BROKEN BELLS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER TOUR
James Mercer and Danger Mouse Hit The Road Beginning May 18 in San Diego
Debut Album Moves Nearly 50K First Week, Peaks at #1 on iTunes Album Chart
Broken Bells |
In the wake of their new band’s self titled Columbia Records debut charting at #7 and selling just shy of 50,000 in its first week (and reaching as high as #1 on iTunes), James Mercer and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse have confirmed Broken Bells‘ first ever tour. The dates commence May 18 in San Diego and will include stops in 16 North American cities.
In addition to being the year’s highest charting debut album by an alternative/rock band, Broken Bells has met with an insanely and unanimously positive critical reception: Rolling Stone has hailed the album as “the year’s coolest left field pop disc” in a 4-star lead review, while Wired described it as “crazy good stuff” and Entertainment Weekly praised it as a “subtly savory sonic morsel.”
The mere handful of shows the band has played to date have fared likewise, selling out as quickly as tickets could be processed, and dazzling crowds in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Austin.
Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Danger Mouse.
Each a long-time fan of the other’s work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Broken Bells was pared down from more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded to the 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.
Mercer and Burton will continue to work as a band in the future.

The Show Must Go On For The Disco Biscuits
The news of Jon Gutwillig’s broken wrist was announced this morning on Facebook, but here is the official word from discobiscuits.com:
Last night following the show Jon Gutwillig injured his wrist in an accident. He received immediate medical attention and it was determined that he would need surgery to which he is having this afternoon in New York. Though we expect a speedy recovery, we will need to make the following adjustments to our 5 upcoming shows this weekend:
1. Tonight’s show in Boston WILL take place. Though Jon will not be there, we plan on still rocking out with everyone at the House of Blues. Expect a big party tonight in Boston with special guests and lots of musical treats. Since the band is not at full strength, we are making tonight’s show a free show. Refunds will be available for any ticket purchaser at point of purchase. If you used cash to purchase your tickets, remember to hold onto your ticket stub. PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW YOUR TICKET TO GET INTO TONIGHT’S SHOW BUT YOU WILL STILL BE REFUNDED.
2. Tomorrow night’s show at the Wellmont Theatre is postponed. Because of the circumstances, we though it would be best to do this show later this spring. Details to be announced soon.
3. The Brooklyn Bowl show WILL take place on Sunday. Tom Hamilton is going to fill in for Jon and we are going to make it an extra special night to celebrate the launch of BPM.
4. We will be performing at Ultra Music Festival. We will have an announcement of the lineup for that show next week.
5. The Tractorbeam show will also go ahead as planned. We will have an announcement of the lineup for that show next week.

Broken promises
Several countries will fail to make good on promises of aid this year
IN 2005, amid big anti-globalisation protests, leaders of the world’s main donor countries pledged to give more in foreign aid in 2010. Of the 21 members of the OECD “Development Assistance Committee”, all 15 European Union countries agreed to increase their net aid to at least 0.51% of GDP this year, from 0.35% in 2004. Several of the most generous givers set much more ambitious targets. America and Japan were more circumspect in their promises. On Wednesday February 17th, new 2010 aid forecasts from the OECD presented a mixed picture. Nine EU countries are expected to meet or exceed the 0.51% minimum, but Germany, France and Italy will not. Official aid will total $107.4 billion this year, 35% more than in 2004, but $21 billion less than was promised in 2005.

A broken resolution
The government should let the courts decide the fate of Japan’s flagship airline
THE run-up to New Year is a time to tidy up loose ends in Japan so that in January everything starts afresh. For a fleeting moment, it looked as if the government was doing just that when, after months of indecisiveness, it hinted on December 30th that Japan Airlines might be headed for bankruptcy.
But after the shares slumped by 24% to an all-time low on the same day, ministers lost their nerve over sanctioning what could be one of Japan’s biggest corporate failures. Despite strong differences of opinion within the government a new support package was cobbled together over the holiday weekend, doubling the state-run Development Bank of Japan’s credit line to JAL, as the airline is called, to 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion). …
