BMW to quit F1 at end of season

BMW’s future in Formula 1 is in doubt amid speculation they are to pull out at the end of this season.

The German car manufacturer have called an emergency news conference at 0900 BST citing "current developments in motor sport" as the reason.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said the team had given themselves three years to win the world championship.

"It’s not quite been like that so perhaps that’s why they’ve [decided] to stop," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

BMW drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica have amassed only eight points between them this season to leave their team last in the constructors’ championship.

What do you make of the prospect of BMW pulling out of F1

And the decision to pull out of F1 is believed to have been taken at a board meeting on Tuesday.

"When you consider how much money they’ve spent and the results they’ve got, it’s probably not such a good investment," added Ecclestone.

"They were quite sure that they were going to win the championship within three years, and I was hoping they would."

Webber agrees new Red Bull deal

Mark Webber

Mark Webber has signed a new contract committing him to the Red Bull team for the 2010 Formula 1 season.

The 32-year-old Australian won the German Grand Prix earlier this month to record his first F1 race victory.

Webber has been in impressive form this season with five podium finishes and his win at the Nurburgring lifted him to third in the drivers’ championship.

"I’m extremely happy Red Bull and I have been able to agree to race together again next year," said Webber.

"Even in the leaner and tougher years at the start of my relationship with the team, I’ve always enjoyed working with them.

"So now to go through this purple patch, which we hope will continue for a good while to come, makes the work even more enjoyable.

"We’ve a very exciting finish to this year’s championship, but I’m also looking forward to helping to develop and race the car in the 2010 world championship."

With team-mate Sebastian Vettel already signed up for 2010, Red Bull are the first team to definitively confirm their driver pairing for next season.

Webber and Vettel have closed in on championship leader Jenson Button after recent one-two finishes in Britain and Germany, and now now trail the Brawn driver by 21 and 22.5 points in second and third place respectively.

Team boss Christian Horner said it was an easy decision to re-sign Webber given his current form.

"He has continued to show huge commitment and determination this season, especially following his bike accident at the end of last year," he said.

"His recent results show he is on the form of his life – most notably with his recent win at the German GP – and he has the motivation to deliver at the highest level.

"It was therefore a straightforward decision to extend the relationship.

"We believe the driver line-up of Mark and Sebastian is one of the strongest in the sport."</p

Villa agree £12m Downing fee

• Downing had been promised he could move to a big club
• England man likely to be out until October after foot surgery

Aston Villa have agreed a fee of around £12m with Middlesbrough for their winger Stewart Downing. Downing is currently recovering from surgery on a fractured bone in his foot, and is unlikely to be ready for competitive football before October at the earliest, but it appears the Villa manager Martin O’Neill is now keen to complete a deal this summer, rather than waiting until January as had previously been suggested.

Downing, for his part, did not relish the prospect of playing Championship football as he looks to press his claim for a place in Fabio Capello’s England squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup. He had been promised by Middlesbrough’s chairman, Steve Gibson, that he could leave if a big club came in at the right price and the Boro manager Gareth Southgate is resigned to losing the player.

Downing was given clearance to start gym work following a visit to a specialist last week and is due to have a pin inserted in his foot, which he fractured during a game against Aston Villa last season, removed during September. His surgeon is said to be “very pleased” with Downing’s progress and is confident he will make a full recovery.

Martin O’Neill regards Downing as a partial replacement for Gareth Barry, and is also understood to have expressed an interest in Boro’s Tuncay Sanli. Middlesbrough are reportedly demanding a fee of close to £8m for the Turkey international.

Chaotic Newcastle face player exodus

• Mike Ashley believes buyer may want to appoint manager
• Newcastle stars urge owner to drop £100m asking price

Disaffected Newcastle United players are threatening to demand transfers if the owner, Mike Ashley, does not sell the club or appoint Alan Shearer as manager within the next fortnight.

Senior members of the squad are deeply unhappy at being left managerless and in limbo this summer. Amid a growing mood of militancy, they have given Ashley an ultimatum to install Shearer while he waits for a buyer or drop his £100m asking price and sell Newcastle quickly.

