Camp Bisco Remix Contest

A CHANCE TO WIN SET TIME AT CAMP BISCO REWORKING TUNES BY
BISCUITS, KING BRITT, BASSNECTAR AND BLACK SEEDS

The Black Seeds

URB.com and MixMatchMusic have teamed up with Camp Bisco 9 for the Second Annual Remix Contest. This year will feature four different artists and songs to remix. The contest began May 19 with tracks from event hosts The Disco Biscuits, Bassnectar, King Britt, and The Black Seeds (Editor’s note: who put out a really sensational album last year). One grand-prize winner will be awarded a one-hour set on the stage of this year’s Camp Bisco.

MCP Presents President Jonathan Fordin said, “Camp Bisco has always been about interesting on-stage collaborations and engaging our audience in new ways. With the remix contest we can honor the traditions and techniques of electronic music that the festival focuses on.”

A new addition to the remix contest team for this year is the Remix Wizard, provided by MixMatchMusic, which includes easy-to-use web-based remixing tools for beginners. “Involving fans in the creative process through remixing is one of the best ways to make the artist – fan connection stronger,” said Charles Feinn, CEO and co-founder of MixMatchMusic. “And, it’s exciting and also humbling to know that we’re playing a part in making those connections happen.” MixMatchMusic’s popular and versatile iPhone app builder MobBase will be used for the first ever Camp Bisco iPhone app.

How to participate
1) Choose a song to remix, and open up that Remix Wizard widget
2) Download song stems. It’s free and easy.
3) Create your remix using the stems and any additional music or beats that either you have created or have a creative commons license for. You can also make your mix online by clicking on the MixMaker button of the widget.
4) Upload an MP3 of your remix via the same widget you used to download the stems. Enter as many Camp Bisco remixes as you like.
5) Share the track with your friends and ask them to comment, rate, playlist your mix and share it with their friends on twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and their blogs, etc.
6) Once you have finished and uploaded your remix, judges from Camp Bisco and URB.com will select a winner for each track and one grand-prize winner.
7) Contest ends June 21, 2010. Winners will be notified by June 28, 2010.

Each remix will have one winner. Each of those winners will go on to compete for the Grand Prize. The winning remix of each track will receive a prize pack of CDs from each of the remix artists and two tickets to the festival. One grand prize winner will also receive 2 passes to the festival with Artist credentials, a custom MobBase iPhone app and lifetime subscription from MixMatchMusic, $200 for travel expenses and a hotel room along with the chance of a lifetime — a one-hour set in front of thousands of festival goers at Camp Bisco 9.

The competition started May 19 and runs until June 21. Winners will be announced on June 28. Stems and all rights to the submissions for the remix contest will be owned by the remix track artists/labels.

The Disco Biscuits :: 04.24.10 :: House of Blues :: Atlantic City, NJ

The Disco Biscuits :: 04.24.10 :: New Jersey

Returning for a much-anticipated showdown in South Jersey’s Atlantic City, The Disco Biscuits performed at the House of Blues last Saturday night. Opening the show was The New Deal, who got fans warmed up with a set of high-energy electro jams, setting a positive mood for the night.

With Jon Gutwillig still on the sidelines due to a broken wrist, the Biscuits’ show featured guitarists Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past, American Babies) and Chris Michetti (RAQ). Playing for a packed venue, the first set opened up with a strong version of “Frog Legs” that got the crowd going early. Fan favorite “Shelby Rose” took a while to get off the ground but held up nicely and went into “Down to the Bottom,” creating a dance party with Barber singing onstage. Keeping the pace upbeat, “Down to the Bottom” led into “You and I,” a song off the new album Planet Anthem (JamBase review). The high point of the first set was the segue into “Run Like Hell,” which led back into “Down to The Bottom” to finish the first half of the show.

