![]() The String Cheese Incident by Brian Spady |
It had been over a year since String Cheese Incident last assembled on a stage together. Each time they take a break these days it puts a lingering question mark in their fans’ minds but cheekily opening their 3-night Red Rocks run with a tune entitled “Can’t Stop Now” announced that there’s more to this story yet to be told. An encore opening night of “Brand New Start” further fueled the notion that SCI is entering a new phase, rejuvenated and excited by their many outside projects, and surely happy to see the smiling, gently undulating multitudes covering the hillside in front of them.
For whatever else one can say about an “Incident,” there’s no missing the warmth, camaraderie, and in-the-moment engagement of the folks on and off the stage. And the vibe had to be positively tactile revisiting fan faves like “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Rollover” and “Ms Brown’s Teahouse,” not to mention SCI takes on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”
What follows is a glimpse into the fun and fine music that transpired in the Rockies this past weekend as folks await the next big String Cheese run at Horning’s Hideout, July 30-August 1. (Dennis Cook)

7 Ways to Make Life Changing Decisions

Most people don’t know the profound effects of making decisions. Often times, we go through life oblivious to what thoughts we are thinking and what actions we are taking. Every single decision we make in our days shapes our current reality. It shapes who we are as a person because we habitually follow through with the decisions we make without even realizing it.
If you’re unhappy with the results in your life right now, making the effort to changing your decisions starting today will be the key to creating the person you want to be and the life you want to have in the future. Let’s talk about a few ways you can go about making life changing decisions.
1. Realize the power of decision making.
Before you start making a decision, you have to understand what a decision does. Any decision that you make causes a chain of events to happen. When you decide to pick up a cigarette to smoke it, that decision might result in you picking up another one later on to get that same high feeling. After a day, you may have gone through a pack without knowing it. But if you decide not to smoke that first cigarette and make a decision every five minutes to focus your attention somewhere else when you get that craving, after doing this for a week, your cravings will eventually subside and you will become smoke-free. But it comes down to making that very first decision of deciding whether or not to pick up that cigarette.
2. Go with your gut.
Often times, we take too much time to make a decision because we’re afraid of what’s going to happen. As a result of this, we go through things like careful planning, deep analysis, and pros and cons before deciding. This is a very time consuming process. Instead, learn to trust your gut instinct. For the most part, your first instinct is usually the one that is correct or the one that you truly wanted to go with. Even if you end up making a mistake, going with your gut still makes you a more confident decision maker compared to someone who takes all day to decide.
3. Carry your decision out.
When you make a decision, act on it. Commit to making a real decision. What’s a real decision? It’s when you decide on something, and that decision is carried out through action. It’s pointless to make a decision and have it played out in your head, but not doing anything about it. That’s the same as not making a decision at all. If you want to make real changes in life, you have to make it a habit to apply action with your decision until it’s completed. By going through this so many times, you will feel more confident with accomplishing the next decision that you have in mind.
4. Tell others about your decisions.
There’s something about telling other people what we’re going to do that makes us follow through. For example, for the longest time I’ve been trying to become an early riser and whenever I tried to use my own will power, waking up early without falling back asleep felt impossible. So what I did was I went to a forum and made the decision to tell people that I would wake up at 6 AM and stay up. Within two days, I was able to accomplish doing this because I felt a moral obligation to follow through with my words even though I failed the first time. Did people care? Probably not, but just the fact that there might be someone else out there seeing if you’re telling the truth will give you enough motivation to following through with your decision.
5. Learn from your past decisions.
Even after I failed to follow through my decision the first time when I told people I was going to wake up early and stay up, I didn’t give up. I basically asked myself, “What can I do this time to make it work tomorrow? The truth is you are going to mess up at times when it comes to making decisions and instead of beating yourself up over it, learn something from it. Ask yourself, what was good about the decision I made? What was bad about it? What can I learn from it so I can make a better decision next time? Remember, don’t put so much emphasis focusing on short term effects; instead focus on the long term effects.
6. Maintain a flexible approach.
I know this might sound counter-intuitive, but making a decision doesn’t mean that you can’t be open to other options. For example, let’s say you made the decision to lose ten pounds by next month through cardio. If something comes up, you don’t have to just do cardio. You can be open to losing weight through different methods of dieting as long as it helps you reach your goal in the end. Don’t be stubborn to seek out only one way of making a decision. Embrace any new knowledge that brings you closer to accomplishing your initial decision.
7. Have fun making decisions.
Finally, enjoy the process. I know decision-making might not be the most fun thing world to do, but when you do it often, it becomes a game of opportunity. You’ll learn a lot about yourself on the way, you’ll feel and become a lot more confident when you’re with yourself and around others, and making decisions will just become a lot easier after you do it so often that you won’t even think about it.
Anything you decide to do from this point on can have a profound effect later on. Opportunities are always waiting for you. Examine the decisions that you currently have in the day. Are there any that can be changed to improve your life in some way? Are there any decisions that you can make today that can create a better tomorrow?

