Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta for Android Smartphone Challenges WP7 IE, iPhone Safari

A beta of the Opera Mobile 10.1 browser debuted on the Android smartphone platform, challenging established players including Microsoft for control of the small screen. Opera Mobile 10.1 beta was released on Nov. 9 and is available in the Android market at no cost. Opera Mobile is similar to the Opera Mini browser, and users of Mini will see similarities between the two. According to Opera, the primary difference between the two offerings is that the Opera Presto browser engine is hosted on an Opera server for the Mini browser, while the engine is onboard in Opera Mobile. Mini is smaller and sometimes faster, but also sometimes less accurate, while Opera Mobile provided a very smooth user interface experience and snappy action during my tests. I used Opera Mobile 10.1 beta on a Samsung Vibrant Android handset running on the T-Mobile network. Opera Mobile uses chiclet-like tiles showing open Web pages to help smartphone users jump to sites. Blekko Challenges Google, Yahoo, Bing for Search Engine Share

Blekko launched Nov. 1, promising a new, curated form of search customized by its users, with an assist from the type of machine-generated algorithm search giants Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Bing employ. Blekko users create slashtags, which help them search only the sites users want. This cuts out the spam of irrelevant information and links associated with the classic search engines. Blekko users create their own slashtags, allowing them to set up directories of information in a few vertical areas so that they can come back to them later and let other people see them. Once the slashtags are set up with relevant keywords and populated with target Websites, users can search only the favorite Websites they desire. Blekko has targeted specific verticals for the initial launch, including health, recipes, song lyrics, hotels, automobiles, colleges and personal finance. Expect more to come as the service picks up momentum. That will be quite a challenge versus Google and Bing, but we’re game to give it a shot. – …

Zio Android Smartphone Challenges as Cost Cutter

The Zio Android smartphone on the Sprint network is challenging handsets based on the Google mobile phone OS by coming in cheap, under $100. The Zio is made by Kyocera for Sanyo and poses no threat to more the powerful Droid X or the soon to be released Droid Pro phones made by Motorola for Verizon Wireless or the HTC Evo on Sprints network. The Apple iPhone on ATandTs network and the RIM BlackBerry are also safe from the Zio. Those phones have faster processors and some are capable of using 4G networks and usually offer better and larger display technology. What the Zio does is open the front to cost-conscious consumers who want a cheap smartphone. The Zio comes with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, thereby increasing the likelihood that the handset will end up on a corporate network. The Zio is also Sprint ID ready and able to accept up to five of the newly minted Android interface overlays that bundle together ringtones, widgets and apps that users can download and change to quickly move from a social to work context. Using the touchscreen virtual keyboard is sometimes a challenge but the overall call quality, text and messaging capabilities and the battery life under moderate workloads makes the Zio a workable alternative for consumers who want an Android smartphone at a bargain price. – …
