Two more men have been arrested in the U.S. in connection with an alleged plot to bomb New York City last year. The two, named as Adis Medunjanin and Zasrein Ahmedzay, were detained as part of an “ongoing investigation”, an FBI spokesman told reporters.

REVIEW: Novatel MiFi 2200 Makes Effective Mobile Internet Connection
The Novatel MiFi 2200 is a small device that provides 3G Internet access and Wi-Fi connectivity for as many as five wireless users. eWEEK Labs’ tests show that the device is an attractive option for providing mobile Internet access for temporary offices, traveling work teams, meetings and many other situations where an Internet connection could be hard to come by. During tests, the broadband connection was about what you would expect, but Wi-Fi and battery performance were surprising.
– Personal mobile broadband connections have become ubiquitous in recent years. Everywhere you look, you can find someone accessing the Internet using a USB dongle, a 3G connection built into a laptop or netbook, or even a laptop tethered to a smartphone.
All of these solutions work fairly well fairl…
LABS GALLERY: Novatel MiFi 2200 Mobile Wi-Fi Hot Spot Provides Powerful Wi-Fi Connection
Access to mobile 3G broadband connections has become more common in recent years, whether through 3G USB dongles or by tethering to smartphones. But options for mobile offices and traveling work teams have been limited. The Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200, available for both Verizon and Sprint networks, offers a simple-to-manage portable Wi-Fi hot spot that provides acceptable 3G broadband connectivity and a surprisingly powerful Wi-Fi connection for such a small device.

What is the US-Dutch arms connection?
ISLAMABAD – City police on Tuesday held two diplomats of NetherlandsÂ’ Embassy and recovered unlicensed arms and ammunition from their vehicle.
The diplomats were later released, besides their weapons, on the intervention of top diplomatic officials from Netherlands and the US Embassy, sources told The Nation.
According to details, Police officials deputed at Police picket near Secretariat Chowk intercepted a Dark Blue BMW (4191) at 11.30 am. The car did not have diplomatic number plates.
On search, police recovered sophisticated weapons including four hand grenades including two smoke equipments and two flash bombs, two handguns, four magazines and six bullet-proof vests from their vehicle.
This arms and ammunition reportedly belonged to the US embassy and was being transported to the US Embassy by the Dutch, the sources said.
The detained diplomats could not provide any justification and relevant documents for keeping such sophisticated weapons to the police, the sources added.
“They had only a letter issued by the Dutch Embassy on which Ministry of Interior was requested to issue licence,” the sources said.
Police sources told the TheNation, “There was another vehicle bearing registration (IDL-266) which was allegedly backing up the Dutch diplomats BMW.”
“When we intercepted the Dutch vehicle the driver of a car behind them, identified himself as US Embassy employee named Sunny Christopher, having US Embassy’s official card (16570),” the sources said.
Christopher interfered in the police matter, but after an exchange of harsh words the police sent him on his way. But before he left he had harassed the police to the extent that they were forced to make a misstatement in the report to the effect that he came after the release of the two Dutch men. The fact, as this scribe witnessed himself, later corroborated by the SHO, was that Christopher was present throughout the process of search and arrest.
Secretariat police also mentioned intervention by Christopher in the report of the case. The report said the person who identified himself as US Embassy official namely Sunny Christopher interfered in police matter. (See copy of report)
After the intervention of top diplomatic officials including those from the US, the arrested diplomats were allowed to leave with their belongings under cover of diplomatic immunity.
The arrested Dutch were identified as Tom Smith and Williem Uen.
When contacted, Spokesman of American Embassy, Rick Snelsire, he said, “Honestly saying I heard today’s incident but I have no more information regarding the alleged involvement of US Embassy.”
When asked, who is Sunny Christopher? He said, “I don’t know about Sunny.” When this correspondent told him about Sunny’s Embassy card number (16570), he said, “There are hundreds of US embassy employees and it would be difficult for me to identify them all by the card number,” he added.
Given the tension over Dyncorp and Inter-Risk and un-licensed arms being exchanged between Pakistani Security companies and US embassy, some serious questions arise from this latest incident: One, Why were Dutch diplomats carrying unlicensed arms for the US embassy? Two, why was a Pakistani employee of US embassy escorting these diplomats from behind?
Three, why were the Dutch diplomats not in a car with a diplomatic number plate?
Four, were these two gentlemen really Dutch diplomats to begin with?
REVIEW: Windows 7 DirectAccess Replaces VPN with Secure, Always-On Connection
Windows 7 DirectAccess is being billed by Microsoft as the great extender –a next-generation access technology designed to connect remote clients in the age of the vanishing network perimeter. One of the primary deliverables borne of Microsofts “better together” development strategy–which leverages the simultaneous release of the new Windows 7 client OS and the new Windows 2008 Server R2 server OS–DirectAccess worked well in eWEEK Labs’ tests. However, system and security requirements may make DirectAccess just a pipe dream for many organizations right now.