Free Energy: “Bang Pop” Video
CAN WE CARRY YOUR BOOKS TO CLASS, GOOD LOOKIN’?
Since American pop culture seems intent on staying in high school forever – it’s not just youngsters obsessing over Twilight and Glee – it’s refreshing to see a young band have some real fun with our collective teen obsession. Free Energy plies a crazy endearing pop sound redolent of vintage Cheap Trick, Sweet, Badfinger and other gooey hard candy goodness. With nods to Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher,” Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and the like, Free Energy’s new video for “Bang Pop” is, like most aspects of these charming up-and-comers, just plain fun.

8 Reasons Why Children Misbehave (With Solutions!)

One of the most common expressions parents can be heard saying is, “I don’t understand why he’s/she’s doing thatâ€. There are eight, very common reasons why children misbehave. It is extremely useful for parents to know these because if they can pinpoint the root cause of the misbehavior, they can be more successful at reducing it.
Listed here are the eight most common reasons why children misbehave and a solution to help reduce or eliminate the problem:
1) They want to test whether caregivers will enforce rules.
Children’s main job is to figure out how their complex world works. In order to master the things they need to at each developmental level they will test their parents. They are literally trying to see where the boundaries are, or, if they exist at all. Although testing is frustrating for parents they should know that it is normal and that this is their chance to really make a difference in their child’s life.
How? By setting boundaries and limits and consistently following through on them. This way, their children will adopt positive values and gain self-esteem
2) They experience different sets of expectations between school and home.
Consistency is hugely important in making a child feel safe and secure and able to have a comfortable understanding of the world and how it works. If they are receiving mixed messages from home and school they will feel uneasy inside and express this through more testing than normal and will feel an inner sense of stress.
The best thing a parent can do is learn a simple method to discipline and then have a conversation with their child’s teacher. During this conversation, the parents should explain their method and ask how the teacher handles situations. The goal is to try and use some of the same language at both the school and at home. With a consistent, clear message, children will rise to the expectation and be happier in the process.
3) They do not understand the rules, or are held to expectations that are beyond their developmental levels.
Sometimes, parent expectations go beyond their child’s abilities. Discipline and guidance strategies should always take into account the child’s developmental level. For example, it would be unreasonable to tell a 2 year old to clean up his room and expect that he will finish the job. At this age, children need a lot of support and guidance to do a job like this.
Reading books about what children can do at each age is helpful with this problem so that parents can know what is developmentally appropriate for them to expect of their child.
4) They want to assert themselves and their independence.
Children begin to show their desire for more independence at around age two. They start to want control over certain areas of their life so that they can feel capable and independent. It doesn’t take long for children to identify the areas they CAN control, much to the chagrin of parents. Situations like eating, sleeping, brushing teeth, and dressing are great examples of times when children recognize their power to get you upset and therefore make them feel in control.
What is the solution? Give them loads of choice in their daily life so that they feel in control of their life in other, more positive ways. As well, it is key to learn a simple, loving method to discipline so that misbehavior are taken care of easily, without any emotion required. Without emotion, there is no reason for the child to want to rebel in order to gain control.
5) They feel ill, bored, hungry or sleepy.
When children’s basic needs aren’t met regularly each day they are always more likely to misbehave, cry, throw a tantrum, etc.
The solution to this is simple: have a routine where the child eats, has individual play time, parent and child play or interaction time and sleeps.
6) They lack accurate information and prior experience.
When children do something such as go to cross a road for the first time, they do not know that they are supposed to look both ways, so we all know that we must explain to them to look left and look right, etc. However, the same technique needs to be applied to discipline situations. Children will repeat a behavior over and over until they have accurate information as to what they should be doing instead and prior experience of the consequence if they continue the behavior.
Using clear, concise language stating what they “need†to be doing rather than what they “shouldn’t†be doing is extremely important. Better to say, “Carry this carefullyâ€, rather than, “Don’t drop thisâ€. In other words, give them something to use as prior knowledge for next time.
7) They have been previously “rewarded” for their misbehavior with adult attention.
No parent would ever think of purposefully rewarding bad behavior, but it subtly happens quite often.
Remember, negative attention is still attention so if they misbehave and their parent either yells or spanks, they have just been rewarded.
If the child whines, cries or throws a tantrum and mom or dad eventually gives in to make them become quiet, they have just been rewarded.
The solution? Say what you expect without emotion and then follow through consistently if they continue the negative behavior. The two keys here are: no emotion and little talking.
8) They copy the actions of their parents.
The best teacher of how to misbehave or act and speak inappropriately is by watching mom or dad misbehave or act and speak inappropriately. Remember, what children see and experience in the home is what their normal is. So, if they see mom and dad yelling, they will yell. If they get spanked, they will likely use hitting to express their anger or frustration. If they hear, “What?†instead of “Pardon?†that is what they will use. How can we expect any different?
Although not always simple, parents need to look at parenting as a life lesson in personal growth. I always say that children can make open and willing parents into the best human beings in the world because they have the opportunity to practice being their best selves every single day of the year. Looking at parenting this way makes it easier to catch oneself more often and start demonstrating good behavior by modeling it.