Set two began with “Uber Glue” and “Pimp Blue Rikkis,” a dark, electronic rap song. Things finally picked up with a “Spraypaint” sing-along into an inverted “Great Abyss,” the first since Camp Bisco ’06. The jamming continued into “Confrontation” with an “Abyss” fake out. “Caterpillar” had a very nice, tight jam – nothing too special but always fun to dance to – and eventually led back to “Spraypaint” to end the second set.

The encore began with “Jamillia” and segued into a cover of The Who’s Tommy gem “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” Even without Jon Gutwillig on guitar, the Biscuits still managed to play an amazing show and keep the fans satisfied. Hopefully the band will be back in full action for a third year in Atlantic City, where you can win a jackpot right after the show or during set break!

SXSW | 03.18.10 | Austin, TX – Day 2

Words by: Kayceman | Images by: Scott Dudelson & Kayceman

SXSW :: 03.18.10 :: Thursday :: Austin, TX

Kayceman’s Top 3

#3 – Broken Social Scene

Band of Horses at Stubb’s
03.18.10 by Dudelson

If we let them, Broken Social Scene will heal us. One of the most innovative and influential indie rock bands of our time, they’ve pulled off the very difficult trick of being super-indie-hipster chic but so totally void of pretense or posturing that the music always feels real, genuine and from a deep place. When they tell us to fight for joy or they crank out triumphant, celebratory music and tell us it’s how our lives should sound, it works. This is the power of music. Melody, notes and words combined and organized in ways that illicit profound emotion, thoughts and even actions – these are the waters that BSS swim in. Though Feist performing at Stubb’s on Thursday night was just a rumor (there’s lots of rumors at SXSW – did you hear Jay-Z and Mötley Crue are gonna do surprise sets?) it didn’t matter. Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew, Apostle of Hustle, Jason Collett and the other dozen or so musicians (I believe the stage maxed out at 14 people) put on a life-affirming set of loose jams and soaring harmonies. New track “World Sick” from the forthcoming Forgiveness Rock Record (due May 4 on Arts & Crafts) featured one of the most infectious bass lines at SXSW and old standouts “Fire Eye’d Boy” and “7/4 (Shoreline)” wrapped us tight in a sheet of distorted guitars and warm horns.

#2 – Band of Horses

Another group with a new album coming soon (Infinite Arms out May 17 on Columbia), Band of Horses also toil in emotion’s murky waters. Ben Bridwell and his Horses aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty digging through dark soil, but like Broken Social Scene, there’s resolution and joy in the end. Starting their set at Stubb’s with “Is There A Ghost” and “Great Salt Lake,” it didn’t take long for the giant guitars and powerful vocals to capture the sprawling crowd’s attention. And when the girl next to me grabbed her boyfriend’s arm and said, “I’m sooo excited. I love this band,” it was clear this music speaks to people. Like art in general, it’s a difficult thing to quantify or explain. Why does a certain selection of notes or set of words make us feel what it does? What is it about certain songs that allow them to touch us so deeply? Hard to say, but when you feel it, there’s no mistaking it. Band of Horses staples “The Funeral,” “No One’s Gonna Love You” and “Marry Song” were coupled with a Yo La Tengo cover and two new songs. The first new track was a mid-tempo burner pulled tight with emotion and the second was a foot-stomping country rock number with a heavy dose of organ; both show great promise for the upcoming album. More than even the sweet material Bridwell is coming up with, what makes Band of Horses so great right now is that they are a real band and they’re finding their power. The lineup went through a number of changes before arriving at this unit and every time I’ve seen this band over the past year or two they’ve gotten better and better.

#1 – Kayceman’s Treehouse Party

Paz Lenchantin – Entrance Band
03.18.10 by Kayceman

Kayceman’s Treehouse Party was really fun. Perched up on a deck framed against the Austin skyline and packed with some of my favorite bands, it was an honor to have my name associated with such talent. Showing up to my own party just a little late due to a work commitments, I, unfortunately, missed Any Day Parade and The Fresh & Onlys, but when The Moondoggies started all worries washed away. Like an 18-wheeler headed down a steep slope, The Moondoggies’ three-part harmonies, tent revival energy, and gospel-baked roots rock was impossible to deny. If you dig The Band and The Byrds and don’t know this Seattle group then you have to check out their stunning 2008 debut Don’t Be a Stranger (JamBase review).

