Hug Your Farmer Benefit Concert With Page, Fishman & All-Star Jam

GOOD MUSIC FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Page McConnell by Rod Snyder

On January 12th, a devastating fire claimed Pete Johnson’s barn, winter storage crops and processing facility. I n an effort to assist the farm’s rebuilding and recovery, the best of Vermont’s local music scene will come together for an all-star jam session that includes Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski (Trey Anastasio Band), Bob Wagner, Clint Bierman and Peter Day (The Grift), Rich Price (The Sweet Remains), Jer Coons, Joshua Panda, Mike Clifford and Matt Hagen (Lendway), Will Evans (Barefoot Truth) and very special guests Jon Fishman and Page McConnell of Phish. One hundred percent of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to support this pillar of Vermont’s local food movement.

Amy Skelton of Pete’s Greens says, “The community response to the fire at the farm in support of Pete’s Greens and local food has been amazing. When spring crops emerge from the ground, we will need a place to wash and store them! This musical extravaganza will contribute a significant building block to the rebuild.”

Live music: Pricing the piper

An economics lesson for the concert business

ARE you longing to see Take That, a British boy band approaching middle age? More than 1.3m people are. So heavy is demand for the tour, which begins in Sunderland in May, that Britain’s phone network at one point creaked under three to four times the normal weight of calls. But even sold-out concerts are never really so. Plenty of Take That tickets are for sale online—at up to five times the original prices.

For the hottest acts, the concert business is good. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber have little problem selling tickets. Yet trouble lurks below the stratosphere. Pollstar, a research firm, estimates that the 50 biggest worldwide tours grossed $2.93 billion last year—12% less than in 2009. StubHub, a large website on which tickets are traded, says the average concert-ticket price dropped by 18% between 2008 and 2010. …

PBS to Air Albert King/Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session Concert

CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS FOR MORE INFORMATION

In Session

PBS has announced that the Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan — In Session program will air as
a special on its stations throughout the month of December (check local listings). Grammy Award winning bluesman
Robert Cray will serve as special
fundraising host on the public television broadcasts.

In 1983, when legendary blues guitarist Albert King, then age 60, was joined by his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan, then age 29,
on a Canadian sound stage for the live music TV series In Session, magic took place.
Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session is not simply a television program: it’s a summit of two master
musicians. The only known recording of King and Vaughan performing together, this is the concert that blues fans
in general, and Stevie Ray Vaughan fans in particular, have been waiting for.

An hour and 45 minutes, approximately, was taped of the two. What will thrill viewers who are fans of the blues,
players of the blues, and who adore SRV, is that the televised concert includes at least one SRV tune — “Texas Flood”
— that was not included on either of the two CD releases of the session.

The PBS special Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan — In Session contains the following songs: “Born Under
a Bad Sign,” “Call It Stormy Monday,” “Texas Flood,” “Pride and Joy,” “Match Box Blues,” and “Don’t Lie to Me.”
