Kyrgyz president ‘headed for win’

By Rayhan Demytrie
BBC News, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Opposition supporters rally in Bishkek, July 23

Votes are being counted in Kyrgyzstan’s presidential election, which the main opposition candidate has denounced as illegitimate alleging widespread fraud.

But the central election commission has ruled the vote valid.

Out of six candidates, two emerged as clear frontrunners – incumbent leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev and opposition candidate Almazbek Atambayev.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe is to give its assessment of the process on Friday.

‘Carousel voters’

Late on Thursday, opposition supporters of Mr Atambayev gathered outside his campaign headquarters for a concert and to express their discontent with the election process.

Many said they witnessed widespread violations such as groups of so-called carousel voters moving from one polling station to another.

The crowd dispersed when leaders of the opposition reassured them that further actions would be taken in the coming days.

It is widely expected that incumbent President Bakiyev will win his second term in office after a high turnout and exit polls giving over 60% of votes in his favour.

Mr Bakiyev – who came to power four years ago off the back of a popular uprising which became known as the Tulip Revolution – had pledged to conduct free and fair elections.

But his political opponents claim their supporters have been threatened.

His main rival, Mr Atambayev, said he had to send his wife and daughter away from the country after being intimidated.

During Thursday’s vote, clashes between opposition members and government forces were reported in the northern town of Balykchi.</p

Brown braced for defeat in Norwich

Tory candidate expected to win in poll triggered by resignation of MP caught up in expenses scandal

Gordon Brown is bracing himself for electoral defeat as polls opened today in the Norwich North byelection.

Labour has held the seat comfortably since 1997 but the party is expected to pay a heavy price for the MPs’ expenses controversy in the first Westminster byelection since the Commons was rocked by the scandal.

David Cameron is due to visit the constituency for the sixth time this morning, giving a final boost to a campaign seen by Conservative headquarters as an important test of the party’s ability to withstand a Labour attack based on a “Tory cuts” message.

Unusually, the votes will be counted tomorrow rather than at the close of the polls this evening, partly because staffing a daytime count is easier. This has not happened at a byelection in recent years.

The byelection was caused by the resignation of Ian Gibson, a leftwinger who quit parliament after Labour ruled that he would not be allowed to stand at the next election because he used parliamentary expenses to fund a flat which he subsequently sold at a discount to his daughter.

Gibson, who was popular in the constituency, had a majority of 5,459 in 2005, and Labour’s decision to ban him as a candidate appears to have backfired, with some voters telling the party that they will not vote for his replacement, 28-year-old Chris Ostrowski, because they think Gibson was treated unfairly.

The Conservatives seem confident of victory. But they are nervous of comparisons with the Crewe and Nantwich byelection last year, when the Tories overturned a Labour majority of more than 7,000, winning by 7,860 with a swing of 17.6%.

“Crewe and Nantwich took place against the backdrop of the abolition of the 10p rate of tax and voters were so angry that they came straight over to us. Norwich North is different because, as a result of expenses, the voters are angry with all parties,” said one senior Tory.

Chloe Smith, the 27-year-old Conservative candidate, has responded to the challenge of campaigning in a climate of scepticism about politicians by issuing her own “contract with the people of Norwich North” containing various promises on policy and expenses.

The Liberal Democrats, who were well behind the Tories in 2005, claimed yesterday that it was now a Tory-Lib Dem contest, and that Labour could come third behind their candidate, April Pond.

At the start of the byelection, Labour campaigned aggressively on the theme of “Tory cuts”, in what was seen as a dry run for the general election strategy being planned by Brown. But the Tories believe that this tactic has been unsuccessful in Norwich North because they are winning the argument on public spending nationally.

Labour’s campaign suffered a blow when Ostrowski was taken to hospital with swine flu yesterday. He was recuperating today, but cabinet ministers Andy Burnham and Alan Johnson were in Norwich North campaigning on his behalf.

“I am very confident that we can win this byelection,” said Burnham. Privately, Labour was trying to make life difficult for Cameron by suggesting that anything less than a 10,000 majority would be a disappointment for the Tory leader.

The other candidates are: Peter Baggs (Independent), Thomas Burridge (Libertarian party), Anne Fryatt (None of the Above party), Bill Holden (Independent), Laud Howling (The Official Monster Raving Loony party), Craig Murray (Put An Honest Man into Parliament), Rupert Read (Green), Glenn Tingle (UK Independence party) and Robert West (British National party).

Labour candidate treated for swine flu

Chris Ostrowski, who is standing for Labour in the Norwich North byelection, taken to hospital 48 hours before polling day

Labour’s candidate in this week’s Norwich North byelection is being treated for suspected swine flu, the party said today.

A spokesman for the Norwich North Labour campaign said: “We can confirm that Chris Ostrowski is being treated for a suspected case of swine flu.

“This was confirmed by doctors at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital after Chris felt unwell and was taken there earlier today. He collapsed at home and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“Chris is receiving world class care from an excellent team of doctors, nurses and staff. Clearly, our priority is to ensure that nobody falls ill from swine flu unnecessarily and we will follow the medical advice and take every precaution necessary.”

Labour is widely expected to lose Thursday’s contest, caused by the resignation of sitting MP Ian Gibson after the party’s expenses panel excluded him from standing at the next election.

The Tory candidate, Chloe Smith, is the favourite to take the seat, overturning Labour’s 5,459 majority from the 2005 poll.

Smith said in a statement: “I’m extremely sorry to hear that Chris has been taken ill this morning. One of my campaign team had a suspected case of swine flu two weeks ago so I know just how horrible it can be.

