CA Looking to NetQoS to Boost Capabilities in Cloud, System Management

CA is buying NetQoS for $200 million with the expectation that the company will enhance CAs manage capabilities in systems, networks, application performance and cloud computing. CA officials are expecting to combine NetQoS offerings with its own Spectrum and Wily products.

Eight Ways Nvidia, AMD and Other GPUs Boost HPC

Graphic processing units are finding a greater mainstream computing role, thanks in large part to the efforts of Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices in promoting the technology for general-purpose computing. GPUs from these vendors and others are cropping up in coprocessing roles in workstations from the likes of Dell and Hewlett-Packard, as well as HPC (high-performance computing) offerings from vendors such as Appro and Verari Systems. The benefits of GPUs, from their ability to run such tasks as video applications to the fact that they can hold significantly more processing cores than CPUs, dovetail with the increased demand from consumers and businesses for better performance around such diverse workloads as video, gaming and math-intensive applications. Officials with AMD, which bought ATI for $5.4 billion in 2006, announced in May that they were merging their processor and graphics businesses. Intel also is increasing the graphics capabilities of its processor technologies. ABI Research reports that 269 million handsets shipped in the second quarter of 2009, which Â“bodes wellÂ” for the second half the year. Nokia, LG and Samsung all showed market share growth, while Sony Ericsson, Motorola and RIM saw contractions.

Oracle has picked up another company and plans to integrate its technology into its database and middleware products. Oracle announced that it has bought GoldenGate Software for an undisclosed sum, adding that company to a list that includes the likes of Sun Microsystems and Virtual Iron.

Yahoo Buys Xoopit to Boost Photo-Sharing Versus Google, AOL

Yahoo scoops up Xoopit, a Web services specialist that combs through the glut of files, photos and videos floating in users’ Yahoo Mail and Google Gmail clouds and lets users post the content on other social networks and blogs to share with their friends.
