Lucero: 1372 Overton Park

LUCERO’S 1372 OVERTON PARK
OUT OCTOBER 6

BAND’S FIRST MAJOR LABEL RECORD LOOKS TO MEMPHIS SOUL INFLUENCES

Lucero

Playing between 150-200 live shows a year, Lucero has come to be known as much for their hard-touring work ethic as for their critically acclaimed records. After releasing five studio albums Lucero has managed to land a major label contract with Universal/Republic Records. The band’s new album, 1372 Overton Park, due out October 6, was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and features horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power). The record marks a decided turn toward the Memphis soul sound that has long influenced the band’s sound from afar.

The new album’s name comes from the address of the Memphis loft in which all four band members lived, practiced and even recorded portions of their 2003 release That Much Further West. Over recent years band members have gradually moved out leaving lead singer and guitarist Ben Nichols the sole resident of the space until word finally came down that the building would be sold and demolished. Almost as if marking the end of an era not only for the building but for the band as well, this record turns the page and signals a strong move toward the Memphis soul sound that has long served as an influence for the group.

While 1372 Overton Park serves as a love letter to Memphis and its musical heritage, the band has far from abandoned the country/rock/punk influences that they’ve become known for over their previous five records and countless tour stops. “I think the fact that we don’t claim a genre is very important to what Lucero is,” Nichols said. “There are too many rules in punk rock. Too many rules in country music. We’re hard headed and… god damn if we don’t do things the way we want to do them.”

Lucero is currently streaming “The Devil and Maggie Chascarillo” off the forthcoming album at their website here: luceromusic.com.

The New Up: Summer Tour

REST OF COUNTRY GETS CHANCE TO ENJOY SAN FRAN TREAT

The New Up by Josh Miller

Wrapped in effusive female fronted melodies, darkened by whirling guitars while juxtaposing hard-hitting 00s alternative with psychedelic overtones, The New Up announces summer tour dates in August and September, including Austin, Houston, Cleveland and Portland, in support of the August 18th release of the Better Off EP.

Having played with such artists as The Burning Brides, Jon Langford and Mike Watt, the first EP of the series, Broken Machine, received national recognition where it charted on the CMJ Top 200. Music critic Dennis Cook (Pitchfork, Signal to Noise, JamBase) deemed them “a post-Radiohead group, full of mutated pop hooks, absinthe guitars, smartly wrangled chaos and undisguised beauty and feeling. But, there’s little in the way of influences, even Radiohead’s, that you can pin down exactly… What they’ve made is their own.”

Backed by sincere musicianship inspired by Chicago roots and San Francisco surroundings, The New Up’s influential evasiveness illustrates a dichotomy of urban darkness and Midwestern sincerity, highlighting their equal fascination with nature and urban chaos. Headquartered at their San Francisco home, endearingly named The Pleasure Pad (where the band rehearses and records), members ES Pitcher (vocals, guitar), Noah Reid (guitar, vocals), Hawk West (flute and automation), Dain Dizazzo (bass) and Drew Bertrand (drums) began recording a series of three EPs in the spring of 2008. After lying down the basic tracks at Hyde Street Studios with Jaimeson Durr (Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Handsome Boy Modeling School), they began layering additional tracks at The Pleasure Pad, where they could explore by recording flute lines in bathrooms and trying odd mic placements in closets – without the pressure and financial constraints of a traditional studio.

Lou Barlow: Album & Tour

Lou Barlow Readies His Solo Release And Preps For Tour

Lou Barlow

On October 6, Merge Records will release Lou Barlow‘s new album, Goodnight Unknown. In the four years since his career-redefining, mostly acoustic record Emoh, Lou Barlow has reunited with Dinosaur Jr. and reissued three of Sebadoh‘s classic albums. But as the brilliant new Goodnight Unknown illustrates, he’s hardly living in the past. Borrowing the live-band energy of Dinosaur Jr. and the stylistic reach of Sebadoh, Barlow has built on Emoh‘s full production and written a set of immediate, melodic pop songs that Lou describes as, “a cross between my later work with Folk Implosion and my earlier work with Sebadoh… to my ears, anyway.”

From the surging opening track “Sharing” to the surprisingly soulful performances on “The Right,” Goodnight Unknown benefits from Barlow’s tunefulness and his decision to record the record relatively quickly, with old friends and new. The MelvinsDale Crover adds inspired drum work throughout, and Goodnight Unknown‘s urgent sound owes just as much to frequent Barlow collaborator Imaad Wasif (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alaska!). The record’s considerable power also stems from the new talents on board, including producer Andrew Murdock and Lisa Germano.

Lou Barlow + The Missingmen will be on tour throughout the fall opening for Dinosaur Jr. The Missingmen are guitarist Tom Watson and drummer Raul Morales. Lou “stole” them from Mike Watt for this tour, and is excited to be bringing you the full band experience of Goodnight Unknown.
