Conspirator: Venue Change Info

UPDATED WEST COAST PERFORMANCES SCHEDULED FOR EARLY FEBRUARY

Conspirator

On the heels of a successful northeast tour that included a sold out show in Syracuse, NY, Conspirator has announced that
five scheduled performances have newly updated venue information, in addition to confirming drummers and
support acts.

Friday 2/5 in Los Angeles has been moved to the House of Blues Sunset Strip. Wednesday 2/9 in Portland has been
moved to the Roseland Theatre. Saturday 2/12 has moved from Oakland to across the bay at The Independent in
San Francisco. Efforts are being made to schedule a performance in Seattle, WA, and the band plans to issue
updates as soon as possible.

Saturday 2/19 in Albany is being rescheduled for a later date. Instead, Conspirator will be returning to The Stone
Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. On Saturday 2/26, instead of Urbana, Conspirator will be playing The Bluebird in
Bloomington, IN.

All of the West Coast shows will feature Lane Shaw on drums, and Break Science featuring Adam Deitch opening. Piper will also be
DJ’ing for both Montana shows.

February 16 through 2h will feature Darren Shearer of The New Deal on drums. February 24
through March 3 will feature Mike Greenfield from Lotus on drums. Darren will again join us for the final two shows in NYC and Stroudsburg on
March 4 and 5.

The New Deal will be co-headlining February 24 in Detroit, and February 25th in Chicago.

Solid-state batteries: The power of the press

A new process will make solid-state rechargeable batteries that should greatly outperform existing ones

ELECTRONICS made a huge leap forward when the delicate and temperamental vacuum tube was replaced by the robust, reliable transistor. That change led to the now ubiquitous silicon chip. As a consequence, electronic devices have become vastly more powerful and, at the same time, have shrunk in both size and cost. Some people believe that a similar change would happen if rechargeable batteries could likewise be made into thin, solid devices. Researchers are working on various ways to do this and now one of these efforts is coming to fruition. That promises smaller, cheaper, more powerful batteries for consumer electronics and, eventually, for electric cars.

The new development is the work of Planar Energy of Orlando, Florida—a company spun out of America’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in 2007. The firm is about to complete a pilot production line that will print lithium-ion batteries onto sheets of metal or plastic, like printing a newspaper. …

Peat bogs and climate change: Wet, wet, wet

Forests are not the only habitat whose conservation matters to the climate

RUSSIA does not normally spring to mind as being in the forefront of the fight against climate change. The citizens of Moscow, however, need no explanation of one aspect of the problem—the importance of wetlands. Earlier this year they had an abrupt and lethal lesson on the dangers of peat-bog fires. An unusually hot summer set such fires across the country and the peatlands around Moscow generated a smog that blanketed the city with carbon monoxide and soot. By August 9th the daily death rate had climbed to 700, twice the normal level for that time of the year.

Whether peat-bog fires are being encouraged by climate change is debatable. But it is clear that they release prodigious quantities of climate-changing carbon dioxide when they happen. And even in the absence of fire, draining peatlands—for example, for agriculture—liberates a lot of carbon dioxide. In Russia such drainage is reckoned to free 160m tonnes of the gas every year. In Indonesia the figure is 508m tonnes. All told, the global total is about 1.3 billion tonnes—6% of man-made carbon-dioxide emissions even without the effect of fire. That is far more than the contribution made by aviation, for example. …