Polanski arrested in connection with sex charge
Filmmaker Roman Polanski has been arrested on an arrest warrant stemming from a decades-old sex charge, Swiss police said Sunday. The Academy Award-winning director pleaded guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl, but fled the United States before he could be sentenced. U.S. authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in 1978.
Creativity through collaboration
“Once you get a new employee an iPhone, they are in,†says Aedas Sport’s Michael Sedlacek. “They’re connected.†And that connection has spiked productivity — by as much as 400%, the architectural firm estimates. “We couldn’t imagine letting people work without one,†adds managing director Dan Meis. “Because that would mean they weren’t connected to us. And ultimately, that would cost the business money, far more than the cost of a phone.â€
ISP pulls plug on illegal filesharers
Hull’s only internet service provider to cut connections of people caught downloading music illegally
Internet users in Hull risk having their connection cut if they illegally share files, under a controversial “three strikes and out policy” operated by the only internet service provider in the area.
Karoo, the north-eastern city’s only ISP, serving 90,000 customers, has in recent years, with little national publicity, been cutting users’ internet connection immediately and without warning if they were found to be in breach of copyright.
It was forced to relax its stance after growing criticism from digital rights groups and customers.
Karoo will now provide customers with three written warnings before temporarily suspending the internet connections of illegal filesharers, after the company admitted it was “exceeding the expectations of copyright owners” .
The policy remains controversial and significantly harsher than other UK ISP providers, which have been reluctant to crack down on illegal filesharers and only recently agreed to send warning letters to persistent filesharers.
The recent Digital Britain report suggested other actions against illegal filesharers, such as having their internet connection slowed, but stopped a long way short of threatening to disconnect online illegal filesharers.
Yesterday the company said it had always taken a firm line on the “alleged abuse” of its internet connections and had a duty to act if it was informed by record labels, or the police about infringing copyright.
Nick Thompson, director of consumer and publishing services at Karoo, said it would in future issue three written warning before cutting its customers internet connection. “It is evident that we have been exceeding the expectations of copyright owners, the media and internet users,” he said. “So, we have changed our policy to move in more line with the industry standard approach, whilst still taking the issues of copyright infringement and illegal internet activity seriously.”
Previously, for a number of years customers were sent a letter requiring them to accept culpability and to promise not to share files again. The first reconnection was free, but if users continued to fileshare they had to pay £30 for each subsequent reinstallation.
Karoo’s policy caused uproar among its clients, who complained that they could not vote with their feet by choosing another internet service provider.
Steve Thornhill, from west Hull, said he had been wrongfully cut off for “illegally downloading” because his computer had been infected by a virus.
“I am absolutely furious about this … There is no warning, they just sever your connection, which is unacceptable in my view,” he wrote on the This is Hull and East Riding website.
Other comments suggest that cutting people’s internet connections may not prevent more tech-savvy users from illegally downloading. One anonymous user wrote: “I got cut off last year twice or downloading films, games and music through bit-torrents, what did I do? Switched to rapidshare! Come on kar-roo, try harder, I like a challenge.”
Digital rights campaign organisation, The Open Rights Group, criticised the company’s decision to continue disconnecting its customers.
Executive director Jim Killock said: “Karoo’s policy still has major concerns around presuming guilt, allowing innocent people to clear their name, and allowing due process to take place. They are still threatening to cut users from the internet without testing the evidence. This is especially concerning given their monopoly position.”
He added: “Even prisoners get to use the internet. For many people, web access is not optional in the modern world.”
Broadband ahoy

The first of three undersea cables bringing high-speed internet to eastern Africa goes live on Thursday. The BBC’s Anne Waithera, in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, finds a nation impatient to join the broadband revolution.
In a busy cyber cafe in Nairobi dozens of people, mostly young, are hunched over computers surfing the net.
I try to strike up a conversation with one of them but he will not even look my way. Without looking up from the monitor he signals with his hand that I should wait until he is done.
"You’ll see a lot of YouTube and Facebook stuff now made for Africa by Africans"
Idd Salim
Symbiotic Media Consortium
This is perfectly understandable. It costs slightly less than $1 to surf for about an hour in a cyber-cafe in Nairobi and internet connection speeds are very slow.
But he is ready to talk after he pays his bill.
"It’s not good. It’s hanging and keeps wasting time and frustrating me," he says.
Another frustrated user complains: "I’ve spent more than 15 minutes instead of 10."
But things are about to change for these internet users.
The Seacom undersea fibre-optic cable goes live on Thursday, promising changes that will be felt right across eastern and southern Africa.
See map of Africa’s new fibre-optic cablesThe switch will take place simultaneously in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Maputo in Mozambique and Mtunzini in South Africa.
The switchover from relying mainly on satellites to the submarine cable is expected to massively increase connection speeds.

