President holds ‘hawks’ back

ISLAMABAD – Following the waving of olive branch from Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) during its meeting held at Raiwind, Pakistan PeopleÂ’s Party leadership after a brief meeting at Awan-e-Sadr Tuesday night also decided to observe restraint and stay away from indulging in blame-game.
Though there was no official word about the meeting of PPP leaders held at Awan-e-Sadr, the sources in the party disclosed that partyÂ’s Secretary General Jahangir Badr, Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Qaira, MNA Farahnaz Isphahani and some other senior party leaders were called by President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the controversy triggered by some former secret agencies operators implicating the mainstream politicians in dirty power game in the past.
Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar denied occurrence of such meeting but the sources in the party insisted that the senior party leaders were summoned by President Zardari to discuss the controversy.
The sources further said that it was on the directives of the President that Premier Gilani had contacted Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on telephone from Libya and requested him to stop his party men from issuing provocative statements and assured him that PPP leaders would also avoid commenting on these thorny issues of the past.
The sources said that Jahangir Badr and Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Qaira were strongly against indulging in the blame game and said that it would cause irreparable loss to democracy and democratic institutions in the country.
They said that instead of trading harsh statements with PML-N, with which they were also sitting in the coalition government in Punjab, the people behind the whole drama should be exposed.
They further said that the people behind all this could not be democratic or patriotic to the country as the whole exercise was aimed at destabilizing the incumbent political dispensation.
The sources further disclosed that it was decided in the meeting that all the party MPs and office-bearers would be barred from giving statements on the issue and only the party spokespersons and Federal Minister for Information would issue partyÂ’s point of view if and when required on the subject.
APP adds: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday called the Chief Minister Punjab and President PML-N Shahbaz Sharif from Tripoli (Libya) to express his serious concern over the exchange of accusations between some of the leasers of PML (N) and PPP and urged for restraint from giving provocative statements.
He said that democratic forces should not fall prey to the conspiracy of those elements whose even intentions are to derail this system. Welcoming the call from PML (N) Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to stop vilification campaign against each other, he said that we should join hands to foil attempts of destabilisation of political environment for the sake of democracy.
The Chief Minister also apprised the Prime Minister about the current status of availability of sugar and atta. The Prime Minister directed the Chief Minister to make all possible efforts for ensuring the availability of sugar, atta and other essential food items at affordable prices.
The Prime Minister accepted the Chief MinisterÂ’s proposal to hold a meeting of all the Chief Ministers to discus the issues of national importance.

Flood affects thousands in India

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by floods in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, officials say.

More than 100 villages across Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur districts have been flooded by the surging waters of the Bagmati river.

Late on Sunday, a tributary of the river breached mud embankments at two places, causing fresh areas to be inundated with flood waters.

Last year, the Kosi river flooded causing havoc in Bihar.

Nearly 300 people along with many animals were swept away in the deluge and more than three million people were displaced.

Both the Kosi and Bagmati rivers originate in Nepal.

‘Receding’

On Sunday, Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas and held a meeting with the state’s top officials.

"The flood victims would get free food grains, 2,000 rupees ($40) in cash and other relief materials like tarpaulin sheets immediately," Mr Kumar announced later.

The chief minister said the air-dropping of food packets was not necessary any more as the water level was receding.

Officials say two camps have been set up at Sitamarhi to provide shelter to those displaced by the floods.

Flood waters entered Sitamarhi on Saturday when the Bagmati breached a levee at the village of Tilaktajpur.

Officials say a probe has been ordered into the circumstances of how the levee – which was constructed a few months ago – was breached.

"Anyone found guilty will not be spared," the chief minister warned.

Meanwhile, engineers are trying to plug the breach and they say the work will be complete in a day or two.</p

9 killed in Gojra riots

GOJRA (PPI/Reuters/AFP) – At least nine people were killed in armed clash between two groups and police firing on the mob here on Saturday.
An angry mob marched towards a village of rival community in Tehsil Gojra District Toba Tek Singh where fierce clashes erupted between the two groups.
At least nine people including six women belonging to both sides lost their lives in armed clashes and police firing. Many others were injured.
On the orders of President Asif Zardari, the government sent Punjab Rangers to the riot-hit town to maintain law and order.
A heavy contingent of police was also dispatched to the troubled area to bring the situation under control.

According to Reuters and AFP, six Christians, including four women, were burnt alive and dozens were wounded in clashes in the town, officials said, adding 40 houses and a church were also burnt over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in the town, officials said.
Tension has been running high between the two communities in Gojra over allegations that Christians had desecrated the Holy Quran.
Clashes erupted early on Saturday, with an exchange of fire from the members of the two communities.
Television footage showed burning houses and streets strewn with blackened furniture and people firing at each other from their rooftops.
Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti alleged a mob “misled by extremists”, attacked a Christian neighbourhood and torched dozens of houses.
“We have received six bodies of people who died of burn injuries. They included four women, one man and one child,” Abdul Hamid, a Health Ministry official in the town told Reuters by telephone.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, who is also responsible for security matters of Punjab, condemned the attack and said an inquiry had been ordered.
However, he said, a preliminary investigation showed there was no desecration of the Holy Quran. “It was just a rumour which was exploited by anti-state elements to create chaos,” he said.
“I request both Muslim and Christian communities to show restraint,” Sanaullah said, adding the government would take strict action against rioters and also police who failed to stop the violence.
“Some people blamed the Christians for the desecration of the Holy Quran,” Minorities Minister Bhatti said, adding that the accusations were “baseless”.
He did not elaborate on the alleged desecration.
Police said that unrest between a group of Muslim and Christian villagers first flared late last month over a dispute over the Holy Book, which was later resolved.
Tensions erupted Saturday however, when the Christian group were attacked again and their houses set on fire.
“Today, according to our information… this is the same issue of alleged desecration of the Holy Quran,” Inkisar Khan, city police chief told reporters.
“All the dead are Christians. I was told that they were burned alive,” Bhatti said.
Television footage from the area showed police using teargas in an effort to disperse an angry mob.
Online adds: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has called Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif and directed him to take strict action against the persons involved in the Gojra incident.
Spokesman of Prime Minister Secretariat told that Prime Minister Gilani who is currently on Karachi visit telephoned Shahbaz Sharif as soon as he got information about the incident and ordered Chief Minister to take emergency measures to stop gun-battle in Gojra.
At this, Chief Minister assured Prime Minister that he had already issued directives to the concern administration and he was personally monitoring the incident.
Meanwhile, a meeting of renowned and prominent ulema of the country was held under Ittehad Tanzimat Madaris Pakistan in Lahore.
According to a handout issued on Saturday, the meeting was presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which a resolution was passed unanimously condemning violence in Gojra.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of the Punjab government has said that the report submitted to President Zardari with regard to Gojra incident is not based on facts in which the Punjab government has been criticised unnecessarily.
According to a handout, Punjab government spokesman said that unjust allegations have been levelled in the contents of this report. The spokesman further said that in fact the Rangers were called on the request of Home Department of the Punjab government.