Following The Moondoggies was perhaps my favorite set of the day: The Entrance Band. Guitarist/vocalist/leader Guy Blakeslee is a psychedelic guitar shredder. Shirt off and standing on speakers, he played lefty with a right-handed guitar strung upside down a la Hendrix, and this is one follower Jimi would surely approve of. As difficult as it was to steal any of Blakeslee’s thunder, bassist Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle) stole the show. Sexier than all hell in her high heels and tight jeans, she was rolling on the stage, playing over her head and rubbing against the speakers. But none of it would have mattered if she weren’t such an over-the-top monster bassist. Blakeslee and Paz are a remarkable team, and with drummer Derek James they dig deep into the psych-rock woods – feeling, living every note and squeezing the juice from every moment of their glorious journey.

Entrance Band was a hard act to follow, but Red Cortez fears no stage. Built around gifted frontman Harley Prechtel-Cortez, there’s an early U2 vibe that hints at what’s possible for this band, and based on the new material we heard in Austin and with a new album produced by the legendary Ethan Johns coming soon, one gets the impression this band is just starting to hit their stride.

Big Light :: Kayceman’s Treehouse
03.18.10 by Kayceman

The Mother Hips did what they do and burned the Treehouse down. One of the most consistently great live acts around, they don’t disappoint. Playing to the largest crowd of the day, burly rockers like “Grizzly Bear” and “Third Floor Story,” and the dirty hard funk-rock of “Magazine” were razor sharp but never too tight. Frontman Tim Bluhm and guitarist Greg Loiacono are a true dynamic duo, and this band is enjoying a true renaissance period right now that finds them better than at any point in their 20 year career.

It’s clear Everest are on the rise. Touring with Neil Young has taught them how to flex their muscles, and when they lean into crunching guitar jams it hits hard. But they also show a delicate, acoustic side and bandleader Russell Pollard is shaping up to be a remarkable songwriter. The tracks from their upcoming sophomore album, On Approach (due April 20 on Vapor Records), indicate a band that’s nowhere near their ceiling. It should be fun to watch them climb the mountain.

Hosting San Francisco local boys and JamBase darling Big Light was a real treat. Playing to a deck full of industry folks there to see them, BL did the job with four hard hitting power-pop nuggets of rock & roll. There were several conversations overheard about how this band is “really getting their shit together,” and the interplay between drummer Bradly Bifulco and guitar stud Jeremy Korpas during “Heavy” was just awesome.

Closing down the festivities was Knoxville, TN’s Royal Bangs. Pumping out woozy keyboards and inventive guitar lines, they were a jolt of energy that reinvigorated anyone who might have gotten a bit too much sun up at the Treehouse. Hitting pleasure zones like !!!, they’ve described their music as “easy shred computer jam,” and even though they’ve trimmed from a five-piece to a trio there appears to be little if anything lost in transition.

Those Darlins :: 03.18.10 :: SXSW

Yacht

I’d heard vaguely of Yacht going in, and honestly probably would have skipped them if it weren’t for the urging of a buddy. Based on the name alone, I had assumed they were going to be more along the lines of some kind of ironic hipster “yacht rock,” with boat shoes and Kenny Loggins-style falsettos. Oh how wrong I was. Although they certainly were dressed to the nines, this wasn’t no champagne-sipping in the sunshine sail. They laid down a dirty, post-punk, disco ass-shake-a-thon at the Spaceland Day Party at Palm Door. Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans held court at the front of the stage as their band offered up lead-heavy beats and screaming punk aggression. They were the picture of cool as they strutted back and forth, working the crowd into a jumping mess with steely stares and sneers that said, “If you don’t dance, someone’s gonna get hurt.” Evans would twist her mic cord around her body and fiercely pose by the pole in the center of the stage, with a vibe that couldn’t help but remind me of Debbie Harry. I could see these cats going over well at Camp Bisco. If you dig !!! or Gossip, climb on board.

