they began playing new songs, trying to find their identity. Ten months later they have evolved into a cohesive unit, putting out sets of music that flow as majestically as the nearby St. Johns River into the Atlantic Ocean. Their New Year’s Eve celebration took place near the river banks of Jacksonville, Florida.

After an opening set from Scrapmatic, the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band began their NYE set with “Don’t Let Me Slide” followed by my personal favorite “Midnight in Harlem,” a hopeful tune with a comforting and familiar feel. Derek & The Dominoes tune “Anyday” saw Trucks sliding up and down his guitar, evoking cheers from the attentive audience. The show took a turn down Funky Street with “Love Has Something Else to Say.” Brothers Oteil (bass, Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, Derek Trucks Band) emanated fun-loving grooves from their corner of the stage all night long, making way for some patrons to sashay in their New Year’s attire up the aisles of the Florida Theatre (until being told to sit down by security).

Horn section by Ray Proetto

Kebbi Williams flowed through his saxophone across the stage, inspiring impressive leads from Oteil. Though this marked only the second show with the horn section, put together specifically for this New Year’s run, it seemed as if they had been in the band since April. Joining Williams, on trombone, was Saunders “Service” Sermons and Maurice “Mo’ Betta” Brown on trumpet.

The execution of the Eric Clapton arrangement of “Presence of the Lord” had more and more people finding their way to their feet. However, most in the audience remained unsure of what to do with themselves physically, most remaining seated and grooving cerebrally. Mike Mattison took lead vocal duties on Taj Mahal‘s “Leaving Trunk,” which made way for new blues number “That Did It”. The verses have Mattison and Mark Rivers laying down playful background vocal harmonies with Motown-esque Aah-ooh’s while Susan sings a soulful tale of heartache.

It is no secret that Susan is a world class vocalist, but on “That Did It” her guitar skills were front and center. She laid into her instrument with enough soul and power to make the ghost of Sister Rosetta Tharpe proud. Her approach to the six-string is a no-gimmick, loud and subtle reminder that she is the mother of Derek Trucks’ children.

Derek Trucks’ role as bandleader is performed perfectly. He gives everyone else onstage the space they need to become who they are musically. At times, when all eyes turn to him for a solo, he will defer the moment to someone else. Once everybody has found themselves in their given space, Trucks’ bright red Gibson SG is implied. With a meditative expression on his face, Derek tears sonic holes in the universe; each one providing grist for the mill of his spiritual journey with a guitar.

“Learn How to Love” is a thick swamp-fueled song that Derek and Susan wrote with Eric Krasno. Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost” made an appearance late in the set featuring a powerful, tribal and lyrical drum solo which started with Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell on groove duty while JJ Johnson took lead until handing it off to Greenwell, which led to both drummers playing off of each other with brilliant melody. The other band members gave the drummers their full, conscious attention during the drum solo, including Trucks, who took a knee center-stage as if to show respect for the most ancient form of musical expression.

Derek & Susan Band by Ray Proetto

The best, and rarest, quality of a good drummer is selflessness. Johnson and Greenwell pull selflessness out of each other creating a huge seamless rhythmic foundation on which the rest of the band rests upon. The end of “Garvey’s Ghost” began a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain.” which Derek and Susan recorded earlier in the year with Herbie Hancock at their backyard home studio.

The triumphant vocals at the beginning of Delany & Bonnie’s “Coming Home” started the countdown to midnight. Smiles, hugs, and kisses welcomed in the New Year as the band celebrated with Ray Charles’ “Night Time is The Right Time” and Mattison’s song “Bound for Glory”. Aretha Franklin’s “Spirit in The Dark” encored the evening and sent the North Florida faithful strutting into the night.

The band is due to release their first album in June of 2011 and has dates booked in April for Australia and New Zealand.

May the best of last year be the worst of this year.