Limit the amount of cash your staff carry with them Posted By : Davis Morris
When you run a business it is especially important for your employees to feel safe when they are out and about or on business premises. Putting measures in place which limits the amount of cash employees need to carry with them is one way of enhancing this safety and giving staff reassurance. Carrying less cash is also good from a personal point of view and good for staff morale. Even if you have an expenses system in place, peoples personal and family circumstances differ from person to person

Sat Eye Candy: Abbey Road
THE SUN KING IS HERE TO GREET YOU AFTER YOUR GOLDEN SLUMBERS
Today marks the 40th anniversary of The Beatles‘ landmark Abbey Road being released in the United Kingdom. Few records can truly be called “essential” but this one rates and we’ve put together a “video album” to commemorate the occasion. Of course, John, Paul, George and Ringo are here, but we’ve opened it up to interpreters who’ve taken these songs and continued to breathe life and love into them since the collection arrived four decades ago.
We begin with John Lennon doing “Come Together” with his own band in the 1970s.
Next, a rare promo video for “Something” from the band that pioneered the notion of rock music with a visual counterpart.
Here’s Paul teaching “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” to the lads.
Emily Elbert does a swell solo acoustic cover of “Oh! Darling.”
Few band’s work habits and rough takes have been more sorted over than The Beatles, and we wouldn’t want to be remiss, so here’s Ringo and George working on “Octopus’s Garden”
Uncle Sam gets in on the action in this version of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” from Julie Taymor’s most excellent Across The Universe.
Continue reading for Side Two of Abbey Road…
Sometimes it’s a long, cold, lonely winter, but this lovely acoustic take on “Here Comes The Sun” should warm our bones nicely.
Maybe it’s our current delight with new TV show Glee coloring our judgement but we think this acappella rendition of “Because” by the U Mass Dynamics rocks pretty hard.
Next, it’s Wonderous Stories doing a spot-on version of “You Never Give Your Money” at B.B. King’s. Well done, sirs.
It’s truly amazing what grand music The Beatles continue to tease out of other human beings. Case in point, this stellar run through “Sun King,” “Mean Mr. Mustard,” “Polythene Pam” and “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” by Bubble recorded at a sold out performance at New York’s Symphony Space.
There’s a particularly wistful quality to Paul’s concert take on the last section of the Abbey Road medley (“Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End”) captured in Montserrat, Spain with a full string section and Mark Knopfler on guitar.
Tacked onto the album by sound engineer John Kurlander in an inspired mistake, “Her Majesty” was originally cut from the Side Two medley but once The Beatles heard the lacquer with this jaunty epilogue they decided to keep it. Easy to understand given that not smiling when this plays is a serious challenge. In the spirit of the tune, we close with several playful ukulele renditions that made us grin, starting Julia Nunes‘ charming clip that apparently caught on and became a bit of a Web thang. Ain’t no telling what the power of The Beatles can do, eh?