Fool’s Gold

Heaving and buckling with the weight of sardine-packed jumping bodies, the narrow side porch of the Palm Door (which was serving as a makeshift second stage) threatened to give way during Fool’s Gold’s early evening set. This band puts on a tribal, tropical dance party that grabs your sweaty hand and drags you into a conga line. They really stretched out, too, moving between blasting sax funk and tight drumming with snappy ease, keeping those floorboards quaking under their brilliant shine.

The Entrance Band

The setting for the stacked lineup at Kayceman’s Treehouse Party felt like an awesome little secret, set high above the rumble of 6th Street below. As the hot midday sun beat down on our heads at the upstairs patio at Cheers shot bar, Entrance Band melted our brains. Playing psychedelic scattershot guitar like Hendrix (he even busted out the behind-the-head move), frontman Guy Blakeslee had the rock star thing down to a science. Pure organic chemistry, as badass bassist Paz Lenchantin crushed the low end and drummer Derek James seemed hypnotized behind his wall of hair. Drawing out washes of feedback while bent over their instruments, Blakeslee and Lenchantin looked about ready to fold up and meld with the stage. They rose up, to end the set with a tremendous roar. Note to self: earplugs exist for a reason.

Those Darlins

Man Man :: 03.18.10 :: SXSW

“If you don’t want a wild one/ Don’t hang around with me” might as well be tattooed on these girls’ forearms. Look out, fellas, you might well find yourself handcuffed to a bed with your wallet missing and your car long gone. Riot girl rockabilly queens-to-be, these gals are like the delinquent granddaughters of Wanda Jackson (guitarist Jessi Darlin‘s voice even had a similar high-pitched gritty wail). With songs about getting drunk and eating a whole chicken and having phone sex with prank callers, they aren’t afraid to get raunchy and bloody and then wake up with questionable bruises. Nikki Darlin dropped her baritone ukulele towards the end of the set and stomped around the front of the stage at the Billboard.com Bungalow, spitting gulps from her pint of whiskey sky high. At one point, she balanced herself on some folks in the front row, and it looked like an older, bald gentleman got pretty well acquainted with her crotch for a minute. It was chaos by the end of their set, with Nikki and bassist Kelley Darlin wrestling, and Jessi strangling and tossing her guitar around, before all three dissolved into a pile, rolling and kicking in the center of the stage. This shit was totally badass, oozing confident in-your-face sexuality and dirty south pride. I want to rage with these gals, but I think things would get pretty damn messy.

Man Man

With Man Man, I don’t know if I want to have whatever they are having, but I sure do love the contact high. This band brings out something positively primal in you, puts you in touch with some feral base elements growling in your blood, makes you want to howl at the moon. Let me put it this way – it was the first honest to god slam pit and stage push I’d seen at SXSW. If you were in the front for this show, you were part of the chaos. No standing back and taking notes or texting on your Blackberry here. Like a marching band on the elevator to hell, or a birthday party from your Jungian shadow, their stage set-up is always impressive, as they leap from brass to xylophone to noise makers. Frontman Honus Honus stalked around with a wild, possessed look in his eyes, contorting his face as he sang, wrapping himself in a hooded cloak and red Christmas lights one minute, donning a glittery dress the next. “You make me feel like a zombie!” he shrieked during “Big Trouble.” There’s a monster inside all of us, and you can always count on Man Man to drag it out from under the bed. It’s pretty damn exciting, and a little bit scary.

