Kaki King: Junior Out 4/13 Signs To Rounder

KAKI KING SIGNS TO ROUNDER RECORDS, JUNIOR OUT APRIL 13

Kaki King

Singer & guitarist extraordinaire Kaki King has signed with Rounder Records. Named a “Guitar God” by Rolling Stone, King has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of the 2007 film Into the Wild, and also performed on the Foo Fighters‘ 2007 Grammy winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

As with her previous album, 2008′s Dreaming of Revenge, Junior was produced by Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith), but unlike each of King’s previous efforts – where she recorded all the instruments herself – for Junior she enlisted help from multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan and drummer Jordan Perlson. King wrote each of the album’s 11 songs.

Following her previously announced European dates, King will spend the Spring in the U.S., hitting New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Nashville, Chicago and Los Angeles, among many others.

Crash Kings | 12.13 | Cambridge

Words & Images by: Andrew Bruss

Crash Kings :: 12.13.09 :: Middle East :: Cambridge, MA

Crash Kings :: 12.13 :: Boston

Crash Kings won over the Middle East Downstairs even though the sold out crowd was not their own. The keys/drum/bass trio was the first of three acts slated to perform on a snowy Sunday evening in Cambridge. With the odds against them, Crash Kings performed a 45-minute set that rocked to its core, effectively turning a crowd of strangers into fans.

The bulk of the set consisted of material off their self-titled debut, but they played a few songs that have yet to be released on any proper studio product. Bassist Mike Beliveau and drummer Jason Morris were the real core of the experience as the rhythm section functioned in perfect unison. Their ability to follow each other made you wonder if these guys slept and breathed on the same cycles.

Frontman Tony Beliveau (brother of Mike) was the most active onstage, holding down vocal duties as well as keyboards. Although his singing felt a bit forced, he made up for it with his instrumental work. His keyboard featured a steel extension that acted like a whammy bar, bending the notes and allowing his rig to play the role of electric guitar.

Beliveau’s guitar simulation was most apparent during their set closing cover of Black Sabbath‘s “War Pigs.” Without a guitar player, the leads made famous by guitarist Tony Iommi were played by Tony Beliveau, who botched the vocals in the second verse but nailed the riffs, even capturing some of Iommi’s dark tone.

Crash Kings borrow from a lot of the same resurgent rock we’ve heard over the past decade and do their best to make it their own. Unfortunately, their sole studio product fails to capture the power they bring to the stage. But, as an opening act who won over another group’s sold out crowd, it’s fair to say their live show is the best asset they have to work with.

Crash Kings tour dates available here.

Passion Pit | 12.10.09 | S.F.

Words by: Lindsay Colip | Images by: Steven Walter

Passion Pit :: 12.10.09 :: Mezzanine :: San Francisco, CA

Passion Pit :: 12.10 :: San Francisco

What a difference a year makes. Once Passion Pit took the stage at Mezzanine, it was obvious that the last year of touring and music making had paid off. Michael Angelakos (lead vocals, keys), Ian Hultquist (guitar, keys), Ayad Al Adhamy (samples, synth), Jeff Apruzzese (bass, synth bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums) make up the energetic, enterprising electronic collective from Cambridge, Massachusetts. However, it wasn’t always a five-piece ensemble. Passion Pit started out with Angelakos making his sweetheart a Valentine’s Day CD (Chunk of Change EP) back in 2007. From there he decided to disperse the EP amongst students and friends at Emerson College. It didn’t take very long for people to catch onto his infectious sound, energetic voice, and memorable lyrics. Angelakos then teamed up with some fellow musicians and started touring and amassing a huge following. In early 2009, they put out their first full album, Manners, as a follow up to Angelakos’ 2008 EP.

When I first heard the EP, I was hooked. Every single song is upbeat, fun, danceable, and approachable – perfect for a pre-party or a late night dance session and always a guaranteed good time. When I found out the guys were playing at Sasquatch! (JamBase review) last spring I was beyond excited and ready to get loose. Unfortunately, they ended up playing in the middle of a sweltering hot day on a huge outdoor stage. Needless to say, a LOT was lost from this performance. Angelakos’ voice was completely strained (almost gone actually), and because I consider his high pitched, spirited voice the most important instrument of all, the songs suffered.

This summer I was able to catch them again at Melt! Festival in Germany (JamBase review) and thankfully, they had been slated at the perfect time slot and stage. They were the last performance on the last night in a dance tent. This was a great performance but it was clear they were still learning how to be a unit, how to be seamless onstage.

Passion Pit :: 12.10 :: San Francisco

Finally, at Mezzanine, a whole new band emerged. They looked completely put together, cohesive, fashion forward even. The earlier performances seemed like a group of highly talented technology/music geeks thrown together in a bit of a disheveled mess. Now, they are 100-percent Passion Pit. Angelakos sounded fantastic. His voice was pitch perfect – not strained, never wavering, very solid. Each of the gajillion instruments was on point, as well – shakers, bells, various percussion toys, clap tracks and more. Speaking of their clap track, it honestly has to be one of the best in the business. They have that DIALED IN. They looked like they were having a riot up there, too. Dancing around to their own songs, silently miming the words while Angelakos belted them out. Really fantastic.

