The strikes at British Airways: Maintaining altitude

BA’s cabin staff appear to be fighting a losing battle

THE share price says it all. Since the end of last year, shares in strike-hit British Airways have risen in value by nearly a third (see chart). For all the apocalyptic headlines the airline is currently attracting, investors are increasingly confident that BA will win its battle with the cabin staff’s union, Unite, and that when the smoke clears, little if any long-term damage will have been done to its resilient brand.

There are plenty of reasons why Willie Walsh, BA’s combative boss, can look to the future with some confidence. First of all, the notion being peddled in much of the British media that customers who are quite sensibly avoiding BA now will never return is nonsense. The passengers that BA depends on most are those who regularly fly business class across the Atlantic. It is a pretty safe bet that most of them sympathise with the action management is taking to get the airline’s out-of-kilter costs closer to those in the rest of the industry. …

Black Crowes: Cabin Fever DVD

A GLIMPSE INTO THE INTIMATE RECORDING PROCESS BEHIND LATEST ALBUM

The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes will release their new DVD, Cabin Fever on November 24, 2009 on the bands own label, Silver Arrow. The DVD includes footage from the recording sessions that ultimately became their critically acclaimed new album, Before the FrostÂ…Until the Freeze (JamBase review).

The innovative technique of inviting fans into the studio to become part of the process during recording is a rare experience and prudently, the band filmed the sessions. Before the FrostÂ…Until the Freeze was recorded over a series of five nights in front of an intimate studio audience at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. The DVD of those sessions, Cabin Fever, takes that experience one step further by allowing viewers to see behind the scenes footage of both the recording and songwriting sessions, along with interaction between the band and the audience. The DVD gives fans that didn’t have the opportunity to attend the ability to feel the experience firsthand.

Exclusively on the DVD will be Crowes original “Little Lizzie Mae,” as well as covers of The Velvet Underground’s “Oh Sweet Nuthin’” and Fred Neil’s “Dolphins.” The DVD will also include the tracks “Aimless Peacock,” “Good Morning Captain,” and “Appaloosa,” among others from Before the FrostÂ…Until the Freeze.

Chris Robinson, who conceived the concept of both Before the FrostÂ…Until the Freeze and Cabin Fever, says, “I think we fulfilled a musical commitment to continue on the golden road of artistic independence. Approaching 20 years into our careers, we still are ambitious enough to push ourselves to create something unique that we have never done before.”

Beer Metaphor Becomes Frosty-Cold Reality

There’s a relatively recent political metaphor that is about to become a reality, and become etched in the history books much like the ring left…

British Airways jet evacuated

Passengers escape down emergency slides as flight BA288 prepares for take-off in Phoenix, Arizona

Hundreds of passengers have been evacuated from a British Airways jet after smoke filled the cabin just before take-off.

The Boeing 747 had been preparing to depart for Heathrow from Phoenix Airport in Arizona this morning when passengers reported an acrid smell. All on board escaped down the plane’s emergency slides.

A passenger on flight BA288, Corinne Casazza, said: “There was this really strong smell of fuel and I could hear people panicking behind me. They were upset and finding it hard to breathe because of the smell.

“People were coughing and choking and those with children were very worried and so they brought them to the front where they could breathe.

“We asked if we could open the doors but were told we couldn’t because we were still moving.

“There was a lot of pushing and shoving – everyone just wanted to get off the plane.”

Another passenger said the cabin filled with smoke and people had to cover their faces because of the smell.

“It was horrific – it smelt like rubber burning, or something like that,” she said.

No serious injuries were reported but about 15 people had minor cuts and bruises

A BA spokesman said: “The plane was being pushed back from the stand when there were reports of smoke. A decision was taken to evacuate the aircraft following the usual procedures.”

Fire crews found smoke in the cabin and in the cargo compartment, but no fire was discovered, said a spokeswoman for Phoenix fire department. Safety officials believed the smoke and smell were caused by an electrical problem.

BA has organised hotel rooms for the stranded passengers while engineers examine the plane.
