Broken Bells: First Tour Ever

BROKEN BELLS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER TOUR

James Mercer and Danger Mouse Hit The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego

Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart

Broken Bells

In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes), James Mercer and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells‘ first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities.

In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band, Broken Bells has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception: Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff” and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”

The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin.

Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.

Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.

Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh): Public Enemy, Broken Social

NEW GATHERING OF REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TALENT HITS NORTH CAROLINA

The Hopscotch Music Festival is scheduled for September 9-11, 2010, in downtown Raleigh, NC with 120 bands in 10 venues over three days. Tickets go on sale Thursday, April 1, at www.etix.com and www.hopscotchmusicfest.com.

The festival will be headlined by two nights in Raliegh City Plaza, which opened last fall. Panda Bear and Broken Social Scene will headline Friday, Sept. 10, with support from Triangle favorites The Rosebuds. Public Enemy will headline with a rare full-band set on Saturday, Sept. 11. Los Angeles trio No Age and Raleigh’s The Love Language will open. More than 110 bands will be spread between nine clubs throughout the festival’s three days. A sample of those bands includes:

Public Enemy

Tortoise
Lucero
9th Wonder
Akron/Family
Marissa Nadler
Harvey Milk
Fucked Up
Javelin
Richard Buckner
Megafaun
Kylesa
Atlas Sound
Harlem
Bear in Heaven

Carefully assembled by Hopscotch Director Greg Lowenhagen and Curator and Independent Weekly Music Editor Grayson Currin, the lineup spotlights the core of the Triangle’s rich music scene by putting it on the same stages as some of the world’s best bands.

“Several music festivals in the Triangle make it clear how strong the talent in North Carolina is, and they do it better and better each year,” Currin says. “We don’t want to replace that. Rather, we want to expand on it by showing that this area has the caliber of bands and listeners that can support a big music festival.”

Lowenhagen hatched the idea for Hopscotch after moving to Raleigh following stints in Austin and Chicago, cities known for their support of live music festivals. He was surprised that no events in the Triangle regularly brought in a fleet of bands from outside of town. “When I returned from being away, I realized the Triangle, with its strong music heritage and abundance of local talent, seemed ready for a different, more nationally recognizable festival to call its own,” he says.

TICKETS
Admission for Hopscotch Music Festival is designed to suit a wide range of fans. Individual tickets for the shows in Raleigh City Plaza – on Friday, Sept. 10, featuring Panda Bear, Broken Social Scene and The Rosebuds; on Saturday, Sept. 11, featuring Public Enemy, No Age and The Love Language – cost $30 each. For $45, fans can buy a wristband that allows entry into all nine festival clubs for all three days. A limited number of $85 wristbands gain fans admission to both City Plaza shows and all clubs, saving $20 off of face value. A very limited number of $120 VIP wristbands are available. Those wristbands include skip-the-line access to all shows and a VIP festival kickoff party on Thursday, Sept. 9. Broken promises

Several countries will fail to make good on promises of aid this year

IN 2005, amid big anti-globalisation protests, leaders of the world’s main donor countries pledged to give more in foreign aid in 2010. Of the 21 members of the OECD “Development Assistance Committee”, all 15 European Union countries agreed to increase their net aid to at least 0.51% of GDP this year, from 0.35% in 2004. Several of the most generous givers set much more ambitious targets. America and Japan were more circumspect in their promises. On Wednesday February 17th, new 2010 aid forecasts from the OECD presented a mixed picture. Nine EU countries are expected to meet or exceed the 0.51% minimum, but Germany, France and Italy will not. Official aid will total $107.4 billion this year, 35% more than in 2004, but $21 billion less than was promised in 2005.

Broken Social Scene: New Album

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM MAY 4

Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene will be releasing their new, as-yet-untitled album May 4 on Arts & Crafts.

Co-produced by the band and Tortoise‘s John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, with additional recording at Giant Studio and The Schvitz Studio in Toronto, the new album is the follow up to their acclaimed self-titled record, released in 2005.

The new record was written and arranged by the Canadian collective’s current lineup, which includes Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg and Lisa Lobsinger.

The album also features guest turns by a host of Social Scene alumni: Leslie Feist, Amy Millan and Evan Cranley of Stars, Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw of Metric, Jason Collett, Ohad Benchetrit of Do Make Say Think and Years, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Leon Kingstone and Julie Penner.

With their new album, the first following the acclaimed Broken Social Scene Presents… series, the band decided it was time to try something new. As a core six-piece who had spent most of 2007 and 2008 on the road, Drew, Canning, Spearin, Whiteman, Goldberg and Peroff spent early 2009 working on new material in Toronto. The pairing down of the band’s massive personnel list for the first time proved extremely fruitful; they created spacious songs written as a band by a band, resulting in more cohesive, melody-driven compositions than previous BSS outputs.

They then decamped to Chicago, recording outside of Toronto for the first time, which allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the recording process. In producer McEntire – a musical hero for many of the band’s members – they found a fresh perspective on their own sound, which continued to fuel the creative process, resulting in nearly 40 songs written in and out of the studio.

Broken Social Scene will also be playing select dates around their new album’s release.

A broken resolution

The government should let the courts decide the fate of Japan’s flagship airline

THE run-up to New Year is a time to tidy up loose ends in Japan so that in January everything starts afresh. For a fleeting moment, it looked as if the government was doing just that when, after months of indecisiveness, it hinted on December 30th that Japan Airlines might be headed for bankruptcy.

But after the shares slumped by 24% to an all-time low on the same day, ministers lost their nerve over sanctioning what could be one of Japan’s biggest corporate failures. Despite strong differences of opinion within the government a new support package was cobbled together over the holiday weekend, doubling the state-run Development Bank of Japan’s credit line to JAL, as the airline is called, to 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion). …