Dead Confederate

Equal parts grungy and hypnotic, Dead Confederate gave us one final shot of adrenaline in our veins as we gathered the last pieces of the night. The enormous sound was all encompassing, gluing you to the pavement, so that all you could do was violently shake your head in its wake. Hardy Morris has a wail that reminded me a little bit of Perry Farrell, cutting through the dark fuzz of the band to soar over those of us still upright. It shot shivers straight through my bones. As 2:00 a.m. crept up, Morris said the band had two more songs. They slew one, and then halfway through their last song, the plug was pulled. It was an abrupt and jarring end, and it’s unfortunate the Billboard.com Bungalow wouldn’t have let them see it through an extra few minutes instead of unceremoniously sending us out into the night to dodge the wasted and the lost winding their way back towards beds or searching for that last, secret party pumping somewhere in the Austin night.

The Disco Biscuits Change The Anthem

By: Brian Bavosa

The Disco Biscuits

It’s only hours before the lineup announcement for Camp Bisco 9 as I speak with bassist Marc Brownstein. A world-renowned festival hosted by The Disco Biscuits which originated in 1999, the annual event has seen its share of evolution over the years. Built slowly upon the roots of a regional party, big name artists like Snoop Dog, Nas and Damien Marley have made recent appearances. Maybe that’s the reason Brownstein is bubbling with energy and excitement during the duration of our hour-plus phone chat. As he gushes in his notoriously raspy, smoky drawl over this year’s Camp headliners – Ween and LCD Soundsystem, along with the Biscuits – he explains, “[We] had been trying to get [these bands] for years.” For a festival steeped heavily in the jam/live-electro scene, the inclusion of artists like these speaks to the Biscuits’ commitment to change and evolution.

“If you don’t change, you get left behind,” says Brownstein.

Nothing represents this notion more than The Disco Biscuits’ latest studio effort, Planet Anthem (released March 16 through Diamond Riggs Records) (JamBase review). In many ways, Planet Anthem is an extension of the mentality of Camp Bisco and its lineage over the past decade. Brownstein, with bandmates Aron Magner (keys), Allen Aucoin (drums) and Jon “Barber” Gutwillig (guitar), started Camp Bisco over a decade ago. Once a small affair held on the farmlands of Pennsylvania’s countryside, Camp Bisco has developed into arguably the preeminent electronic-related music festival in the country. The first fest to allow – and encourage – both “jam bands” and DJs on the same stage, Camp Bisco has seemingly found a home in Upstate New York at the Indian Lookout Country Club, where it’s been held since 2007. In fact, Camp was where Simon Posford, a producer on the new album, made his first appearance into the jam scene, winning over a legion of fans with his Hallucinogen in Dub set and returning the next year with his Younger Brother live band.

This year’s festival will be held from July 15-17 and will again feature multiple stages. Brownstein feels it is by far the best lineup yet. When talking about LCD Soundsystem and Ween, he says, “We didn’t expect to get both of them, but then we got both of them. So, when that happens you take them both!” He’s also quick to point out similarities between the Biscuits approach to Planet Anthem and LCD Soundsystem. Both acts have been searching for ways to incorporate a wide mix of styles without loosing their electro edge.

The Disco Biscuits at Camp Bisco 2008 by Vann

Brownstein explains how Planet Anthem, a labor of love that also began in 2007, shaped up the way it did.

“We made four albums while we were making this album! We very carefully chose the songs while we were making this album. Out of 50 songs [these 13] were all chosen for a reason. They were chosen because as time went on it was a two-and-a-half-year-process, and when we got to the end of the two-and-a-half-years these were the songs that stood the test of time,” he says, “songs that are still relevant in 2010. Shit is changing fast in the music world, and being relevant in 2010, the only way to do that is be aware of what kind of music is out there and be influenced by it. That’s the key!”

