Clearwire Makes New Funding Official

Sprint Nextel invests another $1.176 billion in the WiMax provider. Clearwire also announces $1.45 billion in new senior secured notes with net proceeds to be used to pay off the companys existing $1.40 billion debt.
– Clearwire
made it official Nov. 10, confirming partner Sprint Nextel has invested another
$1 billion in the WiMax provider. In addition, fellow partners Comcast, Time
Warner Cable, Intel, Eagle River Holdings and Bright House Networks are making
additional investments totaling $500 million.


Sprint to Invest Another $1.5B in Clearwire

In addition to Sprint’s new investment in Clearwire’s 4G WiMax technology, Clearwire partners Comcast, Intel, Time Warner and Bright House Networks also combine to invest $500 million.

Clearwire Communications continues it aggressive national WiMax rollout with a Philadelphia debut. The rollout is part of Clearwire’s plan to bring wireless 4G service to 80 markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of 2010.

Despite its struggles, Sprint continues to push wireless 4G WiMax service with official launches in Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth along with three markets in North Carolina. By the end of 2009, Sprint promises WiMax rollouts in Honolulu, Seattle, San Antonio and Austin, Texas.

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies joins Motorola, Samsung, Cisco Systems and DragonWave as equipment providers for Clearwire’s WiMax network.

As 4G wireless broadband provider Clearwire celebrates its latest market rollout in Las Vegas, Samsung says it will introduce the Mondi WiMax tablet for Clearwire customers. Clearwire also announces an Aug. 1 debut for a dual-mode 4G/3G modem for customers who travel outside of the company’s 4G coverage.
