Stanko Subotić aka Cane accused on Wednesday former Interior Minister Dušan Mihajlović of accepting his money.
Subotić is wanted in Serbia on cigarette smuggling charges, and his representatives held a press conference in Belgrade to say that Mihajlović received a quarter of a million euros in 2003.

Austria’s customs service have detained a foreign diplomat accredited to Serbia and his driver for cigarette smuggling. They are suspected of smuggling more than 25,000 cartons of cigarettes worth about EUR 1mn in the past two years, Austrian media have reported.

Special Prosecutor for Organized Crime Miljko Radisavljević says allegations made by “controversial businessman” Stanko Subotić, aka Cane, will be verified. Subotić, indicted in Serbia for his role in the 1990s cigarette smuggling operations, said in a phone-in a B92 TV live talk show on Monday evening that money that he was owed was used to finance the purchase of the Port of Belgrade company and Belgrade-based daily VeÄernje Novosti.

Former chief of the Montenegrin trade mission in Washington, Ratko Knežević, said that he can prove his allegations regarding cigarette smuggling activities. “My publicly stated claims in the media will once again be confirmed officials, and the material evidence which I have will be submitted,†Knežević said regarding the statements he gave to the media earlier about Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Äukanović’s involvement in cigarette smuggling.
Police to question Knežević regarding smuggling allegations
Montenegrin police inspectors will question former Washington trade mission chief Ratko Knežević about his allegations regarding cigarette smuggling activities. According to daily Dan, Montenegrin police administration Director Veselin Veljović said that Knežević “will have the opportunity to give his statement on his information regarding cigarette smuggling actions in a direct talk with police officials.â€

A Swiss indictment on cigarette smuggling in the Balkans says that money gained in this way financed a well-known Montenegrin sports club.
