The U.S. House today passed the telework bill, requiring executive agencies to support the option of employees working remotely as much as possible. Chip giant Intel, along with football helmet maker Riddell, is using supercomputers to simulate and eventually reduce the effect of on-field collisions on the brain. – At the SC10
supercomputing conference in New Orleans, Intel announced that its
supercomputers have been able to simulate the way a football player’s
brain responds to collisions.

By replacing RISC systems with Xeon-based Linux servers, GM has more than tripled its computational capability for advanced simulation and design and cut associated electrical consumption and hardware ownership costs by more than 75 percent. GM has used the compute power to reduce its new car design cycle to just 18 months from 48.

Intel has acquired CognoVision Solutions Inc., a privately held software company based in Toronto, Canada. CognoVision processor-intensive video analytics software based computer vision algorithms for digital signs, many of which are increasingly being powered by Intel Core processors. The acquisition is part of Intel’s overall digital signage strategy, which also includes the recently announced Intel, Microsoft and NEC strategic relationship. Intel is not providing more detail at this time.
Smooth-Stone, which is looking to build ARM-designed chips for low-power servers, is changing its name to Calxeda and hiring executives with backgrounds at such places as IBM, HP, Marvell and Polycom. – Smooth-Stone, a startup that is looking to move the ARM
processor designs into the data center, is changing its name and bulking up its
