London’s The Egg Tour States

SIGNATURE ELECTRONIC DANCE ROCK ATTACK COMES TO U.S.

The Egg

U.K. sensation The Egg have just begun a select tour across the U.S.A. Performing their trademark style of live electronic rock featuring strong funk influences, The Egg has been building a strong international fan base for over 14 years from their London home.

The band is best known on the European festival circuit, but fit just as comfortably in rock venues or dance clubs. “I suppose Glastonbury is our spiritual home,” admits Ned Scott, The Egg’s keyboard player and one of the twins at the heart of The Egg’s creative apparatus. “We grew up there, in a way. We first went when we were four and our parents used to go – they all took their clothes off, and we ran away!” The band includes Ned’s brother Maff Scott on drums, Ben Cullum on bass, and Matt White on guitar (replaced by Drew Thane on guitar for the fall tour).

The Egg will join Lotus on many of their U.S. fall tour dates. They will also be performing headlining shows in Philadelphia and New York City and a main stage appearance at Sonar in Baltimore on Halloween night.

Lotus Pay What You Want Tour

LOTUS ANNOUNCE HUGE FALL TOUR, INCLUDING A “PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT” WESTERN STATE RUN

THE BAND RELEASES A PAIR OF EPs ON OCTOBER 6: FEATHER ON WOOD AND OIL ON GLASS

Lotus

Lotus is about to break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior – they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The “Pay-What-You-Want-Tour” featuring Lotus is an eight-night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band’s two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.

The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus’ larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver’s Fillmore, NYC’s Terminal 5, Baltimore’s Sonar, Chicago’s Vic Theatre, and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science ft Adam Deitch, The Egg (from London, U.K.), Big in Japan, and Big Gigantic. Don’t miss a few special small shows: here’s the scoop – two shows at NYC’s Mercury Lounge are being bundled with the T-5 ticket, and the same offer is available for the Denver shows (to get into Quixote’s, you must buy the Fillmore ticket).

Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the three New York City shows, two Denver shows, both Boston shows and a few other shows to be determined. The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus’ 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn’t find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn’t been finished by deadlines or they weren’t coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding tempos.

Why?: Eskimo Snow

Why? To Release New Album Eskimo Snow

Why?

A year and a half after releasing the acclaimed LP Alopecia, Why? returns with their fourth album, Eskimo Snow (out September 22). The two records are each other’s perfect foil: while last year’s release found Yoni Wolf and the gang delivering a tight set of intricate rhymes, live loops, slurred hooks and acerbic wit, Eskimo Snow offers a sung, sobering take on mortality that unfurls in lush waves of Americana and pop-infused psych-folk. Pre-mixed in Nashville by Lambchop‘s Mark Nevers (Silver Jews, Bonnie Prince Billy, Calexico), this album is Why?’s most live-sounding yet – a shadowy and sprawling piece as intimate in subject matter as it is handsome in timbre.

This record presents a band uninhibited and evermore accomplished at imbuing sound with mood. “On Rose Walk, Insomniac” rolls forth on a tempestuous din, with hard drumming through the chorus, with Yoni’s voice sounding like its running through a Leslie speaker. “Berkeley By Hearseback” comes in so soft, the guitar tones feel like waves of grain next to the splashy cymbals and a cowboy croon ricocheting through the background. “This Blackest Purse” weaves a melancholy that shirks dourness for a curious smile. And when the titular song brings the album to a hushed close, Eskimo Snow‘s place in the narrative becomes clear. Rather than spit at death or threaten it with suicide, Yoni stops bucking against the inevitable. In the process, the band discovers a rich place that the rest of us can happily live within.

Eskimo Snow Track List:

1. These Hands
2. January Twenty Something
3. Against Me
4. Even The Good Wood Gone
5. Into The Shadows of My Embrace
6. One Rose
7. On Rose Walk, Insomniac
8. Berkeley By Hearseback
9. This Blackest Purse
10. Eskimo Snow

Amazon deal to reprint rare books

Amazon.com website

Online retailer Amazon is teaming up with the University of Michigan to provide reprints of 400,000 rare, out-of-print and out-of-copyright books.

The books from the university’s library are in more than 200 languages from Acoli to Zulu and include a 1898 book on nursing by Florence Nightingale.

Amazon’s Book Surge unit will print the books in soft-cover editions at prices from $10(£6) to $45.

It comes as the Ann Arbor college seeks to digitise its book collection.

Financial details of the tie-up arrangement have not been revealed.

‘Rich collections’

The books, such as Nightingale’s "Notes on Nursing: What it is and what it is not", will be printed on demand.

An 1860 first edition of the book, which aims "to give hints for thought to women who have personal charge of the health of others", can currently sell for up to £1,000.

Florence Nightingale's out of print nursing book

"This agreement means that titles that have been generally unavailable for a century or more will be able to go back into print, one copy at a time," said Paul Courant, the university’s librarian.

"The agreement enables us to increase access to public domain books and other publications that have been digitised," Mr Courant said.

"We are very excited to be offering this service as a new way to increase access to the rich collections of the university library."

Some of the reprints being offered for sale are of books that have been scanned by Google, while others were processed by the university itself.

‘Economic’

The University of Michigan-Google partnership started in 2004 as part of a wider programme that also includes Harvard and Stanford universities and the University of California system.

Authors and publishers filed a lawsuit claiming copyright violation, but Google and the publishing industry settled the suit last year.

Amazon’s Book Surge print-on-demand service was launched in 2007 with books from the collections of Emory University, the University of Maine and the Toronto and Cincinnati public libraries.

"Public and university libraries are seeing the benefits of print-on-demand as an economic and environmentally-conscious way to support their missions of preserving and making rare or out-of-copyright material broadly available to the public," said Book Surge’s Amanda Wilson. </p