Planet Anthem draws on a multitude of genres, from rock to hip-hop to electronica to everything in between, and that’s one of the reasons it’s so daring – or may seem confusing to casual or even experienced Bisco listeners. It’s all things Bisco delivered in a very un-Bisco-like package, featuring guest singers, new arrangements and heavy production. Another difference on this album was the decision to not road test the material and instead record new songs largely unheard by fans. Brownie promises “Big Wrecking Ball,” a true rock song at heart, will make heads roll when the fans hear it live.

I don’t know if in ten years I’m going to look back and say this was a good thing or a bad thing, or even a thing, but if we had made that other album [referring to typical Bisco releases] then we wouldn’t be talking about MTV.

-Marc Brownstein

Brownstein even contends that Planet Anthem seems to fit in with the band and their overall timeline.

“If you know The Disco Biscuits, you know that we started out as a jam band with no electronic music. And if you really followed us, you watched us start to incorporate trance, then dub, hip-hop and all different styles of music over the years, you know, classical, the whole nine [yards],” explains Brownstein. “You’ve seen us go from a band that would play jazz standards to a band that never plays jazz standards. You’ve seen us go from a band that has electronic music in our jams to playing songs electronic the whole way through. And all [the way] back again to writing songs like ‘Big Wrecking Ball’ that are just rock songs.”

What makes this studio effort unique is how it mixes and matches so many elements together, while holding true to the band’s trademark top-flight musicianship. “It would have been very easy for us to go in and attempt to make an all electronic album,” he says. “That’s what everyone is doing now. They’ve dropped the music.”

The Disco Biscuits at Camp Bisco 2009 by Vann

In line with their mantra of anything goes, the band also employed the help of many local and, in a few cases, world renown names to help contribute, tweak or produce. These names include Simon Posford, Harry Zelnick, Tor Hyams and longtime friend and side project cohort Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past, American Babies).

“The thing that I love about The Disco Biscuits is that you get in the studio and there are no barriers, no walls, there is nothing stopping us from doing anything in any direction,” says Brownstein. “[We're] four guys who all write music regularly, plus a team of our producers – Harry, Tommy, Alex, Simon, Tor – a team of the top musical people in our city AND some of the top in the world coming together to kind of guide the sound, and the sound goes in fucking twenty directions at once yet it works together!”

One of the major and immediate results of this approach was the band’s initial music video for “You and I”, which has been in steady rotation on MTV2. “I don’t know if in ten years I’m going to look back and say this was a good thing or a bad thing, or even a thing, but if we had made that other album [referring to typical Bisco releases] then we wouldn’t be talking about MTV!”

As we rub up on the topic of fans, evolution and that video on MTV, Brownstein is eager to discuss more upcoming videos. The next clip is for “On Time” (catch a preview of the video here), perhaps the catchiest tune on the album, a club-banger that could bring a whole new type of fan to the party.

“There’s four more videos on the way. We’re even making a trilogy of videos,” says Brownstein. “It’s ‘Fish Out of Water,’ ‘On Time’ and ‘Widgets.’ The three songs are all tied together in video, and it’s the story of a robot who picks up this really, really bangin’ girl in a club. It’s a really, really crazy looking video and it’s done in animation, and it’s really, really hot. In addition to the ‘You and I’ remix video that we’re going to do, we’re going to have four more videos coming out. So, we’re looking at five or six videos for this album.”

Regardless of your opinion of The Disco Biscuits or Planet Anthem, which many fans will likely hate due to the unexpected, almost unrecognizable nature of the material, it’s hard not to be impressed by the band’s willingness to try new things. The Biscuits have been doing this for well over a decade and the last thing they needed was another album that tried to capture what they already do onstage every night.

“We’re not even swinging for the fences,” says Brownstein. “We’re just making different music. Our goal was not to make a massive album. Our goal was to make a good album. Our goal was to make good songs.”