It is understood that the defenders Steven Taylor and Habib Beye are leading the calls for Shearer, who was in charge on a temporary basis for the final eight games of last season, to be made manager. If the former England captain does not shortly take charge it is thought they will be joined by Sébastien Bassong, Nicky Butt and Alan Smith in handing in transfer requests.

Considering Shearer has told Ashley that the first four of that quintet are essential if Newcastle are to return to the Premier League, that would represent a major blow. Such a revolt would also be a significant gesture by the players who would lose lucrative loyalty bonuses.

Leading players have begun clamouring for action as Newcastle’s squad prepare for the new season at a “boot camp” just outside Dublin, where they are being trained by the caretaker coach Chris Hughton. Ashley has been reluctant to hire a manager in case the new owners have a preferred candidate. Three consortia are considering buying Newcastle but none appears in any great hurry to finalise a sale.

Bassong may issue his transfer demand as early as Monday. The centre-half proved a rare success last season and is coveted by several clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa. He has one year left on his contract and, well aware Bassong earns just £5,000 a week, Shearer had urged Ashley to award him a new deal.

Beye is admired by Premier League teams including Everton – who are also eyeing Smith – while Taylor is the subject of interest from Fenerbahce. Newcastle are desperate to offload 10 other high-earning players including Obafemi Martins, Fabricio Coloccini and Joey Barton.

Seymour Pierce, the investment bank brokering Newcastle’s sale, is hopeful a deal may be concluded by the end of the week. The club is attracting interest with an Austrian consortium understood to be the latest investment group to have been shown around St James’ Park, when a Malaysian consortium also made a return visit.

In the interim Newcastle are preparing for their first pre-season friendly at Shamrock Rovers on Saturday by following an arduous fitness programme devised by Shearer and featuring thrice daily training sessions – the first at 7am – followed by frequent ice baths.

Newcastle face player exodus

• Senior players could hand in transfer requests
• Beye and Taylor thought to be dismayed by lack of progress

Newcastle United may have to head off a players’ revolt if the saga of the club’s ownership is not resolved soon. It has been reported that several players who hoped to stay on Tyneside to attempt to drag the club back into the Premier League under Alan Shearer’s leadership have grown increasingly frustrated by the delay in naming a new manager.

Matters could come to a head within a fortnight as those who had hoped their futures and that of the club might have been resolved by now could ask for moves unless a permanent manager is put in place.

Shearer held talks with the current owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias within days of the end of the season. The former Newcastle player was thought to be keen to step into full-time management while the club’s hierarchy were apparently delighted with his enthusiasm to do so, meaning the way forward appeared to be mapped out.

But then Ashley decided to cut his losses and put the club up for sale for the second time and, nearly six weeks on, he has not found a buyer.

In the meantime, the players – or at least those not given extra time after appearing for their countries at the end of last season – have returned to training with no manager and an owner keen to move on.

Ashley’s hands are tied to a certain extent by the fact prospective buyers want to appoint their own manager rather than inherit one from their predecessors.

Shearer outlined his plans for the club back in May, including which members of the current squad he would like to keep and which he would move on in an effort to slash a crippling wage bill.

The likes of Steven Taylor, Habib Beye and Damien Duff, among others, have indicated their willingness to stay, while the Frenchman Sébastien Bassong was one man Shearer was desperate to retain.

However, there have been suggestions that both Taylor and Beye have become dismayed at the lack of conspicuous progress, while Bassong’s representatives have already spoken to two other English clubs.

Llambias revealed yesterday that “more than two” potential purchasers have matched Ashley’s £100m asking price and the current regime is hopeful that a deal could be struck within days. But the clock is running with the new Championship campaign due to get under way on 8 August with many of the players as yet unsure as to where they will be playing their football next season.

The bulk of the squad, minus Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Lovenkrands, David Edgar and Ignacio González, who have left the club after their contracts expired, are currently in Ireland, where Newcastle will play Shamrock Rovers in their first warm-up game on Saturday.

But they will return to Tyneside to resume preparations on Monday hoping for positive developments.
