Australia regulator clears $10b ASX acquisition by SGX

Singapore Exchange’ (SGXL.SI) US$7.8 billion ($10.1 billion) plan to buy ASX (ASX.AX) cleared a hurdle when the Australian competition regulator (ACCC) cleared it but the deal to create Asia’s fourth biggest bourse by volume still needs to navigate a political minefield.

The ACCC, which last month questioned whether the deal could stall the entry of competing trading platforms into Australia, concluded it would not impede competition.

Regulator clears Singapore’s proposed purchase of ASX

Singapore Exchange’s bid for ASX, operator of the Australia’s main bourse, has been cleared by the nation’s competition regulator.

The deal wouldn’t adversely affect competition in exchange services, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in a statement today. A key focus of its investigation was whether the acquisition of ASX would deter entry into the Australian market of rival Chi-X Australia Pty and other competitors due to SGX’s links with Chi-X Global Inc., it said.

Singapore bourse clears about 90% of global iron ore swap trade

Singapore Exchange, operator of the city’s securities and derivatives markets, represents as much as 90% of global over-the-counter clearing of iron ore swaps, said the chief executive of its commodity unit.

More than 200 counterparties, which are producers, users and traders of the steel-making ingredient, are using the service, Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Ang of the Singapore Commodity Exchange said in an interview today.