The venue was stunning for these guys as well – intimate, danceable, dark. They opened up with “Make Like” and immediately hooked the crowd. They continued on with “Little Secrets,” “Moth’s Wings,” “The Reeling,” “Let Your Love Grow Strong,” “To Kingdom Come,” and mega-hit “Sleepyhead.” “Smile Upon Me” was a huge treat. They’ve made the live version so much better than the original. Each time I’ve heard it they’ve added more complexity to it and at Mezzanine they absolutely blew it out of the water. I’d go see them every time they come to town JUST to hear the live version of “Smile Upon Me.” They closed with “Better Things” to a seriously amped-up crew of ultra-trendy 20-something San Franciscans.

Overall, this was one fun dance party. They truly looked confident and happy onstage. Manners is a good glimpse of where they’re headed as a band, and I hope they continue to produce fun, smile provoking, foot tapping music. In a time where things are a little uncertain and tough, Passion Pit gives us a much-needed release. More music, please!

DELTA SPIRIT’S NEW ALBUM TITLED HISTORY FROM BELOW

EXPECTED SPRING 2010 / WINTER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

Yale Top 10 Quotes Of 2009

The Ivy Leaguers at Yale University have compiled a list of the Top 10 Quotes of 2009, and it appears Kanye West and hot-headed South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson spouted off some of the year’s most buzzworthy phrases.

“It reveals that things are so polarized now,” said Fred Shapiro, editor of the Yale Book of Quotations. [...]

Ray White and Ike Willis Reunite with Project/Object

PROJECT/OBJECT PEFORMING THE MUSIC OF FRANK ZAPPA REUNITES

FORMER ZAPPA ALUMNI IKE WILLIS & RAY WHITE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS

Project/Object

For the first time in 25 years Project/Object will have, as special guests, Ike Willis and Ray White. These amazing and unique voices were clearly favorites of Frank Zappa‘s, as he recorded and toured with one or both of them from 1976 till his last tour in 1988. Together, they created some of the most memorable performances of Frank Zappa’s music, and Project/Object will bring them together for the fans; performing songs they are each known for, as well as songs from classic Zappa albums they recorded together.

Ike Willis is the legendary 10-plus year Zappa vocalist and guitarist whose career with Frank began in the role of “Joe” on the quintessential Zappa album, Joe’s Garage. He toured with Zappa’s band in 1978 and appeared on every Zappa tour thereafter; and almost every album until Frank Zappa’s tragic early death. Ike played an integral role in Zappa’s final tour in 1988, which some say was his most historic tour, and one that he richly represented to his fan base with several live recordings.

Ray White is a soul vocalist and rock and blues guitarist, best-known as a member of Frank Zappa’s touring ensembles. He was drafted into Zappa’s band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals, forming a memorable vocal harmony partnership with Ike Willis on later tours in 1980 and 1984. He participated on the albums Zappa in New York, Joe’s Garage, Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is, and more. Ray has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW and Umphrey’s McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and more recently, in summer 2007 White joined Dweezil Zappa as a special guest for the Zappa Plays Zappa Tour.

One of Frank’s greatest skills was his incredible sixth sense in identifying something magical in each of the musicians he hired. Recognizing this – Project/Object continues it’s singular mission to present the music as it was recorded – but also to respect and develop the creative “live” aspect that Zappa always pushed his band towards.

The members of Project/Object feel that Frank Zappa is one of the 20th Century’s greatest and most important composers, and they are on a mission to bring his music to the masses by faithfully recreating the live Zappa experience. The band strives to stay true to Frank’s vision of constantly challenging the musicians and the audiences.

In addition to Willis and White, many other Zappa alumni have performed with the band including Napoleon Murphy Brock, Jimmy Carl Black, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Denny Walley, Mike Keneally, Arthur Barrow, Ed Mann, Roy Estrada, Billy Mundi, and even Al Malkin. Other notable artists they’ve collaborated with include Phish‘s Jon Fishman, Capt. Beefheart/Jeff Buckley guitarist Gary Lucas, Chuck Garvey, Al Schnier, and Jim Loughlin of moe., New York City big band leader and “Zappologist” Ed Palermo, and Dweezil Zappa drummer Jerry Cucurullo.

In every new market they visit, Project/Object converts the curious into dedicated fans. They want to remind old Zappa fans of the way it used to be and let younger fans, that never experienced a Zappa show, see and hear the way it was.

MacarthurCook shareholders approve recapitalisation plans by AMP, others

Shareholders of Macarthurcook Industrial Trust (MCRT.SI) approved a rescue package that means a group of investors led by Australia’s AMP (AMP.AXC) will buy new shares in the firm at a heavy discount, said a source who attended an extraordinary general meeting of the REIT today.

The rescue package had been opposed by Cambridge Industrial Trust (CMIT.SI), a Singapore real estate investment trust which owns nearly 10% of Macarthurcook. Cambridge is managed by a unit of National Australia Bank (NAB.AX).

BAY AREA HIP HOP PROVOCATEURS RISE ANEW

Themselves

Seven months after the release of theFREEhoudini – the celebrated mixtape that announced Themselves‘ return (for more pop over here) – Doseone and Jel dropped CrownsDown, a careful and vicious exhibition of mastered rap tactics and sampling ethics, on October 27 on Anticon. Themselves’ third album proper has been gestating in the gut of this seminal group for some time. It’s both a return to form and a honing of what’s come before (Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Deep Puddle) – both the opus that these lionhearted two were always meant to make, and the album that their hip-hop-obsessed teenaged selves always hoped to hear.

Themselves hits the road next week to bring the live incarnation of their rag ‘n’ bone genius to the stage.
