Slow charging

Here’s a picture from Portugal’s electric mobility initiative – Mobi-E – of one of its slow charging points in the country.

More than 50 are already installed in Portugal but talking to just-auto from Lisbon today (15 November), a Mobi-E spokeswoman said the machines would take up to eight hours to recharge an electric vehicle.

Well, as it says on the tin, it’s a slow charger. Quick chargers – which are in the process of being installed in Portugal will take around 30min – while all new homes in the country will apparently also come equipped with charging points.

Eight hours seems a long time to leave your car in a public place being charged up – will EV owners feel comfortable with that?

And will all charging points come equipped with festive balloons too?

Charging for content: Media’s two tribes

Some media outfits chase scale, while others pursue premium pricing

IS IT better to take a little money from a lot of people, or a lot of money from a few? In Britain the Times and the Sunday Times newspapers are about to take the latter course by asking people to pay for news online. It is a bold move: the Times, which is owned by News Corporation, is a mainstream paper in a fiercely competitive national market. And the paywall it is building is a mighty one that is impervious even to Google’s web crawlers.

Paywalls are rising across the media landscape as many firms conclude that revenue from online advertising alone is not enough to make ends meet. The Tallahassee Democrat, a newspaper owned by Gannett, starts charging from July 1st. Hulu, a free video website that was launched in America in 2008, said this week that it would begin selling subscriptions. …

Charging for newspapers online: Now pay up

Newspapers have plenty of options for charging online, but no sure bets

IF NEWSPAPER bosses keep their promises, the next few months will see a decisive retreat from free news online. This summer senior figures at big media firms such as News Corporation, Axel Springer Verlag and MediaNews Group have all threatened to start charging. Companies representing more than 700 newspapers have expressed interest in the online-payment platforms being developed by Journalism Online, an American start-up.

It will not be easy. For ten years readers have been enjoying free news online, and the BBC, public-radio stations and commercial television-news outfits such as CNN will continue to supply it. A newspaper that tries to charge will jeopardise online advertising, which often accounts for 10-15% of revenues. But if the obstacles are many so are the potential solutions. …