Disco Biscuits Will Release Planet Anthem On 02/02

DISCO BISCUITS SET TO RELEASE LONG-AWAITED PLANET ANTHEM ON FEBRUARY 2, 2010

The Disco Biscuits

When The Disco Biscuits formed in Philadelphia in 1995, they introduced a pioneering blend of electronic and jam band elements. Since then, they’ve steadily cultivated a rabid fan base and have spawned an entire movement. Today the Biscuits are able to sell over a quarter of a million tickets in a year and have founded uber-successful summer music festival, Camp Bisco. But rather than remaining within their comfort zone, the band has forged ahead and introduced new ingredients to the beloved Bisco sound.

This Fall, the Biscuits gave a sneak peak of the highly eclectic new material with two EP’s, On Time and Widgets. On February 2, 2010 their latest chapter is fully realized in the form of their new album, Planet Anthem, on Diamond Riggs Records. Planet Anthem is the product of three fruitful years of labor, during which The Disco Biscuits absorbed everything from hip hop to pop to indie rock into their sound. The band collaborated for the first time with multiple producers, songwriters, and outside musicians, including Don Cheegro and Dirty Harry (Ludacris, Chris Brown, Beanie Sigel).

While the album still bears the signature Bisco sound, it also broadens the group’s palette and contains a mountain of meaty hooks. “You and I” is a pogo-inducing rocker with slightly sinister guitar riffs and a monster, arena-ready chorus. “On Time” is a breezy, electro-flavored anthem that is poised to slip into clubs across the country.

The Disco Biscuits have always attracted a diverse audience and their broad taste is reflected by the lineup of their Camp Bisco music festival each year. The past eight years have included performances by LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy, and fellow DFA artists Holy Ghost!, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dog, Kid Cudi, MSTRKRFT, Chromeo, and many more.

GATHER FOR CHARITABLE CHICAGO BLUEGRASS & BLUES FEST / 1 DAY, 25 BANDS, $35

“The Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival will prove to be the next great landmark in Chicago music culture.” – Herschel Concepcion, JamBase.com

Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival 2008 by Sands

The Congress Theater, in conjunction with Chicago independents Kingtello Presents, is proud to announce the second coming of the Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival. While rooted in the foot-stomping influences of bluegrass and blues, the festival will transport the concertgoer through the genre-defying evolution of music today. The all-ages one-day event, held on Saturday, December 12 from 11 a.m. to midnight, will serve as a tribute to two schools of music that continue to shape and inspire contemporary rock, jam, funk, folk, roots, Americana, and indie cultures.

Against the backdrop of an official Chicago landmark and one of the last of the classic “movie palaces,” fans will be treated to a party with a purpose, featuring 3 stages and 25 bands for less than the typical price of the headliners alone. Six-time Grammy-winner Bela Fleck and his Flecktones will unite for their first Chicago date together since mid-2007, as Bela has been devoting extended stints to the likes of the Sparrow Quartet, The Africa Project, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain.

They’ll be joined by Philadelphia’s psych-folk harmonizers, Dr. Dog, who’ve rapidly ascended the public consciousness this year with breakout performances at both Coachella and Camp Bisco. The Emmitt-Nershi Band, uniting Leftover Salmon’s mandolin and vocals (Drew Emmitt) with the songwriting and flat-picking guitar of The String Cheese Incident (Billy Nershi), joins the party as well. And Eddie “The Chief” Clearwater, proudly declared “Chicago’s premier blues entertainer” by the Chicago Tribune, will properly represent the scene that put his city on the international music map.

Tickets are onsale for $35 through the event’s website, Ticketmaster.com, and clubtix.net.

The Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival will offer a musical reprieve from the merciless Chicago Winter by adapting elements of a summer music festival to the historic and intimate indoor setting. In addition to 13 hours of 3 stages worth of nonstop music, the day’s activities will also include a pickin’ circle, a live-art exhibition and indoor gallery, charitable raffles, film screenings, the original Blues Brothers car, and impromptu marching band performances.

In between main stage sets, an array of performers will treat fans to special “pop-up” sets from the Congress Theater’s historic balcony.

