R.I.P. GOTV’s Michael J. Potashnick

GATHERING OF THE VIBES LOSES ITS VOICE

On Monday, January 10, 2011, the Gathering of
the Vibes
festival lost its crowd-rallying, on-stage “Voice
of the Vibes,” Co-M.C. Michael J. Potashnick. The news of his sudden passing sent ripples throughout the
New England arts and music community. A beloved friend to countless people, the spirit and memories of Michael J.
Potashnick will not fade away.

Organizers have announced that two gatherings will take place to honor and celebrate the life of the 52-year-old
producer who died from pneumonia. The first gathering, organized by the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival, will
take place Sunday, February 13 from 2-5 p.m. at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, 153 Main Street,
Burlington, VT. Friends and family are invited to join together for an afternoon of storytelling, remembrance and
celebration. Click here
to RSVP to the Burlington, VT event.

Hosted by Gathering of the Vibes, the second celebration will take place Sunday, February 20 on the campus of the
University of Bridgeport’s Arnold Bernard Center from 3-9 p.m. The Bridgeport gathering will include live music and
dedications by some of Michael’s favorite artists.

Those planning to attend the Bridgeport, CT event are requested to RSVP via the “Michael Potashnick Celebration”
Facebook page by
clicking here. Those
wanting to make contributions in Michael’s memory are asked to kindly donate to his favorite charities: The United
Way and the SoNo Arts Festival in Norwalk, CT.

Though Michael had been involved with Gathering of the Vibes every year since its inception in 1997, he also was
like family to much of the New England arts and music community. He was an integral part of the Lake Champlain
Maritime Festival, the SoNo Arts Celebration, Bridgeport’s Polka Dot Playhouse, Burlington Discover Jazz Festival,
Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and the All Good Music Festival in West Virginia.

“Michael was family,” said Ken Hays, founder of the Vibes. “He exemplified what the Vibes means to so
many, reminding us from his spot on center-stage of the love we have to offer each other, and that through music,
we can truly see the light that brings harmony and balance to the world. We will miss him tremendously.”

Those who would like to contribute stories and photos to Michael Potashnick’s memorial services are asked to
submit medium/high-resolution photographs (preferably in JPEG format) and stories (1-2 paragraphs) through a special memorial
website
, or email them directly
to mjpmemories@gmail.com.

Dispatch Bandmates To Play Benefit In Boston (12/10)

ACOUSTIC MUSIC FOR GOOD CAUSES

Dispatch

State RadioChad Stokes’ former Dispatch bandmate Brad Corrigan is among the latest artist additions to Calling All Crows’ 3rd Annual Benefit Show on December 10th to commemorate Human Rights Day at the House of Blues in Boston. Also joining the lineup is singer/songwriter Erin Coughlin, who collaborated with Stokes on State Radio’s 2004 acoustic EP Simmer Kane.

A limited number of tickets to the show remain and are available now via Ticketmaster and without ticketing fees at the Orpheum Theater Box Office.

Corrigan and Coughlin join an all-star lineup of acoustic musicians that kicked off the Chad Stokes & Friends Tour this past Wednesday night at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, making stops in Toronto, Buffalo, Burlington, D.C., and Philadelphia before the finale in Boston. Previously announced artists include siblings Matt Embree of Rx Bandits and Lauren Coleman of Pebaluna as well as Stokes’ independent Ruff Shod Records labelmates Bonnie Paine of Elephant Revival and The White Buffalo.

All shows will feature musicians performing stripped down versions of both original material and covers, performed solo and as collaborations. As in previous years, Stokes is expected to pull from both the State Radio and Dispatch catalogs. He also plans to debut songs off his upcoming solo record, due out in early 2011.

Proceeds will benefit Stokes’ service organization, Calling All Crows, which he co-founded with his partner and tour manager Sybil Gallagher. Calling All Crows works to mobilize musicians and their fans to empower women around the world.

In nearly every city on the tour, musicians will join fans in pre-show service projects organized by Calling All Crows aimed at empowering women. From Global Write-a- thons with Amnesty International to preparing a holiday meal for pregnant refugee and low-income women and their mentors, everyone involved with the tour will have the opportunity to lift up and celebrate women along the way.

Leland Sundries: Fall Tour/1st EP

ONE OF THE FRESHEST DEBUTS IN ’10 TOURS EAST COAST

“Leland Sundries singer/picker Nick Loss-Eaton’s the-Band-meets-Lou-Reed approach mates gnawing electric guitar and old-time acoustic six-string, banjo, and harmonica melodies with dry-witted, drawling, modern-day ennui.” -Boston Phoenix

Leland Sundries

Brooklyn indie-Americana music project Leland Sundries released their debut, The Apothecary EP, this past Tuesday, October 5 on upstart label L’Echiquier Records. Leland Sundries is lead by resonator and harmonica-playing songwriter Nick Loss-Eaton. Leland Sundries has been compared to James McMurtry, Richard Buckner, AA Bondy, Elvis Perkins, Son Volt, and Silver Jews, and Chuck Prophet has called Leland Sundries’ music “great wordsmith stuff.”

The Apothecary EP was recorded at the Creamery studio, under the Pulaski Bridge on the Brooklyn-Queens border and instrumentation includes resonator guitar, banjo, accordion, vintage synthesizer, slide guitar, and Rhodes. Laura Minor, who xlr8r compared to Lucinda Williams, appears on guest vocals on the EP’s wistful closing waltz.

The project has played in eight states in its year-long existence, sometimes in electric garage band guise and sometimes as a resonator and harmonica show. The tour for the EP begins tomorrow in Massachusetts.