“I’d like to send Chris my best wishes and I hope he will make a speedy recovery.”

‘Key public show’ for Iran poll contender

Mir-Hossein Mousavi before elections

Iran’s defeated opposition presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, says he will make his first public appearance for several weeks at Friday prayers.

In a message to supporters on his web site, Mr Mousavi said he would attend congregational prayers at Tehran University as a show of solidarity.

The sermon is due to be delivered by former president and critic of the re-elected president, Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Mr Mousavi’s supporters bitterly dispute the result of the 12 June poll.

"I will join the lines on Friday as I feel obliged to respond to the call of companions on the path to protecting rights to a noble and free life," Mr Mousavi said on Ghalamnews website.

Another defeated candidate Mehdi Karroubi said he would join the congregation at what will be Mr Rafsanjani’s first sermon in more than two months, reports say.

‘Landslide victory’

Massive street protests followed the presidential election in which at least 20 people were killed in violence and hundreds were arrested, according to official figures.

Mr Mousavi vowed on Wednesday not to let the blood of protesters killed by security forces and pro-government militias be spilt in vain, a reformist website reported.

He was speaking during a visit to the family of Sohrab Arabi, a teenager killed in protests.

The country’s most senior political figure, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, upheld Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s landslide victory and demanded an end to protest.

Correspondents say it is not clear whether Mr Mousavi’s supporters will manage to gather in large numbers around the university in Enghelab Square on Friday, where some of the largest post-election demonstrations took place.

Pro-government media have been warning about the possibility of "provocation" at Friday prayers.

One newspaper called on worshippers "not to be deceived and reject those who shout divisive slogans".</p

UK ‘backs Blair for EU president’

Tony Blair

Ex-prime minister Tony Blair is the UK candidate for president of the European Council, Europe Minister Baroness Kinnock has apparently confirmed.

At a briefing for journalists in Strasbourg, Lady Kinnock said the UK was supporting Mr Blair for one of the most powerful posts in the EU.

Asked if this had been discussed with Mr Blair, she said the government "would not do that without asking him".

The post depends on Irish backing of the Lisbon Treaty in a referendum.

But this is the first time a UK government minister has publicly announced Tony Blair is a candidate for the job.

Previously, ministers have said that as there was at present no job, any talk of supporting a specific candidate was premature.

Lady Kinnock went on to say Mr Blair had the "strength of character" and "status" to take on the job.

She added: "People know who he is, and he could step into this new role with a lot of respect and he would be generally welcomed."

Later, an official emphasised that the Irish Republic has yet to hold its referendum on the Treaty.

But the official added that if and when the treaty came into force and Mr Blair decides run as a candidate, Mr Blair would have government support. </p

Seven Great Questions to Ask at a Job Interview

Seven Great Questions to Ask at a Job Interview

If you are going for an interview as a prospective employee then you should do some research.  Read the job description and requirements carefully.  Browse the web site to see how the organization presents itself.  Search for news items and comments about the company on news sites and blogs.

For the interview itself you should dress smartly and appropriately.  It is important to have some questions prepared and here are a few that could really help:

1.  What exactly would my day-to-day responsibilities be? It is essential that you clearly understand your role and the tasks that you would be expected to undertake.  It is easy to make assumptions and get the wrong impression of what the work would be so it is vital for both sides that there is clarity in what is expected of you.  If the interviewer cannot give a clear answer then this is a worrying sign, so politely follow up with more questions.  Some people even ask to see exactly where they will sit.

2.  What are the opportunities for training and career advancement? This question serves two purposes.  It helps you to understand where the job might lead and what skills you might acquire.  It also signals that you are ambitious and thinking ahead.

3.  What is the biggest challenge facing the organization today? This sort of question takes the interview away from the detail and towards strategic issues.  It allows to you see and discuss the bigger picture.  It proves that you are interested in more than just the 9 to 5 aspects of the job.  It can lead to interesting discussions that can show you in a good light – especially if you have done some intelligent preparation.  If appropriate you can follow up this question with some questions about the objectives of the department and the manager who is interviewing you.

4.  When did you join? After the interviewer has asked a number of questions about you it can make a good change to ask a gentle question about them.  People often like talking about themselves and if you can get them talking about their progress in the company you can learn useful and interesting things.

5.  What are the criteria that you are looking for in the successful candidate for this position? The job advertisement may have listed what was wanted in a candidate but it is very useful to hear the criteria directly from the interviewer.  The more that you can discover about what they want and how they will make the decision the better placed you are to influence that decision.

6.  How do you feel that I measure up to your requirements for this position? This follows on naturally from the previous questions.  It may seem a little pushy but it is a perfectly fair thing to ask.  In sales parlance this is a ‘trial close’.  If they say that you are a good fit then you can ask whether there is any reason you might not be offered the job.  If they say that you are lacking in some key skill or attribute then you can move into objection handling mode and point out some relevant experience or a countervailing strength.

7.  Would you like to hear what I could do to really help your department? If you want the job then this is a great question to ask at the end of the interview.  Most interviewers will reply, ‘Yes.’  Drawing on what you have learnt in the conversation, you can give a short sales pitch on why you fit the criteria and why your strengths and ideas will siginficantly assist the boss to meet their objectives.  Make it short, direct and clear with the emphasis on the benefits for them of having you in the team.  At the end ask something like, ‘how does that sound?’

Many candidates take a passive role at the interview.  They competently answer the questions that are put to them but they never take the initiative by asking intelligent questions that steer the interview in a helpful direction.  If you are a proactive candidate who asks the sorts of questions given above then you will be seen as more dynamic and you will significantly increase your chances of being offered the job.