One of the biggest setbacks of satellite connections is that a change in weather almost always leads to unstable connectivity.
It is hoped that cyber-cafe owners will transfer the benefits to their customers, as they will be making a huge savings on international links.
"When the fibre-optic cable goes live this means the speeds will be fantastic, we’ll have a higher turnover of clients and that translates to increased income," says Fred, a cyber-cafe manager.
These benefits will also be felt by millions of phone users, who will enjoy cheaper international connections and quicker voice transfers.
"The fibre-optic connection enables faster voice transfer unlike satellite, which has an average response time of 650 milliseconds, thus introducing some delays in our voice communication," says Mahmoud Noor, Seacom’s cable-station manager in Mombasa.
Mr Noor says the new service will reduce this to an average of 90 milliseconds for calls between Europe and eastern Africa, and an even faster response of less than six milliseconds between Dar es Salaam and Mombasa.
Potential squandered
In Kenya, various sectors of the economy are expecting a major boost following the launch of the undersea cable, and investors are anxious about it.
.jpg)
"At the Nairobi stock exchange there is a possibility that things like day-trading will be introduced, where you make an order and in two minutes you will know if it has been sold or not," says Idd Salim of the Symbiotic Media Consortium, a software firm in Nairobi.
"That is not possible right now because you have to make an order today then wait for two or three days for it to clear."
Mr Salim says that Africa’s potential is being hindered by the absence of fast internet connectivity and this technological advance will open new avenues.
"For instance computer programmers cannot start a video service or a powerful website because the connection is slow," he says.
"You’ll see a lot of YouTube and Facebook stuff now made for Africa by Africans.
"Look at things like medicine – people will be able to be diagnosed from their homes because now we can have virtual hospitals."
The use of the undersea cable is expected to be immediate, save for some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) who may want to test it within their networks for a few days first.
Last month the Teams fibre-optic cable was launched in the coastal city of Mombasa, but it has yet to go live.

