STI gains 0.9% to close at 3,211.12

Singapore’s Straits Times Index gained 0.9% to 3,211.12 at the close, where the market shut for the afternoon for the Lunar New Year. All but four stocks rose in the benchmark index of 30 companies.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.7 times estimated earnings, compared with about 15.6 times at the end of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market. Stock symbols are in parentheses after the company name.

Commodity suppliers: The Thomson Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index, which tracks prices of 19 commodities from copper to corn, increased 0.2% in New York yesterday, extending its advance for a third day.

Singapore hedge fund Artradis to close, founder to start new funds

Atradis Fund Management, once Singapore’s biggest hedge fund manager with about US$4.5 billion ($5.8 billion), plans to wind down its operations and return money to investors after it lost money in the last two years, co-founder Stephen Diggle said on Tuesday.

Diggle, however, plans to remain in the industry by turning his family office into a fund manager. He told Reuters he would set up two new funds and take over two of Artradis’s existing funds.

Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.2% to 3,238.63 at the close. Almost two stocks dropped for each that rose in the benchmark equity index of 30 companies.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 14.8 times estimated earnings, compared with about 15.6 times at the end of 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The following shares were among the most active in the market.

Developers: Singapore real estate companies have started cutting prices and offering discounts on new residential projects after the government stepped up measures to curb property speculation, The Business Times reported, without citing anyone.

French newspapers: Too close to power

A malaise that goes back more than 300 years

FRANCE’S second-largest economic daily, La Tribune, has suspended debt repayments while it seeks new investors. Le Monde, the country’s greatest newspaper, found new investors in June but seems to have lost its way and is looking for a new editorial director. Bakchich, a satirical weekly, said on January 11th that it will close for want of funds.

France’s national newspapers are shrivelling. The eight main national dailies together sell 1.2m copies a day—about the same as Britain’s slumping Daily Mirror. News-stand sales in November were 10% lower than a year earlier. For La Tribune the fall was a disastrous 33%. The overall drop in sales, including postal and delivered subscriptions, was less steep. …

Polls close in Kosovo elections

47.8 percent of voters cast their ballots by the end of voting in the Kosovo elections today, the Kosovo Central Election Commission (CEC) said. CEC’s Valdete Daka said that mobile polling stations were open in northern Kosovo as well, adding that the turnout in these locations was “lower”.

STI falls 2% to close at 3,126.30

Singapore’s Straits Times Index declined 2% to 3,126.30 at the close, the biggest drop since May 25. Twenty-nine stocks fell in the benchmark equity index of 30 companies.

Shares on the measure trade at an average 15.3 times estimated earnings, compared with about 17.4 times at the beginning of the year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Palm-oil producers: Crude palm oil for February delivery dropped as much as 2.5% in Kuala Lumpur today.

Golden Agri-Resources (GGR SP), the world’s second- biggest palm-oil producer, slumped 4.2% to 68.5 cents. Indofood Agri Resources (IFAR SP), the palm-oil unit of Indonesia’s biggest noodle maker, dropped 3.8% to $2.53.

Wilmar International (WIL SP), the world’s biggest palm oil trader, declined 2.1% to $6.02. Deutsche Bank AG lowered its rating to “hold” from “buy”.

Olam International (OLAM SP), one of the world’s three biggest cotton traders, sank 3.1% to $3.10. Cotton declined to a four-week low as China, the world’s biggest consumer, took steps to curb speculative trading and cool its economy, eroding demand from textile producers.

StarHub (STH SP), Singapore’s second-biggest phone company, fell 0.8% to $2.66. Citigroup Inc. lowered its rating on the stock to “sell” from “hold”.

STX Pan Ocean Co. (STX SP), South Korea’s biggest bulk carrier, slipped 1.4% to $13.90 after North Korea fired artillery shells into South Korea, injuring 14 soldiers.
