Apple Predictions for 2010: iPhone on Multiple Carriers, iSlate, Beatles

Apple experienced a strong 2009 despite the recession but may make substantial changes to its product lines and strategy in 2010 in order to counter direct competition from Google, Microsoft and other players. Those strategies could include opening the iPhone to multiple carriers, introducing an iPod Touch with a camera, expanding its retail footprint, releasing the long-rumored tablet PC, imposing increased regulation on the App Store, and even introducing the Beatles catalog to iTunes.
– In contrast to many tech companies dampened down by the recession, Apple
experienced rising revenue and profits throughout 2009, buoyed by strong sales
of its various product lines. But those sorts of shareholder-heartening numbers
rely on a constant base of innovation, and Apple will likely need…

10 Reasons Why, ATandT, Verizon and All Wireless Carriers Disappoint

News Analysis: AT T and Verizon Wireless might be battling out over their real coverage right now, but when it comes time to evaluate these companies and other wireless carriers, disappointment usually follows. Compared with wireless services overseas, the U.S. looks like a third-world country in terms of wireless coverage, 3G access, Internet connectivity and phone quality.
– Verizon
Wireless and AT amp;T are mired in a lawsuit over ads depicting the relatively
poor 3G coverage AT amp;T has compared with Verizon Wireless. AT amp;T says

Wireless Carriers Lash Back at Network Neutrality Proposal

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski’s proposal to possibly extend the agency’s network neutrality principles to the mobile Internet prompts wireless carriers to reach for their favorite phrase: Don’t regulate the Internet.
– The last time the term quot;network neutrality quot; caused this much stir
on Capitol Hill, former Sen. Ted Stevens was lecturing his fellow lawmakers on
how the Internet was a series of pipes that were somehow sacrosanct and above
government regulation. Stevens and his fellow Republicans won …

BlackBerry, iPhone and Palm Pre Reduce Mobile Carriers to Dumb Pipes

News Analysis: In today’s mobile phone market, the features and performance of the most popular phones determine customers’ choice of wireless carriers, not the performance or reliablility of the mobile networks. The top carriers have been reduced to little more than dumb communication pipes. But that situation may soon change if the top phones become carrier-agnostic.

than it is today. Back then, the carriers, especially Verizon Wireless,
AT amp;T and Sprint, were controlling the marketplace.
Customers, looking to find the best deals for the best coverage,