Sat Eye Candy: Delaney & Bonnie

MUSIC FOR THE SAKE OF IT

While The Band have been gathering accolades as for their role as a primary influence on rock ‘n’ roll that followed, another group from the same era had almost as big an impact on the movers & shakers in the 60s & 70s (and subsequently since then). Delaney & Bonnie were a then-husband & wife rock ‘n’ soul revue that put the zap on Eric Clapton, George Harrison and scores of others. The undeniable groove and spirit of their homegrown, deliciously earthy music brought rock down from its big stages and reconnected some of the biggest players of the day with what it meant to make music for the sake of making music. This gift still reverberates in the work of Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Mofro, Lucero and countless others. We love giving credit to worthy ancestors at JamBase and wanted to offer up a smattering of their fine music to enrich your weekend. (Dennis Cook)

We begin with a corker featuring Clapton and Harrison along with the future rhythm section for Derek & The Dominoes.

While Dave Mason had the hit with this one, D & B do it great justice.

An early music video from the band.

The Black Crowes have taken this tune up in recent years.

There’s not much sexier than Bonnie’s wicked smile and joyous jiggling and Delaney’s slinky ass guitar work in this clip. The slide solo near the end is just ridiculous!

Another one from the same television appearance.

We conclude with a glimpse of Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett performing without one another. Delaney passed away in 2008 and Bonnie Bramlett continues to make great music today. Still, few fires that burned as briefly as theirs have been brighter or more warming to music as a whole.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy & Cheyenne Mize: Among the Gold

Among the Gold

Cheyenne Marie Mize and
Bonnie “Prince” Billy are releasing Among the Gold, their rendition of a collection
of 19th Century American parlor music handpicked by the duo, and it is available to enjoy for everyone for free
(download the whole album here!)

“In the summer of 2008,” describes Mize, “there was a place called Funtown where about 300 lucky folks saw the
first official coming-together of The Picket Line, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and myself. In preparation for this little event,
I met and began rehearsing with Will. After our first rehearsal together he asked me to join his touring band for the
following Spring.

I had had the idea behind Among the Gold brewing for some time- originally thinking it was going to be me
alone- to take some of my favorite very, very old tunes and record them. I offered the idea to Will, needing only a
mic and a good room for recording, and he offered me a mic and a good room for recording. I asked him to sing a
couple of the songs as duets as well. In the process we very much enjoyed singing together and we decided that
they would all make great duets so it became more of a collaborative effort, with him helping me to decide on the
rest of the tunes we would record, and helping me with instrumentation and arrangement decisions. And then it
was.”

Graham Nash Tribute w/ Prince Billy, Fleet Fox, Benson

GRASSROOTS RECORDS AND (((folkYEAH!))) ANNOUNCE

BE YOURSELF: A TRIBUTE TO GRAHAM NASH’S SONGS FOR BEGINNERS TO BE RELEASED MAY 25

ROBIN PECKNOLD, BONNIE ‘PRINCE’ BILLY, VETIVER, JOHNATHAN RICE

BRENDAN BENSON AND MORE CONTRIBUTE COVERS OF THE NASH CLASSICS

Legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash‘s emotionally charged solo debut Songs For Beginners was first released in 1971 and came on the heels of a temporary split with his CSN band mates, David Crosby and Stephen Stills, and a permanent break with his then-love, Joni Mitchell. The album was a hit, climbing to #15 on the Billboard chart and introducing the now-classic songs “Military Madness,” “Simple Man,” “Used To Be A King,” and the Top 40 single “Chicago.” Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash first rose to stardom with British Invasion hit-makers The Hollies. He went on to co-found the rock super groups Crosby, Stills & Nash and CSM&Y and remains active with both configurations. Throughout it all, Nash has pursued an acclaimed solo career, beginning with the 1971 gem Songs for Beginners. The songs from this classic have stood the almighty test of time and have been covered by a long list of music makers across the globe.

