Global climate: Tough little girl

La Nina proves as disruptive as her better-known brother

EL NINO, a periodic sloshing of warm water from west to east across the Pacific, gets its name—“the boy child”—because it is around Christmas that it warms the water off Peru. It is now understood to have far wider effects, leading to characteristic patterns of temperature, rainfall and drought around much of the world. El Nino’s female counterpart, La Nina—a cooler sloshing from east to west—is less well known, and less frequent. But it too can impose a distinctive pattern of weather worldwide.

A moderately strong La Nina began around the middle of 2010 and is now at its peak; it is very likely to last another couple of months, and conceivably into the middle of this year. It can be blamed for floods in Australia, which are typical of La Nina in their location, if not their intensity, and in the Philippines, where ten people had died as of January 4th. But these are far from the first symptoms. The torrential rains which killed hundreds in Venezuela and Colombia in November and December had the little girl’s fingerprints on them, too. The spectacular inundation in Pakistan last August also fits the pattern. …

Internet governance: Routing it right

The survival of the internet’s governing body has come at a price

PETER DENGATE THRUSH knows a lot about names. A scientist by training, he has much respect for Carl Linnaeus, the 18th-century classifier of plants and animals. But these days Mr Thrush is busy looking after a different taxonomy: internet addresses, or more precisely their suffixes such as “.com” or “.net”. He chairs the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the closest thing the web has to a governing body. New addresses are more than names, he explains, they are creations.

ICANN is set to create many new such digital beasts. When the organisation meets for its triannual shindig between December 5th and 10th in Cartagena, Colombia, its board intends to finalise plans to introduce many more “top-level domains”, as these suffixes are called. This follows the worldwide introduction of internet addresses with non-roman characters earlier this year. If the new plans go ahead, ICANN can argue that it has accomplished its main mission: making the domain-name system (DNS) more competitive and international. For an organisation that seemed doomed from the day it was founded in 1998 because of squabbles over its legitimacy, that is quite a feat. …

Kyuss Reunites Without Josh Homme

THREE QUARTERS OF KYUSS REUNITE

Kyuss

Legendary stoner rock band Kyuss is reuniting without original guitarist and Queens of the Stone Age
main man Josh Homme. The lineup includes vocalist John Garcia, bassist Nick Oliveri,
and drummer Brant Bjork. Guitarist Bruno Fevery will be stepping in to replace Homme, and the
band is calling
themselves Kyuss
Lives
.

In an interview with Blabbermouth, Homme discussed the
possibility of a Kyuss reunion, saying “The offers come in all the
time. They’re getting more and more expensive, and more and more elaborate. The money is crazy, but I’ve never
been tempted – I don’t really care about the money, I never have. That’s not what Kyuss was about, so to punctuate
the end of our sentence with that would be blasphemy…Kyuss has such a great history that it would be a total error.
I like that nobody saw
Kyuss, and that it was largely misunderstood. That sounds like a legend forming to me. I’m too proud of it to rub
my dick on it.”

Another Salma Hayek-Produced Telenovela Headed To ABC

Salma Hayek — the producer behind Ugly Betty’s four season run on ABC — has presented The Alphabet Network with a comedy adaptation of yet another Spanish-language meldrama. Chavez breaks diplomatic ties with Colombia

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has severed diplomatic relations with neighboring Colombia after Bogota accused his country of harboring leftist guerrillas. President Chavez made the announcement on national television Thursday, saying he was forced to sever all relations because Colombia claims he has failed to act against rebels who allegedly have taken shelter in Venezuelan territory. Mr. Chavez said he has ordered Venezuelan military forces to be on “maximum alert” along the border.

Former captive sues Colombia for kidnap

The former Colombian captive Ingrid Betancourt has filed a law suit against Colombia’s government over her kidnapping.
Held hostage by FARC rebels for six years, Betancourt is seeking more than 5 million euros in lost earnings. Appearing in the Colombian capital Bogota last week at a two-year anniversary to mark the rescue, her decision has sparked outrage.

Evil cradlings

Gilad Shalit’s imprisonment compared with other long-held hostages

FOUR years after he was taken hostage, the family of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier being held by Hamas in Gaza, are showing their frustration by staging a sit-in outside the house of Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu. Mr Shalit’s sojourn with his captors has been lengthy but past hostages in the Middle East (and in Colombia) have been held for even longer. As an Israeli solider, Mr Shalit is seen somewhat differently to many long-term hostages. His captors point to the thousands of Palestinians being held in Israeli jails in their defence. Israel has come close to securing his release on a number of occasions as part of a prisoner exchange but thus far without success.

Uprooted

The number of internally displaced people grows

THOSE who have been forcibly uprooted by violence within countries, known in the jargon as “internally displaced people” (or IDPs), are often just as vulnerable as refugees, those who flee persecution by crossing an international border. A new report from the Norwegian Refugee Council notes a steady increase in the global population of IDPs, to 27.1m in 2009. Almost 5m people are displaced in Sudan, more than any other country, although the number of IDPs in Colombia is estimated to be nearly as high. Over 1m are also displaced in Congo, Iraq, Somalia and Pakistan, where recent anti-Taliban assaults by the Pakistani army near the border with Afghanistan have uprooted many civilians. Cyprus, which was split after a Turkish invasion in 1974, has the largest share of its population living elsewhere.

Home-grown terrorism

A Pakistan-born American citizen faces terrorism charges for the bomb in Times Square

FAISAL SHAHZAD faces charges of international terrorism and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, among others, according to America’s attorney-general. The 30-year-old Pakistan-born American citizen attempted to set off a car bomb in New York’s Times Square on Saturday April 30th. Of the 804 people who were prosecuted for terrorism in the eight years following September 11th 2001, a plurality has been American citizens like Mr Shahzad. While many of them have belonged to recognised groups, such as Colombia’s FARC or Lashkar-e-Taiba from Pakistan and Kashmir, a majority claim no affiliation at all.

Third time, unlucky

The courts block Alvaro Uribe from seeking a third term as Colombia’s president

COLOMBIA’S Constitutional Court, by blocking President Alvaro Uribe from seeking the presidency ever again, resolved the two-time leader’s quandary over whether to try to stay in power or leave with his legacy intact. The country had been on tenterhooks for months while it awaited the approaching decision of the court which finally made its ruling late on Friday February 26th.

By a vote of 7 to 2 the court concluded that a referendum that would have sought to allow Mr Uribe to run for a third term in elections in May was unconstitutional. The court ruled that the measure was fraught with irregularities and “substantial violations to democratic principles.” With the court resolving what Mr Uribe had called his “dilemma of the soul” over whether to run again, the popular president said after the ruling that he would work for Colombia “from any trench” for the rest of his life. …
