Olam, Noble drop as commodity prices tumble

Shares of Olam International dropped as commodity prices tumbled on concern that rising job losses in the US and mounting debt in Europe will slow economic growth and curb deman for raw materials, reported Bloomberg.
 
Olam, a supplier of agricultural commodities, dropped 4.2% to $2.27. Noble Group, a Hong Kong-based commodities supplier, declined 4.5% to $2.79.
 
The Reuters-Jefferies CRB Index of 19 raw materials including corn and copper fell 2.6% in New York yesterday, the biggest drop since Aug 14.

Wilmar, Noble top commodity picks for Nomura

Singapore’s agricultural commodity plays have enjoyed a stellar run this year but investors may need to be more choosy next year, says Nomura.

“We may not see a repeat of the all-inclusive outperformance over the next year, and hence would advise investors to be stock specific in their approach,” says Nomura.

The brokerage says Wilmar International looks like a good bet for its franchise model, leadership in existing businesses and strong earnings support.

CWT surges 58% in 1H earnings to $17.9m

CWT, one of the leading logistics players in Asia, says it posted a 58% jump in net profit attributable to shareholders to $17.9 million for the six months ended June 30, 2009 (1HFY2009).

Revenue remained stable at $300 million, while earnings surged 58% to $17.9 million, mainly driven by higher contribution from the warehousing segment and the soft commodity logistics business in Europe. The soft commodity logistics business was acquired in late 2008 and mainly involves cocoa, coffee and groundnuts.
