Bosnian envoy receives death threats

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Ambassador to Spain Željana Zovko has received a threatening letter, saying she is a “Croatian terrorist” and that she will “be blown up”.

Names of certain Mohamed Nezirović and Faik Dizdarević are mentioned in the letter, among other things.

EU abolishes visas for Bosnia and Albania

EU interior ministers voted today to abolish visas for the citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom assessed that this is a historic day for the two countries.

Legal counsel of former Member of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Presidency Ejup Ganić’s has stated that his client is thinking suing Serbia. Ganić’s lawyer Damir Arnaut has assessed that his client spent five months in London “as a hostage of abuse of the British legal system for political purposes“.

Bosnia-Herzegovina Prime Minister Nikola Špirić said that the confirmation of Kosovo’s independence by the UN could cause a reaction by the Republic of Srpska. He said that with a confirmation of Kosovo’s independence, the UN would “make the first move towards the road to independence for the Republic of Srpska (RS) and many other states that want independence.”

Deputy PM meets with RS premier

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić met with the Republic of Srpska (RS) Prime Minister Milorad Dodik in Banja Luka on Sunday. Dačić said after the meeting that, as side that signed the Dayton Agreement, Serbia was not only a guarantor of the Serb entity, RS, “but of the entire Bosnia-Herzegovina”, and pointed out that Serbia-RS cooperation based on the Special Parallel Relations Agreement was efficient.

45 arrested in police raids in Bosnia

Bosnian police arrested 45 people in a large operation on Tuesday, the state prosecution stated. The operation was implemented on the order of the Bosnia-Herzegovina prosecution, and it was aimed at uncovering organized crime suspects, especially related to the drug trade and the sale of weapons and military equipment.

Bosnian FM: Relations stagnating

Bosnia’s FM Sven Alkalaj says that concrete progresses in improving ties between his country and Serbia was regularly conditioned by the political situation. “We think that Serbia’s interest in the welfare of Serbs who live in Bosnia-Herzegovina is legitimate, however, what’s worrisome is the way and methods with which Serbia is trying to influence the issues which are originally and exclusively interior-political issues of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” the FM told Belgrade daily Blic.

Former Bosnian general dies

Bosnia-Herzegovina Army General Rasim Delić died this morning in his apartment in Sarajevo, Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina TV reported. The cause of death is unknown, but the media are saying that the former general had been seeing doctors recently.

RS president on possible constitutional changes

RS President Rajko Kuzmanović said that it is unrealistic to expect any radical changes to be made to the Bosnia-Herzegovina Constitution. “This is an election year, a pre-election campaign, and judging by the approaches of most politicians, it has already started. Every opportunity is being used to promote parties and to, most of the time without argument and with insults, criticize political opponents,” the president of the Serb republic in Bosnia (RS) was quoted as saying.

Bosnia: Police raid Wahhabi village

Police in Bosnia-Herzegovina this Tuesday blocked a village near the town of Brčko where Wahhabis reside. Bosnia’s law enforcement and various other agencies officers detained more than ten Wahhabis, including women, and brought them in for questioning, reports said.

Bosnian FM: Srebrenica resolution big step for Serbia

Bosnia-Herzegovina FM Sven Alkalaj said on Monday in Podgorica that by adopting a resolution on Srebrenica, Serbia would take a great step for the region. Alkalaj, who is on a official visit to Montenegro, told the press that what Serbia intends to do will be a great and important step for the region.

Đukanović: No alternative to whole Bosnia

Montenegrin PM Milo Đukanović thinks that a whole Bosnia-Herzegovina does not have an alternative. He said in Washington on Thursday while giving a lecture at a university that “any secession idea could have tragic consequences to stability of the region”.

Inzko “appreciates Tadić’s initiative”

International High Representative in Bosnia-Herzegovina Valentin Inzko said that he appreciates Boris Tadić’s initiative for the Srebrenica resolution. “When the adoption of the Srebrenica declaration is in question, I think that it would be a very important and large step towards restoring and implementing full trust and reconciliation between the two countries,” he told daily Večernje novosti.

Bosnia joins UNSC as non-permanent member

On Jan. 1, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lebanon, Nigeria, Gabon and Brazil joined the UN Security Council as new non-permanent members. Their mandates will last through 2011.