How to Avoid the Disconnection Epidemic

Reflection on disconnection
In 2009 we are indeed a global community infected by disconnection. On many levels and in many ways. And as a planet and as a tribe living on that planet, it’s safe to say that the Disconnection Epidemic is killing us. Or perhaps should I say, we’re killing us. Metaphorically and literally. Just take a look around at the consequences of our global disconnected-ness. You and I live in a time when mankind is hemorrhaging on many levels; physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and environmentally, and yet despite our condition, we seem to be resistant to learning. We have managed to both progress and regress at the same time. Quite the achievement. It seems that the more educated, informed and equipped we become (as a population), the more selfish, short-sighted, illogical and destructive we become also. For a species which regards itself as the intellectual superior to all others, we have an amazing knack for stupidity and irrational behaviour. I don’t know of any other species that has the ability to wreak havoc on it’s own kind like we Homo Sapiens do. Modern Man; what an ironic term. If only the dolphins were running the show. Not only are we seeing disconnection between individuals in homes, schools and workplaces but also on a much larger scale, between cultures, countries, religions, generations, governments, political groups and so on. And no, I’m not talking about normal healthy ideological, philosophical, theological and political differences here, I’m talking about large-scale attitudes, choices and behaviours that continue to create division, devastation, destruction and mass disconnection.
When I’m the boss of the world, I’ll address it.
Until then…
That may take a while, so in the mean time… what can you and I do to create a greater level of connection with the inhabitants of our own little cosmos? Of course we probably won’t create a global shift or be the genesis for some kind of cosmic awakening in the next week or two (although… ), but in the interim there’s a bunch of stuff you and I can do to create a much greater level of connection, understanding and harmony with those lucky enough to be in our own personal orbit.
Talking with, not at
While there are many variables that will impact on and affect the kind of connection we do or don’t create with the people in our own atmosphere, there is no more important “connection tool†than that of effective communication. And as obvious and fundamental as this sounds, it is often our inability to communicate effectively with those in our world (family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and even strangers) which lies at the core of the disconnected reality that so many of us inhabit. Effective communication happens when we have a genuine desire to connect with people in a meaningful and productive manner. For too many of us, talking regularly equates to neither communication nor connection. Some people want to create a deeper level of communication, understanding and connection, while others simply want to talk at people and massage their ego. Ever seen what happens in parliament? Gold. Talking at people will create disconnection while talking with people will create connection – or at the very least, open the door on a healthier and more productive relationship. One is all about being heard and imposing one’s thoughts, ideas, beliefs and will, while the other is all about listening, understanding, empathising and of course, creating connection.
Here are some no-brainer “connectorsâ€â€¦
- Work to build trust and respect. If there’s no trust or respect there can be no real connection. What often appears to be connection is in fact acting and/or manipulation on one person’s part. Simulated rapport I call it. We learn this kind of stuff in basic retail sales training. It’s not connection; it’s role-playing.
- Ask the right kind of questions. Ask questions that will generate meaningful dialogue; open-ended questions, not yes-no questions. Ask questions which demonstrate that you’re interested in what the other person has to say.
- Work to increase your awareness and to become an active listener. If you are serious about creating connection with someone then give them one hundred percent of your attention in that moment. Yep; all of it. Don’t be anywhere else (mentally). This is not always easy for us as our cerebral landscape tends be a very busy “placeâ€. However, it is a very valuable skill to develop. Do your best to understand the other person’s perspective and thoughtfully consider the intended meaning of their words. Don’t be like many who simply wait for a gap in proceedings to launch their own self-indulgent monologue. As a general rule, listen more than you speak.
- Read the non-verbal communication. In any conversation, the words are only part of the message and sometimes, a small part. What people don’t say will often tell you more than what they do. Listen with your eyes as well as your ears.
- Speak their language. All the talking in the world will result in zero connection if you’re both speaking different languages. And we see this all the time; the boss and the employee, the mother and daughter, the teacher and the student, the tech-dude (Johnny) and the non-tech-dude (me). Lots of words but no understanding, no connection and no positive outcome. While most of us understand English, we all speak our own “languageâ€. What will motivate one person will intimidate another. What will make me laugh will offend my neighbour. What will make complete sense to you could be totally confusing to your parents (think computer). Know who you’re talking with and learn their language if it’s connection you’re after.
Acknowledge their feelings. You don’t need to agree with people to understand them, to respect their point of view or to create genuine connection. Having the same philosophy on everything is not a pre-requisite for connection; if it was, we’d all be in a bunch of trouble.
The Last Bit
The disconnection chat, is indeed a much bigger one than the mere morsel I’ve given you to chew on today. It is something that impacts on virtually every area of the human experience (great and small), and something that I believe needs to be addressed in a practical, humble and honest fashion if we are serious about undoing some of the damage we’re living in today. One individual can’t save six billion, neither can she change the mind of the global power brokers or single handedly steer the S.S.Humanity. However, when enough individuals get together, the few become many and we begin to see a shift in power and a practical, positive consequence in our physical world. That is, real change. So if you’ve been impacted by disconnection on any level (and welcome to the club), my suggestion for you is, rather than allowing yourself to be a victim of disconnection (yep, it’s a choice), work to become a connector. Genuine transformation and connection works from the inside-out and today (like every day) is an opportunity for you to become part of the solution, rather than a perpetuator of the problem.
Every day I choose to create connection and to be part of the solution because I have that choice and that power. I encourage you to join me.
As always, love your thoughts.

US fugitive is arrested in Israel

A US fugitive has been arrested by Israeli immigration police after an international manhunt.
Alleged white supremacist Micky Louis Mayon, who was featured on the US TV programme America’s Most Wanted, was seized in a police raid in Tel Aviv.
He is wanted in connection with firearms-related offences in Steelton, Pennsylvania, dating back to 2007.
Israeli officials say they are now preparing to deport Mayon back to the United States.
The US marshals, who are responsible for catching fugitives who have fled abroad, said that after Mayon vanished in 2007, wanted posters had been issued worldwide via Interpol.
"The search for Mayon came to a successful conclusion… with the actions in Israel," said Marshal Michael R Regan in a statement.
"Locating and identifying Mayon in a foreign country sends a strong message that you can run, but you cannot hide. Even though Mayon had fled the country, US marshals and the Steelton police department did not stop in their pursuit of justice."
The statement said that Mayon was wanted in connection with a violent incident in Steelton in April 2007 after which he was charged with reckless endangerment and firearms-related offences.
Apartment raided
A spokeswoman for Israel’s interior ministry said immigration police raided Mayon’s apartment in south Tel Aviv following a tip-off from Interpol on Monday.
Sabine Haddad said he had arrived in Israel as a tourist in January 2008. He was issued with a one-month visa but stayed on illegally.
"US marshals are on the way here to escort him back to the United States," she said.
"He said… that he did not hold a job while in Israel but made some money by washing dishes and that his parents sent him money to make ends meet."
The website for America’s Most Wanted describes Mayon as a white power activist who attended rallies of the Aryan Brotherhood. It warns that he is dangerous and should not be approached.
It said that the incident in Steelton had involved a number of black men who Mayon claimed had been flirting with white women in a bar.
The website says Mayon is also suspected of setting fire to a judge’s car in Steelton.</p