Join the Headliners on the Main Stage – Last Banjo Standing Contest: Organizers have announced that they will once again hold the “LAST BANJO STANDING,” an online contest that scours Chicagoland to find the top bluegrass or blues inspired artist. The winner, as voted on by fans, family, friends and music lovers around the city will join the headliners on the main stage roster. Sign up and vote at cbbfestival.com/contest.

About the Charities:

And while the festival will serve to break a band or two, festival-goers will get to help children. A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to two non-profit organizations, the Saving tiny Hearts Society and Prevent Child Abuse America.

The complete artist roster includes:

Bonobo :: 07.12.09 :: Logan Square Auditorium/Sonotheque :: Chicago, IL

Bonobo (band) :: 07.12 :: Logan Square Auditorium

Having already seen several shows at the Logan Square Auditorium I pretty much knew what to expect from the place – big room (high school gym-esque), obscure location (3rd floor of an old office building) and marginal acoustics (to say the least). Given the respect Bonobo commands for his intricate compositions and the production value of his music, I was a bit perplexed as to why the venue was chosen in the first place, but nonetheless, I tried my best to keep expectations aside as I walked up the three flights of stairs, already feeling the building’s frame shaking a bit. Upon entering the room (a little late), I was hit with a ton of bass, which continued to echo around the cavernous room throughout the set and honestly killed any low end that the rest of the arrangement could offer.

Quickly putting my disdain for the unfortunate acoustics aside, I really did feel a whirlwind of energy flowing through the several hundred heads dancing surprisingly furiously for a Sunday night. One couldn’t help but notice the prevalence of ‘Bisco kids’ – who most likely were turned on to Bonobo by The Disco Biscuits‘ festy Camp Bisco (read the review here), where the live band played. There were seemingly no strangers to ‘heady’ electronic music with a side of ‘womp’ on the wooden dance floor, which bounced with the audiences’ every move. Hands were in the air the entire show, and the band was met with ecstatic approval after every song and even a few boos were heard when the encore came to a close. It felt almost like a jamband show, but with a hint of sophistication, which an artist like Bonobo deserves.

Bonobo (DJ) :: 07.12 :: Sonotheque

Having never seen the live band before, I was impressed, to say the least. The set was sculpted carefully with the vibe dodging unapologetically from electronic ambience to hard funk without feeling forced. The constant interplay between the tenor sax and the female vocals perfectly complimented the tight, driving rhythm section, such that one could not help but get pulled pleasantly in and out of the groove. Bonobo is clearly hip to the mastery of aural satisfaction and I think everyone in the room felt that special something.

Without harping on ‘coulda, woulda, shoulda’s,’ I really couldn’t stop thinking about how much the proverbial ante could have been upped for both draw and sound had the show taken place on a Friday or Saturday in an acoustically appropriate room.

But luckily our foray into the Bonobian soundscape was not over as we quickly moved on to Sonotheque for Bonobo’s DJ set. Once again surprised on a Sunday by the relatively big draw, I entered what I knew would be a 180-degree shift in acoustics. A long, sleek, narrow room with the DJ booth about halfway in, Sonotheque offers some of the best sound in Chicago. Not too loud and never invasive, the set followed Sonotheque’s weekly reggae night and began with a surprising propensity towards Afrobeat grooves. Surprising because Bonobo is usually steeped in Eastern and Indian influence. However, he’s obviously worked a room before, as he flowed ever so smoothly out of reggae by way of Afrobeat until we found ourselves grooving to tablas and sitar laden compositions before the end of the night. By 2 a.m. the crowd was certainly feelin’ groovy and after the obligatory push to overstay their welcome, the majority could be heard discussing after hours ideas while some stuck around and mingled hoping to shake Simon’s hand.

All I can say is Bonobo is the truth. I do hope the band comes back and I hope the circumstances next time are right for a more expansive experience of some of the best, most provocative music being made today.
