Singapore Air to be cautious about boosting capacity

Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest airline by market value, said it will be cautious about adding capacity as yields remain below pre-crisis levels.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” Chief Executive Officer Chew Choon Seng said today. Singapore Air, which said advance ticket bookings are “encouraging,” aims to increase capacity by 2% in the fiscal year ending in March.

Singapore export growth accelerates, boosting economic rebound

Singapore’s exports rose at the fastest pace since 2005 in April as a recovering global economy lifted shipments by electronic makers.

Non-oil domestic exports climbed 29.4% from a year earlier, after a revised 25.4% gain in March, the trade promotion agency said in a statement in Singapore today. The median forecast of 10 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was for an increase of 25.3%.

Following much speculation recently in the German press, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced at a press conference on Tuesday that a 500 troops would be deployed to Afghanistan to join the around 4,300 already stationed there.

Microsoft Acquires Opalis Software, Boosting Data Center Automation

Microsoft announced the acquisition of Opalis Software, whose products help automate and streamline workflow processes within the data center, on Dec. 11 for undisclosed terms. Opalis’s software will be integrated into Microsoft System Center. Data center automation is of increasing importance to many customers within the enterprise attempting to manage an ever-increasing number of data centers. How the acquisition will affect Opalis dealings with companies such as Amazon.com are unknown.

Intel, AMD, IBM Boosting Chip Core Count

Intels Dec. 2 demonstration of its experimental 48-core processor is the latest step by chip makers to increase the performance and efficiency of their products by growing the number of cores that can be put onto a single silicon chip. Intel’s single-chip cloud computer was created by Intel Lab’s Tera-scale Computing Research Program, which is working to create chips with hundreds of cores. Other chip makers also are driving their core count up, from rival AMD, which is planning a 12-core processor in 2010, to IBM and Sun Microsystems. Intel is planning an eight-core Nehalem EX Xeon server processor for early 2010. Core count also is going up in graphics chips, which vendors like AMD and Nvidia are pushing more into mainstream computing. This slideshow shows some current and future multicore processors.
