Tablet computers: Chasing King Apple
BlackBerry’s creator joins a growing list of pretenders to tablet-computing’s throne
THE early days of personal computing were marked by a spectacular free-for-all as companies big and small fell over one another in a mad rush to become the dominant player in a brand-new business. Now history is repeating itself as one technology firm after another piles into the fledgling market for touch-screen “tablet” computers, which are set to disrupt the computing industry. On September 27th Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian firm that makes the BlackBerry smartphone, became the latest to announce plans for a tablet when it unveiled its PlayBook, which will go on sale in early 2011.
RIM joins a long line of businesses, including Dell, Samsung and Hewlett-Packard (HP), which have set their sights on winning a chunk of what promises to be a whopping market. Todd Bradley, a senior executive at HP, predicted this week that annual sales of tablet computers could hit $40 billion within a few years. Innovation@Intel: 48-Core Single-Chip Cloud Computer – Reading Brain Waves with Computers
Imagine future laptops capable of vision comparable to the human eye, accurately seeing objects and motion. You could shop online using the laptop’s 3D camera and display and see a “mirror image” of yourself wearing the clothes you are “trying on,” seeing how the fabric drapes when you move or twirl and how the color complements your skin tone. Researchers from Intel Labs recently demonstrated (PDF 652KB) a experimental 48-core Intel microprocessor that could make this and much more a reality. Some researchers believe future computers with processors derived from this chip may even be able to read brain waves – where simply thinking about a command could make it happen. The long-term goal of the 48-core microprocessor is to add scaling features to computers in order to spur entirely new software applications and human-machine interfaces. Intel presented a paper on this technology at this week’s 2010 Symposia on VLSI Technology and Circuits. Read more about the “Single-Chip Cloud Computer” (PDF 1.15MB) in Microprocessor Report and see more about how Intel innovation is changing the way we work, live, and play.

INSIDE MOBILE: Planes, Trains, Automobiles: Why Computers Should Be In Control
All planes, trains and automobiles should have substantially more technology than they do today. Plus, they should all be allowed to be taken over by a remote, approved agency in case of problems that would negatively affect the ability of the vehicle to reach its destination safely. Here, Knowledge Center mobile and wireless analyst J. Gerry Purdy explains why we should use networking of vehicles, remote robotics and device intelligence to prevent problems that would endanger passenger lives.