Now, flash forward to 2010, Nile Nash & Britt Govea of (((folkYEAH!))) presents have assembled an all star lineup of contemporary music leaders such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Robin Pecknold (of Fleet Foxes), Brendan Benson (of The Raconteurs), Vetiver, Alela Diane, Sleepy Sun, Mariee Sioux & Greg Weeks (from Espers), Port O Brien with The Papercuts, The Moore Brothers and Graham’s own daughter, Nile Nash. All of these contemporary artists have come together to honor and celebrate Graham’s first solo LP, Songs For Beginners. The artists put a unique spin on each song, making it his or her own while also honoring the timeless vibe of the original recordings. Some stay true to the arrangements that Graham and his Bay Area musician pals laid down in 1970, while others go for a completely fresh reinterpretation. Each track is sure to delight and introduce these already epic and timeless songs to a new generation of music lovers. This tribute LP, titled Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash’s Songs For Beginners, will be released via Grass Roots Records in Spring 2010.

All of the songs on this inspired collection were recorded between May and October of 2009. A few selections from Graham’s classic second solo release Wild Tales have also been recorded; Johnathan Rice handles “On The Line,” Tyson Vogel (of Two Gallants) takes “Hey You (Looking At The Moon)” to another place, and Jonathan Wilson (of Chris Robinson’s Wooden Family, Jenny Lewis, Elvis Costello) featuring an all star Laurel Canyon lineup recreates the now-classic Wild Tales jam “And So It Goes (Music Gets You High).”

In order to maintain the righteous tone of the original record and to also continue Graham’s lifelong commitment to educating our next generation, Graham, Nile, the artists, and Grass Roots Records are donating a portion of the proceeds from the record to Wavy Gravy’s Camp Winnarainbow. Through the use of music, acrobatics, games and production this circus and performing arts camp in the Mendocino woods of northern California teaches children and adults tools for building self-esteem, community, conflict resolution, communication and plain old merriment.

Be Yourself: A Tribute To Graham Nash’s Songs For Beginners will be released on May 25. A limited number 1000 editions of 180 gram vinyl will be pressed and will include a bonus 7 inch of the additional material. This will be available only through the Grassroots Records website, grassrootsrecordco.com. Pre-orders begin February 15 and will be fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis.

John Hiatt: The Open Road

JOHN HIATT TO RELEASE THE OPEN ROAD MARCH 2

John Hiatt

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt‘s brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter’s 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O’Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. “All the other years, my songs are about coming home,” Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he’s played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded “Thing Called Love.” On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and “Haulin’.” Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.

Dosh To Release Tommy 4/13

DOSH SET TO RELEASE FIFTH ALBUM, TOMMY, APRIL 13

Dosh

On April 13 Dosh (Martin Dosh) will release his fifth album on Anticon Records, titled Tommy.

In setting out to create this album Dosh had two goals in mind. First: Get loose. 2008′s Wolves & Wishes took a step in this direction by way of its guests – freewheelers like Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Odd Nosdam – but Dosh records are well-known for their impeccable arrangements. So much so that Andrew Bird used Wolves‘ “First Impossible” as the rhythmic backbone for a song on last year’s critically acclaimed Noble Beast LP.

Dosh’s second goal seemed to be in direct conflict with the first: To conceive yet thicker terrain for his already seething soundscapes. More drums. More vocals. And new to the Dosh catalog, lots of low end. Against all odds, Tommy skirts critical mass but stays organic, is never overwrought, and miraculously avoids becoming cluttered. Instead, this unique brand of maximalist, rhythm-driven post-rock sweeps lilting beauty, serious beats and even airy moments into its comely whirlwind.

Tommy Track Listing

1. Subtractions
2. Yer Face
3. Number 41
4. Town Mouse
5. Loud
6. Airlift
7. Country Road X
8. Call The Kettle
9. Nevermet
10. Gare de Lyon

Dosh is on tour now with Eyedea and Abilities; complete Dosh tour dates available here.
